[Yes, that was a bad one but I had to]

    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is The Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

If you fancy to see some nice WIP pictures go to the WAYPN thread https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/what-are-you-painting-now

    ### End of shameless copy and paste ###

    Question of the week:

    • UKGE – How many games peeked your interest so far?

And now back to the show.

Ma’ pledge: maybe paint the primed minis? Or… build some AC?

Answer: none so far but I have only watched so little. Sunday will be more fruitful for answers I guess.

Pledge: none this weekend, I have a whole funeral thing to deal with. Mrs Grantinvanman’s grandma was 102. That’s a helluva run.

UKGE: I’m like Gollum, I’m NOT LOOKING. I ordered a new guitar and it comes in probably in the next week, so that’s my hobby budget and then some. A Fender Custom Shop “51 Nocaster”. A real one would be around $500,000; so this is like saving $494,000 🤡

Pledge:  Have a nice calm day painting tiny fighting men on Sunday after someone comes to view the house on Saturday morning.

Question:  UKGE is usually something I pay close attention to but I’m in a phase where boardgames are not so appealing.  I have got rid of quite a few of the smaller ones and even decided to move Kingdom Death on (on eBay atm for those interested).  I also got to see all of the new shiny in wargaming having been at Partizan a couple of weekends ago.  I will take time to work through the content because it is always good to see what is out there.  So to answer the question directly – none, yet.

@grantinvanman 6k ? that’s way beyond what I’d be comfortable with spending on anything …

I must admit that I’ve looked at pc configurations that were close to that kind of money, but haven’t pulled the trigger on that (yet).

OTOH … my trike was more expensive, but then that’s like a car to other people so it technically was cheap 😉

    //

    UKGE ?
Konflikt ’47, but that’s more because Warlord announced they’d  have something to show this weekend.
It could have been any day of the week …

I also blame Ben for mentioning that kickstarter
    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/misfithobbies/the-adventurers-guide-to-alchemy
Fantasy cocktails that you can drink ? I wanna know more.

I doubt there’s one that I could make, but I wanna see what they invented as it sounds more interesting than the Battletech cookbook which was just a bunch of stolen recipes with battletech names.

Hobby-wise I got back from the yellow/blue store with a new lamp to install in my hobby room. I felt it needed something a bit more dramatic. The instructions that came with it are a puzzle, which is weird as a light fixture should not need instructions but somehow they managed to make it complicated (or the one I got is defective and I haven’t noticed it yet?)

@limburger the best thing about being retired and having a pension, is that no matter what I do, money shows up every month. Magic! I just get to pick how to use it. The Nocaster is a “grail guitar” for me. So, worth it. 😁

I wish I could have that kind of retirement plan when my time comes … but I have my doubts.
Sure, there’s less taxes to pay but I already know that the mortgage is unlikely to have been paid off 100% (unless I get lucky and win a lottery … )

Is there any actual difference in guitars at that price range ?
I can understand that budget guitars have to sacrifice things, but there’s got to be a price level where it stops being noticable unless you are a pro guitar player, right ?

I do understand that anything that has to be hand crafted can be pretty expensive (heck, my trike is expensive for much the same reason).

Honestly, this is beyond the level where a guitar is already great, and the differences are subtle. A similar one, not Custom Shop, would be half price. I’m paying a premium to get exactly what I want. This is about my max level for a guitar, though. And there are absolutely more expensive guitars out there.

My Expo visit is done, but I’ll check out the coverage in case I missed something.

Bought some more minis from Crooked Dice including the Fruit Loops (not the Banana Splits obviously). Also got some wild west minis from Black Scorpion. And I bought paints, brushes and rattlecan primers.

There were things I was tempted by, but resisted.

I find it frustrating that if you buy direct from the creator of a product you have to pay the full price whereas if you shop around you can get 10-20% off.

Almost bought Blood and Plunder starter, but that’s a big box and I’d rather get that posted.

The new Chicago Way Peaky Blinders was almost in my hand. but it’s so similar to Dead Man’s Hand.

0200 Hours was picked up and put down. Need to see how Traitors Toll works first.

    Savage Worlds Deadlands was temptation.

If I had less willpower I would have spent a thousand, but that’s a lot of money, so I didn’t.

Those stalls at big events aren’t exactly cheap … so it’s unlikely they can afford to give you a discount.

Back when there were big computer conventions the best way to get a discount was to go on the last day as they wanted to get rid of as much left over stock as possible. I don’t know if such things happen at the expo.

I don’t mind paying retail pricing when buying direct, because all that ‘extra’ money goes to them directly (at least I hope).

Yeah, I get that. But you still need to think of it this way: creators sell to retailers at a very low margin of profit so that the retailer still can make a reasonable profit. But the retailer usually sells multiple things so he can balance margin of profit and thus make some very good prices.

You might not be buying at the best price but buying directly from the creator makes them make the most money and offset the costs of such events like UKGE.  That being said, I too buy from an online store (with a retail shop attached) because my hobby budget only goes so far.  There is no perfect solution to this sadly.

That’s still the case but I think that’s mainly a thing with international events like Spiel and cebit back in the day when vendors would technically have to pay import taxes for their own stuff when bringing goods back from conventions. Hence why they sold it of cheaply.

Saturday! And I’m lazy as fuck 8)

Why the heck do electric cables need to be so damned stiff and annoying?
I finally managed to get the new lights installed (definitely better and more light now), but getting that connected was frustrating. And of course it’s now obvious that the lights aren’t centered on the table, which is going to annoy me in the future.

This week’s pledge is to start my next mini for practicing skin tones.

    • UKGE – How many games peeked your interest so far? – I popped over yesterday afternoon and did a few hours shopping. My reasoning was OTT coverage would tell me what I need to know about new games. I picked up a Potion of Healing decoration (seemed quite unique and hand crafted) and an expansion for Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (somehow, despite backing both crowdfunders “all in”, I hadn’t got the Inferno expansion).

Depends on how much volts you plan on pushing through. And is it solid core or in strains? Correct cabling is difficult 🙂

Will there be a project? 🙂
