    Hi all,

Long time gamer but new to X-Wing. Just bought v2 as a Christmas gift.  Does anyone have recommendations for a good playing surface or mat?  Does anything come in the box to get you started? What size playing area is good for beginners?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Well, I played in v1.0 so don’t know if it’s changed but if playing a 100 point dog-fight then 3′ x 3′.  If  larger squadrons then you can increase the table size as is needed.

we used a 4’x 4′ most of the time.

Usually any 3′ x 3′ mat works. I’ve used the official FFG map since day one of V1 (mostly because I didn’t know better and at the time there where not many options.)

Mousepad material works best. So just look at what design you like the most and get it.

    Thanks very much, chaps!

I have ordered a 3’ x 3’ mousemat mat with a snazzy space picture.  I just need to get some ‘how-to-play’ videos under my belt now, before Christmas, to prepare. 😀

The basic rules (ie : none of the tokens and special tricks) are easy to learn (I’d say one hour max). You’ll find that maneuvering your spaceships can be enough of a challenge. Especially if you’re going to be teaching it to kids and people with less afinity with wargames (although Roborally veterans may have an advantage here ;-)).

@fogh FFG did a short series for V1 back in the day that was really good. Most is still true today in ways of rules. Maybe that’s a first stop?

@fogh FFG = Fantasy Flight Games … the publisher for Xwing

These are the videos that @sundancer was referring to :

It’s odd that they haven’t updated these for the v2.0 rules, which is odd because there probably are more than a few changes to the rules. Although I suspect that the core mechanics are the same.

@fogh see the post my trusty assistant @limburger did 😉

But, yeah, it’s odd. More so since they did a really good job on them. And the first videos for Star Wars Legion were very good too. I really wonder why they stopped doing them? Time? Money?

Cheap option, but for space hulk, I just used my coblestreets mat upsidedown, which gave me a matt black backdrop.  Works for space hulk as you see hardly any of the mat, but may not suit xwing so well.
