### Start of shameless copy & paste ###
First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…
Read all of this before you start as it will save any trouble later.
First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.
You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.
If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.
A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil.
Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.
Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)
And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is the unofficial Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv
### End of shameless copy & paste ###
Questions:
- What’s the last project you have finished?
- What project do you really want to be finished?
- Why are some people such painting machines? (Looking at you there @tuffyears and @panzerkaput
Discuss!
April 16, 2021 at 5:54 am #1636374Pledge: can’t pledge… waiting for an order of… stuff….
- The Kids On Wheels by Morgue Miniatures.
- The lurking Star Wars: Legion minis… I need to get back on the wave.
- Well…. how should I know?!
Also quick question: I’m trying my hand in doing little build videos… should the VO be German or English? I am tempted to do them in German for a change.
April 16, 2021 at 6:04 am #1636376@blinky465 re: bones I think you’re right… but I can’t really tell because I only have a very old Bones model and the first ones weren’t highly detailed at all. Better board game pieces.
Maybe I should try that thing too….
ARGH! Too many options!
April 16, 2021 at 7:25 am #1636378What is VO mate?
April 16, 2021 at 7:26 am #1636379I pledge to paint more for my Barons War
:lol
April 16, 2021 at 7:59 am #1636380Voice Over. So when you see a video with an audio track that has been added later.
April 16, 2021 at 9:39 am #1636418German or English? Well, I guess it depends on who you’re targetting. You’d vastly cut your audience opportunity if it’s entirely in German. But if it’s a video for you and your (German) pals, go for it!
I forgot who, but I often watch a terrain guy on Youtube whose videos are in (what sounds to me like) German. A few weeks after release, his videos usually get English subtitles, so I don’t have to guess at what he’s saying or explaining. So “foreign language” videos aren’t a barrier for some – but a lot of people would just click away. If you’re not chasing viewer numbers, do whatever you feel comfortable with – though subtitles (not Youtube auto-generated ones) would be nice, even if it does more than double your workload 😉
April 16, 2021 at 9:43 am #1636423@blinky465 I’m pretty sure you’re watching Michael Martin on “Tabletop Workshop”. He also did the XPS book with Gerard Boom from Shiftinglads.
April 16, 2021 at 10:01 am #1636432What’s the last project you have finished?
This creepy little thing. From the moment I saw the preview on the Great Grimoire Patreon, I knew what I wanted to do with it (and knew exactly which family member would both love and be horrified by it). I finished it about two weeks ago and sent it in the post. They loved it (though, at first, their 9-year-old son asked for it to be kept out of sight because it’s “a bit creepy” – now he’s pestering me on Zoom to learn how to make servos move and LEDs light up – mission accomplished!)
What project do you really want to be finished?
My electronic board game has been over a year in “proper development”. Most of that, admittedly on a new app for it, but it’s getting close now. I’ve played a few games of “battle royale” over the ‘net with friends and family over the interwebs, so it’s working really well. It needs stuff like log-in screens and a final “game over” screen to really finish things off – it’s close. So very close….
Why are some people such painting machines?
Man, there is so much to unwind in this question! Work, free time, understanding spouse/family, other hobbies…. I swear some people get more hours in a day than others. I could have a 36-hour day and still not have enough time to fit in everything I want to get done! A 10-day week and I’d still feel like I was neglecting some hobbies over others (I’m learning to play my guitar properly after 25 years – with a plectrum and everything – so my electronics, miniatures, gaming, cycling, canal boating… are all getting less time than I’d like).
But mostly, I reckon it’s about knowing when something is “done” and moving on to the next. I spend far too long on each miniature I paint (at around 4-6 hours per minis). For some people, that’s nowhere near enough to get nice creamy blends (I don’t bother) wet-on-wet blends for gradients, super-high-contrast pop-py blacklining etc. But then, I sometimes feel like I take my painting further than a lot of other people (I can’t leave a sharp edge un-highlighted for example). Some would see my cartoon-y edge-highlighted, paint-your-eyes-and-hands style a “bit much” and settle for a base coat, wash and pick out a few details – which would allow them to power through far more minis in a single session. For me, my minis are “done” when I’m happy with them. For some, they’d still consider them unfinished, others would say I’d gone over-the-top.
