    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is The Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

If you fancy to see some nice WIP pictures go to the WAYPN thread https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/what-are-you-painting-now-2025-edition/

    ### End of shameless copy and paste ###

    Question of the week:

    • What would you like to see as a setting for “alternative history” and what direction would it take?

And now back to the show.

Pledge: continue work on my 5 houses for Frostgrave. Maybe even finish them? *dramatic drumroll*

Answer: I put out some ideas on the last THH but I’m not 100% sure on where to go. The further back you go in time the wilder the outcome could be. Imagine how the world could look if Julius Ceasar wasn’t killed? I’m leaving this to the pros!

    Music: New Megadeth!

This week’s pledge is to finish my current Inferno faction models for Heroes of Might and Magic 3, then move on to the Necropolis models which could be submitted for this month’s “spooky” painting competition.

    • What would you like to see as a setting for “alternative history” and what direction would it take? – I always liked the idea from the Frostpunk setting: burning coal in the industrial revolution triggers an ice age that wipes out most of the planet. Only pockets survive where they can cluster around a source of heat. Doesn’t really work for a wargame, but I thought the idea was very imaginative.

    Alt history ?

I’d like a more ‘realistic’ (ha!) variant of the ‘what if magic was real during medieval period’.
Fantasy settings seem to think that society won’t change and that period will last forever …

Steampunk is an alternate history of sorts that asks the question ‘what if steam was efficient and some of the wacky theories of that era were true’. And it makes the same mistake as fantasy: nothing changes as mankind seems to have an eternal victoriana period.

Twilight 2000 was a nice alternate history, but there was no ‘end goal’. The setting tends to focus on the chaotic period after things go to hell. There isn’t any real answer to ‘what happens afterwards’.

Konflikt ’47 kind of has the same issue. Will it evolve and really move the timeline forward ?
Or will there be an eternal status quo like in 40k where technology never changes, unless marketing demands it …

OTOH … it’s the period immediately after the ‘what if’ that is the most interesting. Let the time move forwards and it might as well be a fictional setting.

Finished watching ‘Invincible’ season 1 … it’s an interesting ‘super hero’ show.
This is kind of ‘what if : superheroes weren’t perfectly black&white morally and their heroics had consequences …

    And something cyberpunky

I’ve given up on pledges for the moment. Too many failures.

Feels like we are living in an alternate history timeline to me. One where a bunch of power mad headcases are in charge.

What if stupid selfish people ruled the world?

@danlee why shouldn’t that work? Agreed the terrain would be a bit boring with all the snow and ice but you could manage to make some post apocalyptic steam punk units. Think skirmish like Fallout Wasteland Warfare but with steampunk tech. I can see that working well.

    @pagan8th What CheeseMe said.

It’s Sunday. just finished the XLBS but my brain feels like mush. Don’t know why but I don’t like it!

Pledge: continue with the commission that never ends – I thought it was done, and … it’s BACK! With more coming. Good thing I enjoy it and it pays well.

Alternate timelines: haven’t been a huge hit with me, or any group I’ve played with (it’s been a long time). So not my jam?

Personally, I’m trying to find a goalie spot on a hockey team in the coveted daytime leagues; used to play 2-3 a day, 2/4 times a week. Since moving back to Calgary, there seems to be zero shortage of goalies. Used to get texted every day. Maybe I just need to keep trying to connect.

@sundancer You’re right. Whenever I think of “wargaming” I always default to mass battle until someone brings up skirmish or other game formats. Legacy of starting off in Warhammer Fantasy Battle for so many years I guess.

Pledge – To make some headway on my main project, the display terrain, I tried out some colour attempts, but I still need to crack on with them in a serious manner; they are just sitting there primed, taunting me.  Try and find something spooky for the paint comp and get printing it so I’m not so last-minute this month.

Alternative History – Blimps! Beautiful blimps. I want a world where the Hindenburg didn’t go down, bring me the airships we deserved. Such an alternative route to aviation style we have ended up, huge airports and loud, cramped aeroplanes, when we could have had skyscraper takeoff points and luxurious blimps crossing oceans.

It’s my youtube avatar @pagan8th because Limburger is also a rather infamous cheese 😀

    And I’m not 😛

Just in time for the spooky season:

(and to think that the original prop sold for loads of money at an auction … this is way cooler)

Finally moved my new pc to its proper place and my ‘old’ pc to the hobbyroom (can’t have too many pc’s, right ?). Technically there’s 3 pc’s in that room (my Surface Pro tablet and server live there as well).

I’m somehow still in the planning phase for my 1:1 scale terrain. If I keep this up then I will have everything ready for terrain challenge 😀
The one reason I’m still planning is that I’m still refining and iterating the plans with the help of claude.ai. And because there’s usage limits I often have to wait until I can talk again, which is frustrating as I am having to constantly tell it to stop making mistakes. Things like a box that’s 25cm high can’t hold a 1,5 liter bottle …

Claude.AI (v4.5) does appear to be better than Google’s Gemini, but the latter is a bit better at creating documents (of course it is .. it has access to Google’s Word and Excel equivalents whereas Claude does not)

@Lazagram   I almost was about to tell you about Leviathans by CGL but then I remembered they are actual sky ships and not blimps or zeppelins.
