Well in New Zealand the Sisters of Battle have come up for pre-release.
$115 for a box of 10 figures, plus the Cherub.
I realise the contents can be built a number of different ways – one squad of 10 Battle Sisters, or a squad each of 5 Celestians and 5 Dominions – with quite a few weapon options., but still.
The T’au Fire Warriors/Breacher combo box is the closest comparison I can think of and it is $100.
In NZ the Start Collecting boxes are either $165, $180 or $195.
Using the buy foreign cash exchange rate of 0.4975, that equates to 57.21 pounds.
Perhaps I should wait for the Start Collecting box.
January 11, 2020 at 1:45 am #1469899I wouldn’t wait for a start collecting box at those prices, I’d be looking for another (cheaper) game entirely. It’s probably going to retail at about £30 in the UK if it’s the same price as the Tau Firewarriors. Time to ditch GW and get some historicals in (at least you’re not paying the additional sci-fi/fantasy “tax” that inflates the price anyway), perhaps some of the nice Victrix plastics we’ve seen in bags of 60 along with a copy of Clash of Spears (when it comes out). At those prices I wonder even DARE to try and sneak the minis in past the other half (I’d get lynched)…….
January 11, 2020 at 2:44 am #1469901Don’t have an other half, so that isn’t an issue.
From what you posted, I’d guess they will be 35 quid for the box.
I just want enough for a Kill Team roster – haven’t pointed it up yet – and a bit of retail therapy.
Might just stick with the codex, at least there wasn’t a price bump there.
January 11, 2020 at 3:44 am #1469905You don’t have to us GW models, stop playing their game…. start playing your game.
This game use to be a hobby, not just a war game. Hobby isn’t just another word, it’s the entire point.
What I mean by this, is use other companies. Buy non GW models, kitbash them so they are thematically close to the models you can’t afford. Embrace the old school practice of making your army, your own.
Not being able to afford GW is a legitimate reason to not buy GW. Truly it is. So don’t bother losing sleep over something that is out of your hands, when life gives you lemons you just gotta accept things and make the best damn lemonade you can.
I would look at other companies like Raging Heroes.
January 11, 2020 at 6:33 am #1469907If I want to play at a GW store I have to use their models…and strangely enough my home town of Dunedin is the only place in the South Island of New Zealand to have one – a Warhammer store one person setup.
We only have a population of 130K, only roughly a third of the SI biggest city has. <Shrug>.
January 11, 2020 at 9:01 am #1469929It’s a shame the game and models are even more expensive in New Zealand and Australia. It makes it an even pricier hobby. Must be super conflicting to people who love it
January 11, 2020 at 10:04 am #1469936Yeah @mage. Back in the day of third edition all of the codices were softback and went for around $30 to $40, from memory.
I used to buy them all as they were my introduction to the universe and there went as many coming out in a year, it was so cheap.
I think GW has really upped the velocity of release, in the first 2 weeks of January there are 2 AoS army books and 1 40K codex…
I don’t even spend as much as the BoS box price on groceries in a week.
January 11, 2020 at 3:44 pm #1469992The GW store policy, while understandable, can be a complete pain in the ass.
However, honestly it doesn’t change anything. I mean if you can’t afford to play with there models, and now there store rules… does that really change the outcome.
Your choices are limited, because GW prices are only going to continue to rise. So, you need to increase money or make hobby changes. Hobby choices are usually simpler. But both work. And both are far far more likely to happen then the GW hobby community ever change their spending habits, or holding GW accountable for their crap.
Maybe a new venture into starting or finding clubs. GW store rules aren’t important if you don’t play there at all. Branch out into other games, and grow them. Or be really patient and look for sales and discounts. Lastly, Except that you can’t play the expensive stuff, and be happy with your current models. Not much else to do really. Prices won’t come down, and they will increase again this year.
Sorry dude, sounds like a suck salad.
January 11, 2020 at 4:34 pm #1470007@slayerofworlds finding alternatives is a nice suggestion, but that assumes there are any out there that are a viable option for @hobbyhub
That one GW store may even be the only hobby related store/club within his area ..
