    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    Introduce yourselves (New member thread)

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is The Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

If you fancy to see some nice WIP pictures go to the WAYPN thread https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/what-are-you-painting-now

    ### End of shameless copy and paste ###

    Question of the week:

    • Order of operation: Do you build and paint your models in the order you buy them, are you just doing the newest addition to your collection or is it “all over the place”?

And now back to the show.

Pledge: continue work on the not-LotR diorama. I’m almost there!

Answer: It’s all… sorted chaotically? What ever fires my creativity. But I’m curious: is there actually someone who does them in order of buying? (First in first out) Hard to imagine.

Pledge is to continue working on Afrika Korps, but I’m also starting up Arabian Nights RPG and painting those as I need them.

I tend to build the models as I get them and prime them… but then it’s a chaos. I paint what I need, or what I’m in the mood for.

On an unrelated topic… yesterday I had a delivery of some resin western building for my Dead Man’s Hand game. Although they are 28mm, they are smaller than the TTCombat MDF building I have and it’s noticeable. I’d use them for Bolt Action instead, but they really look a bit too old west.

In the last week I have unspent £350 by cancelling orders for a 3D printer and some resin minis that I wanted, but didn’t need. And someone is buying Warcry Starter Set off me to go with the two warbands I sold him.

I’m trying to clear some space and get rid of some games that I’ve not played, or probably won’t play again. Inevitably I will buy something to fill the gap, but I’m trying to control my ‘buy the shiny’ impulse.

My pledge is to continue working on my entries for KublaCon next month as well as Crisis Protocol minis.

In answer to Sundancer, I have long painted whatever was sparking my creativity. A year and a half ago I was introduced to Crisis Protocol and for about nine months I would assemble and paint the minis in the order I bought them.  Then I picked up a couple of collections on eBay and that went out the window.  Now I’m back to old habits

    Painting or assembling things  ?

what strange thing is this ?

I’m sure I would first assemble them and then try painting … not sure about anyone else 😉

My only problem is that whenever inspiration strikes it only takes a bit of new shiny news to derail my thoughts.
I hope I can focus on getting my hobby room ready for assembly and painting for reals.
There’s no way I’d ever find the things at the bottom of the pile of opportunity though.
As such I’d have to settle for whatever inspires me first when I’m properly setup …

For all foreigners : it’s king day tomorrow (saturday 26th!) because the fckers refuse to party on a sunday.
Expect to see tourists wondering where the festivities are when they arrive next week 😉

I’m retired , so most of my day is watching videos and sitting at the hobby bench .  95% of what I build / paint is WW2 related , 28mm troops and vehicles . In the past month I’ve got about 20 tank kits , a box of plastic  troops  and a dozen or so metal ones . I tend to build tanks to replicate / match photos or diagrams in books . I’m a model builder as opposed to a war gamer . Since I have multiples of most tanks I can build  a tank in numerous ways , example Panzer IV full side skirts , missing side skirts but with side rails , battle damaged and knocked out , all hatches open with a full crew , covered in tank rider infantry , ambush camo pattern Normandy , winter white wash Eastern front .

I usually have an idea of which vehicle I want to build and just need the right picture to get the creative juices flowing . That being said , I can get sidetracked by one vehicle while I’m looking for pictures of another . Having a stack of kits I find I never get bored with the hobby , if I loose interest in a kit I just put all related pieces in a plastic bin and build something else . I might come back to it in a weeks time or maybe like those 2 Italeri M13/40s it might be almost a year , but I did get my interest back and finish them .

This week I built 2 Panzer IVs , one with some tank riders  to match one I finished last year , built a Tiger 1 in winter whitewash , finding use for a couple of  the new resin / plastic Warlord German winter tank crew figures . I’m now working on a Hetzer as well as  kit bashing crew figures for a couple of Stugs . Never a dull moment .

