    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is The Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

If you fancy to see some nice WIP pictures go to the WAYPN thread https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/what-are-you-painting-now

    Question of the week:

    • Summertime: what is your secret to stay cool while doing hobby?

And now back to the show.

Pledge: Add stuff to my Frostgrave band as we will be starting a proper playthrough for the missions in the book.

My answer: Keep my feet flat to the cool ground without my usual house shoes. Move as little as possible and maybe a fan.

    Music: Something colourful

This week’s pledge is to do nothing. Too hot to paint without risking paint drying in the bristles and ruining them.

    • Summertime: what is your secret to stay cool while doing hobby? – As you may have guessed, my approach is to not do hobby when it gets too hot.

My pledge is get some painting done in my week off. Not sure what yet. I’d also like to do a solo game of some kind.

When I was out on my duty today it rained… it was amazing… first time in days I felt cool at work… pity it didn’t start 2 hours early when I was stir fried in the sun.

My secret to staying cool doing hobby is to find the coolest room in the house, put an electric fan on… and take off all my clothes.

Pledge: no painting this week – I’m going camping! Solo trip to Banff, looking forward to a week in the mountains.

Keep cool? Air conditioning! Ice cold. My hobby room is on the north face of my townhome too, so it doesn’t get excessively hot anyway.

Pledge update.  I finished my posts for my SPC yesterday.  I really enjoyed the whole challenge – one of my favourite activities here at OTT.  I’m painting anything else this week – I’ve settled upon some English Knights for my Age of Chivalry force.  I’m trying out the Darkstar metallics.  I use Vallejo Metal Color which have a high density of metal pigment but I don’t like them as they are too thin in consistency to make for easy dry brushing.  The Darkstar is much thicker, like a regular acrylic paint, but with a similar high density of metal pigment.  I’ll post some thoughts in my Saga project when I’m finished.

Summertime keeping cool:  My hobby room is in the oldest part of the house which is a traditional stone and cob building.  The walls are 3 feet thick and keep the ambient temperature consistent in that part of the house.

secret ? not doing a bloody thing if possible … and eating ice as often as possible.
No real time to hobby in this bloody heat that’s for sure.

I am hoping to do a bit more in my project as it is supposed to cool down in the next few days.

    @zoidpinhead
you lucky b*stard. That sounds like a proper hobby cave 😀
OTOH .. if it ever does get warm in there it’s going to take ages for it to cool down.

@limburger If it regularly gets hot in there we’ll all have more to worry about than whether the paint will dry out!  The issue is more with keeping it warm in the winter – there is a wood burner but no central heating.

Ice cream is definitely helping.  I get one for me and one for the dog as the local country shop does ice cream specifically for dogs.

Can you folks help me out here:

I’ve had a go with the Darkstar metallics and this is the comparison shot:

    20250621_134117672_iOS

The new way is on the left, the old way is on the right.  I think the new way clearly looks better – more complex tones and a brighter shine.  The one I’m not sure about is the middle one which is the new technique with an extra layer of the Vallejo Metal Color over the top of the Dark Star.  Does it look any better than the one on the left?

@zoidpinhead  left and middle I can’t really see much of a difference. They look both better than the one on the right ever so slightly.

Thanks @torros @grantinvanman @sundancer I appreciate the assistance.  I think I’ll probably go with the middle one, even though the difference is only marginal and it is an extra stage.  It may feel like dancing on the head of a pin but it is the marginal gains that keep us improving 🙂  Happy Monday everyone.

I’m not sure I like beasts of war verifying that I’m human when I visit the website.

Humans are bad. They are destroying the planet and voting imbeciles into politcal office.

    I demand to reclassified!!!

I thought we were all OTTers?  Cloudflare should be checking that we are all Mustelids.  Mind you that includes weasels and skunks so I guess every family has its issues 😀
