Broken Spirit Wargames are working towards a launch of their game system on Kickstarter, Immortal. The game is a Dark Age Fantasy skirmish game pitting standard Dark Age warbands and nations against each other then throwing in a few angels, demons and other spirits to shake things up!

The game centres around a number of different warbands inspired by the time period including the Romano-British, Picts, Welsh, Irish, Saxons or Tribes of Barbarians and Cultists. Add to that enigmatic and powerful heroes like Warlord and Priests who can choose Blessings to give them the edge in combat and you have a neat little skirmish system.

Broken Spirit have put together a PDF right now that not only contains quick start rules but also provides you with a scenario called The Raid to play out as well. In this game you'll be trying to take control of the enemy lands and raid them for provisions and more before scarpering off with them.

Stone Circle

Spirit of the Woods

While the game in its current state doesn't go into the whys and wherefores of the spirits and such it does talk about some of the interesting mechanics that set the game apart. One of those is the Scouting mechanic which allows those warbands with better knowledge of the terrain to effectively pick their battleground, much like they would in real life. It's a simple dice roll allowing you to move terrain around but it's a neat addition.

Combat is done in a similar manner to that of Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit and Legends of the Old West. Simply roll a dice and the highest number wins with the draw being decided by the level of ferocity a model has. It's simple and efficient for quick skirmish games.

Romano British Warrior

As mentioned above the game focuses in on the Dark Ages and can effectively play as a basic historical game if you like (and that's how it works right now) but there are more options down the line for adding a whole range of different Fantasy elements. I can't wait to see what they do with the likes of spirits and such you've seen in the image above. I like the idea of mysterious standing stones and weird goings on!

Romano British Cavalry

Above are some of the different units that you'll be picking up for this game. Once again you have the historical units in the Romano British Cavalry and below them some more interesting 'fantasy' additions in the Arteblasts. These particular crossbow armed warriors would fight for the Good factions in the game world.

One of the interesting things about this game is that you're pretty much open to pick up any historical miniatures you like for the period of Arthurian to the Late Dark Ages and then when it comes to the Fantasy side of things you can go wild and pick up stuff from any company. For example you could pick up your Historical stuff from Footsore and then your Fantasy from West Wind (as they did above for the Arteblasts).

Immortal Quick Start Rules & Scenario

Give the game a go and let us know what you think of it. If nothing else it's great to have another Dark Age skirmish game to play!
