I’ve been experimenting with some artist inks recently, both brushed on and applied with an airbrush. In particular I’ve been using the Liquitex range. I’ve found a lovely purple that once applied, gives an almost metallic finish that I really like and want to keep.

The problem I have is that the miniature will be handled in games and requires a varnish coat to protect the paint job. I used my usual varnish, Dale Rowney soluble gloss/matt and this has completely deadened the paint and look to a very flat purple. I’ve never had an issue with these varnishes before and regardless of what I’ve applied them over, the underlying paint and finish hasn’t been changed. So metallic paints have always had a metallic look, crystal paints have retained their look etc.

So can anyone recommend a varnish for artist inks that don’t change the look of the ink?