Saturday has arrived and I find myself totally unprepared for a weekend.  I’m sure it will sort itself out.
Pledge:  Get the shields done on the first Shuwa Arabs unit for my Spring Clean Challenge.  This unit is 24 models and it is taking ages.
Answer:  I taught Project Management so you’d think I would have a detailed and reliable order of operation alrady worked out.  ‘Fraid not.  I’m a hobby butterfly and have learnt over the years to go with the flow of enthusuiasm.  This means I actually get stuff done.  I find it increasingly hard to make myself do something I’m not in the mood for on the hobby table.  Therefore I can sometimes buy. build, paint, base and play with something all within a week.  More often though my grand planning isn’t matched by my available time/enthusiasm and stuff returns to the drawers or boxes and has to wait for the next burst of enthusiasm.  They do come around though so it isn’t often that I get rid of stuff because I know I’m never going to finish it.

Gaps seem to fill themselves somehow! @pagan8th

I feel that’s the way it should be. Always to the stuff that tickles your fancy to keep juices flowing. @144artist

Well that’s the story of the mechanic driving the busted car, the cook eating ready made meals and the accountant not having any system to organise their bills and stuff XD

More often though my grand planning isn’t matched by my available time/enthusiasm and stuff returns to the drawers or boxes and has to wait for the next burst of enthusiasm.

Oh I feel that. Even sometimes during planning I know I need at least X hours of time in one go to get stuff tune and that immediately kills all drive. (Gods I could remember how to spell immediately there. I is getting old)

@sundancer the gap will fill itself soon enough… as I was random selected for a wayland voucher by this very website…

Soon as I get I will be browsing…

@pagan8th lies … I bet you’re browsing in order to prepare for the browsing when you get that voucher 😉

    //
I got absolutely feck all done yesterday, because at one point I was checking why my Xbox wasn’t connecting to the network.

And then once I got that going I started ‘Watch dogs: Legions’ (Gamepass … so ‘free’).
Me being me and the game being one of those ‘open world sandboxes’ not having clearly defined chapters it meant I was playing the rest of the day. Plus it was King day because the fcker refuses to have his event when it’s on a sunday, which was another reason not to leave the house.

Today I need to do some grocery shopping which I didn’t do yesterday either.
I hope I can stick to my plan today, but I doubt it.

@limburger I might have been browsing in preparation, but there’s nothing I really want at the moment as I’ve been doing my best not to buy anything. Possibly a new battlemat. I have Star Wars Legion that could use some icy terrain although something green might work better for Bolt Action (already have a desert for my Afrika Korps).

Daggerheart is out soon, but not sure that system will suit my players (or me). I need to see a playthrough by someone other than crit role as they are inevitably biased as it’s their game.

    #1926645

I’ve tried to adopt a “last in, first out” approach as a way to keep things from piling up, but I’ve fallen into the “all over the place” camp. Shatterpoint tends to jump the line, since that’s the game I’m enjoying the most at the moment, and I occasionally write “how to paint” articles on it for Goonhammer.

I’m currently working on two projects for the UKGE painting contest, one with models I bought specifically for the project, and the other a board game that I got a few months ago.

Beyond that I have a bunch of stuff I ordered last year (or earlier) that I haven’t started on yet. The worst offender is several boxes of models for Test of Honour that have been languishing since 2020. I suffer from a bit of the “eyes bigger than stomach” problem, but it’s not as bad as it could be.

Pledge update: I got the shields done – I’m concerend the final finish is a bit dark so might go with a lighter drybrush to lift it a bit.  Not sure?

    20250426_151240907_iOS

It looks nearly black in the photo – it is a bit lighter than that – grey speedpaint over the brown undercoat.

    Morning. It’s Monday.

@zoidpinhead if you’re unsure about the black: put the mini in context. So with other minis on the gaming table with normally lit room. That way you’ll see how it looks to others. Right now you’re too focused and the dark shield in front of a white/bright background doesn’t help

Spotted these on GW website. Forgeworld resin so stupid expensive probably, but they look amazing.

    Be great warbeasts for Hordes.