Guys like GooberTown Brent on Youtube will paint up an army of, like, 20 minis over a weekend and call them done. Personally, I’d say his finished stage is my “now go in and paint the edge highlights” stage. He’s always going to paint x20 more minis in the same time as me!
Here’s some music for your lugholes. It’s White Lion. With some of the most exquisite guitar playing you’ll hear for a while.
April 16, 2021 at 10:03 am #1636435@sundancer – I think you’re absolutely right.
April 16, 2021 at 10:19 am #1636444Man, there is so much to unwind in this question! Work, free time, understanding spouse/family, other hobbies…. Yeah, I feel pretty much the same. But at the same time I sit in front of my PC aimlessly surfing 9gag, youtube and the likes and waste 2 hours I could do anything. Reading more in one of the many books I have started. Paint some minis/terrain or even work on my voice over… Yes, I know sometimes you need to take a step back to breathe again but still the time feels wasted…
Well, I’m going to have a lot of time at home giving current situation… apart from grocery shopping and going to work everything else is being closed again. Happy times…
April 16, 2021 at 10:48 am #1636460Closed?! Here in the UK, we’re celebrating that pub beer gardens finally re-opened (I’ve yet to venture out myself, but I’ve a vaccine booked for next Sunday so who knows….) and the general feeling is, it’s “all over” now! You’re going back into lockdown?
Try not to feel like you’re “wasting” time when you’re taking care of yourself. It’s partly why I insist on spending time just going and sitting on the beach with my wife (swimming in the warmer weather). Resting is important. Prioritise rest over “being productive” – then again, that probably also explains why I’ve got such angst over not finishing my own game – because I refused to put it ahead of “chilling out” and resting 😉
I’ll get my app finished and maybe we could arrange a game over the ‘web? It’s less “cyberpunk RPG” and more “space hulk against the AI” this time around. But it’s still pushing miniatures around a tabletop game. I’ll get the map pieces prepared for printing and email a link…. you could be a beta tester too 😉
April 16, 2021 at 2:13 pm #1636542April 16, 2021 at 3:59 pm #1636583Happy weekend everyone! Hope the week has been kind to you all.
Pledge is to do more on the Garden of Morr. I’m not going to finish it I don’t think but if I can make good headway I’ll be happy.
Questions:
What’s the last project you have finished? Somewhat painful to admit but probably painting up Star Wars Legion at the start of the year. I spent a lot of time recently part painting and then moving onto something else.
What project do you really want to be finished? the terrain for the Frostgrave project. I’m not a fan of painting terrainbuti don’t want to play with unpainted crap either.
Why are some people such painting machines? Yeah, like Blinky said, a combination of a different finishing point but also priorities. I have come to accept that I have too many hobbies and feel like I don’t spend enough time with any one of them. I don’t know what is going to go but something has to I think. I’ve been trying to be more cognisant of how I spend my time recently – like you @sundancer I was finding myself hours into a YouTube or Reddit binge and not feeling either energised or relaxed by it. When I notice it I go back to this video:
As for some music, let’s start with
April 16, 2021 at 5:06 pm #1636609The weeks are wizzing by so fast.
This weekend I plan on painting a few more models from the Core Space game. I intend on using these models for Stargrave. I started a project for this https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1635081/#snav
What’s the last project you have finished?
Do we every really finish a project? I recently finished a few more npc creatures for Frostgrave
I have quite a lot of creatures ready now, all painted. What project do you really want to be finished?
My World Eaters Chaos Marine force. I’ve had this army for years and the end is in sight but I just keep seeing other miniatures I want to paint first.
Why are some people such painting machines?
I wish I was. There are just too many nice miniatures out there and I want them all.