//
I suspect that importing it from another country would run the risk of it getting caught by customs.
January 11, 2020 at 4:50 pm #1470008@limburger. What’s your point?
As I said… his only options are increase his money or change his hobbies.
I gave him the options I could think of, of which I figured he could then decide on his own whether they where worth persueing or not on his own.
Complaining about GW price serves zero purpose, literally zero. Everyone knows, no one cares. It’s never going to change.
January 11, 2020 at 6:15 pm #1470023@slayerofworlds complaining about GW prices serves a purpose.
We need to remind people that this silly pricing difference exists and that it needs to be dealt with.Accepting the situation and/or switching hobby/manufacturer may give GW reasons to either continue this insane pricing scheme or stop selling product completely. Neither is ideal for our hobby.
And as I said … it may not be a viable option for those affected.
I kind of doubt GW decided to raise these prices just for fun.
There’s got to be a reason and I wouldn’t be surprised if import taxes were part of the reason. At which point anything within this hobby may be affected.January 11, 2020 at 8:55 pm #1470024None of what you are saying, makes any sense. What is your point about anything you said?
The original poster can not afford to continue paying the high prices GW charges for products in his country.
So your answer is that, he should not look for alternatives to this problem because those alternatives “may not be a viable option for those affected”. What? The original post is about something that is literally no longer a viable option for him and already directly affects him. So your answer is to ignore other suggestions and look for alternatives…. cause…. you will may just end up in the same situation anyway? What kind of thinking is that?
Then you end reasoning is… besides “I kind of doubt GW decided to raise these prices just for fun. There’s got to be a reason and I wouldn’t be surprised if import taxes were part of the reason. At which point anything within this hobby may be affected.” Really? Well since you put it that way… I guess the original poster should just not be complaining at all. I mean You do understand that statement literally contradicts your argument that “complaining about GW prices serves a purpose.
We need to remind people that this silly pricing difference exists and that it needs to be dealt with.” You just countered your own statement in the same post you made it. Why? Really, just why bother making either statement. You are all over the place. I was so done with replying to you after that, but then you add… “Accepting the situation and/or switching hobby/manufacturer may give GW reasons to either continue this insane pricing scheme or stop selling product completely. Neither is ideal for our hobby.”
You are concerned that they might stop selling 40k. Really! Holy Shit! Just wow, I mean Wow. This just makes me shake my head, and laugh my ass off. Lets not upset the apple cart or they may “stop selling product completely”. Congratulations, you are part of the problem… but hey keep complaining online, just cause it hasn’t worked in the last decade or so, doesn’t mean it wont work. Some day. Some how. I however am done with you…. there is no talking to crazy.
January 11, 2020 at 11:27 pm #1470057$115 for ten figures? I’m glad I’m a historical gamer. That’s a whole Blood and Valor army.
January 11, 2020 at 11:45 pm #1470058Invest in a resin 3D printer, then you can print away to your heart’s content. Obviously this won’t allow you to play in a GW store, but that’s a small compromise.
If GW don’t start to sort out overseas pricing I can see sales in these markets falling as more people get access to 3D printing and the technology continues to improve and get cheaper.
January 12, 2020 at 2:06 am #1470063Hello everyone…
I was right in my guess of 35 quid – yay me.
I have options as to where I can play and who I can play.
Part of my thought process is shaped by the fact that I had been LGS, without the physical store part, for a number of years. I was seriously going to open up a full store, had even given up the day job and had a practice run in a popup store a year or so prior, when the market really changed and later the Warhammer store opened.
So I do have a fondness for using physical stores.
And as Warren has pointed out, 3D printing is a hobby in itself, and I don’t have the bandwidth to take up another hobby.
I have the money that I could spend on that box, but as some of you have pointed out, I could spend the money differently…
With the Island next door, sometimes colloquially referred to as the West Island, but more formally know as Australia, on fire, perhaps a donation to an organisation there, like the Aussie Red Cross, would be a better use.
