July 16, 2014 by dignity
Once in a while you get a boxed set of miniatures that is a must have for collectors. Justin has got his hands on one such box and its the Pinups of Death Collection from Kingdom Death! These are some very stunning ladies!
Take a look and let us know your thoughts on these miniatures.

There were no building instructions in the box I put together so I had to use the visual reference from their site to help get them all assembled. Two of the ladies have alternative parts so not every collection will look the same.
Forsaker had to be the hardest lady to put together as she has many many small parts. Dry fit everything before gluing.
IMHO i feel this miniatures are made for experience hobbyist, i know it will be easier with building instructions ( and maybe they should add those for the KD:M ), but yeah, some bits are so odd and unique that with out some reference is hard to spot the right place.
Technically amazing.
But they are not my cup of tea at all. Far to sexualised for my tastes.
This image explain how Justin and i ( probably many other KD fans feel when they see this )
Remember : Pin-Ups! They are meant to be this way. And good news, male pin-ups coming soon! 😀 Adam talked about those in the last KD:M update, is great to see them open up that door, i’m sure there was many people waiting for those. Might get one just to make my 666 ladies some company :P.
lol bud 🙂
Did some clicking around the web and found where some of these minis cost “$15-40 a pop.”
That’s not . . . TOO bad in a game where I don’t think you’d need dozens of minis (like BA, FoW, 40K, etc).
The quality and (ahem) shape of the minis, however, is jaw-dropping, mesmerizing, breath-taking. So they’re a little expensive? Think of all the money I’ll save when my girlfriend sees these minis and storms out of the house! 🙂 No more flowers, no more chocolates, no more going out to eat . . .
I know, I know. Booo, hiss. Just kidding. 🙂 She’d probably only be mad because I didn’t buy any for her as well. 😀
Buy her some male pin-ups 😉
Do we really need to encourage this type of adolescence?
Well, since it’s sold out, you won’t have to anyway… lol
Fair point @cpauls1, we should go back to encouraging other types of adolescence such as overgrown genetic supermen bringing death to the galaxy :p
Happily I don’t buy into that silliness either.
That’s OK.I think my older brother bought some. I have some friends coming over for a sleepover later, so we’re going to snitch a few and look at them under the covers with a flashlight.
You’ll go blind doing that?
Epic! 😀
I think it’s rather artfully done… It’s erotica, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
“Sexualized” is fine with me… I don’t mind sexy minis, just liek I don’t mind seeing people as sexy (AS WELL as seeing them as people), and being seen as sexy too.
As long as both sexes are represented and that no one is disparaged or portrayed as inferior, I don’t find it “objectifying”.
Tell me that lion guy with the three naked women splayed out in servile positions around him isn’t disparaging.
That one is, yes, but we’re not unboxing HIM, are we ?
I’m sure it wont be long until we have some dominatrix like monster with a host of male servants chained together.
The thing is, and we should be very clear about this. And I am sure Romain will be the same on this. These are pinups. There is no beating around the bush on this. They are upfront about the intentions and demographic these models (not game pieces) are for.
As for the main game and the figures designed for it, again lets be clear. It is a game about horror, in a no holds barred way. Horror is uncomfortable. And we as customers can buy into, or not, that depiction as we see fit, just as the artist can express their vision of their world to whatever extreme they wish.
Now does this mean that body horror, with not limits, and so free to use reproductive organs as part of that horror, is titillation? Maybe it is being upfront and going for the jugular on what are considered societal taboos. But let’s be clear, horror means disturbing, otherworldly, grotesque. These are not being marketed as kids toys (Hi GW and your overtly sexual Dark Elves and Demonettes of Slannesh!).
And that means as adults perhaps we should be willing to take responsibilities for our choices. That means knowing that we may well enjoy things that are of questionable taste. That is no bad thing, so long as we are willing to accept the critique of that. Because if we start shaming each other for tastes, we then getting into the slippery slope of thought policing each other’s kinks. And by kinks I am talking wholesome kinks like BDSM, and not nefarious stuff that harms minors etc.
You see this gets us into the issue of bad wrong feminism. Is a feminist woman still one for choosing her children over her career? For wearing high heels? For wearing lipstick? Am I a bad feminist for liking figures that represent a certain type of fantasy horror?
It all comes down to choice, and understanding those choices and accepting the critique.
“I’m sure it wont be long until we have some dominatrix like monster with a host of male servants chained together . . .”
Oh . . . man. From your lips to God’s ears (or to Kingdom Death’s design studios, at least). That’s a mini I’ve got to see! 😀
“And we as customers can buy into, or not, that depiction as we see fit, just as the artist can express their vision of their world to whatever extreme they wish” I like that you put the word “extreme” in that sentence, art should have no bound as long as it doesn’t affect directly third persons.
Calling Dark Elves or Demonettes of Slannesh overtly sexual is like calling chocolate delicious… is what they should be by essence. At least for me Slannesh is not well represented at all, the 666 Satan from KD:M are 1000 times more Slaaneshy than any other model in the entire GW range. You already now what will be my replacement for plasma cannons…
Hobbies are for express your fascinations, aesthetically interest and desires. BDSM is a hobby, one that should be take very seriously because it will affect you mind in bad ways if is not done properly and you are not prepared. Any extreme that you go forward and experience that you take will mark you, how you deal with those marks is your responsibility. And by the way… Pin Ups are elegant, they have style and class, is not grotesque and cheese like many things that TV portraits almost all the time
“You see this gets us into the issue of bad wrong feminism. Is a feminist woman still one for choosing her children over her career? For wearing high heels? For wearing lipstick? Am I a bad feminist for liking figures that represent a certain type of fantasy horror?” : Bla, people need to learn to don’t give a huge F about anything anyone things of themselves, at the end of the day you go to sleep with you every single day until you turn into dust ( or a plastinated sculpture if you signed for that kind of thing, see you in the next exhibition 😉 ). Rather than criticize others for the interest or desires they should focus on fight for what they want to be, being positive and construct other alternatives rather than bash the existing ones. I believe that we should be like birds ( don’t laugh, keep on reading… if you are not tired yet 😛 ) : Have no differentiated roles or stereotypes because of gender, since gender is a degree and it doesn’t even have to be with masculinity or femininity. I’m male straight but i consider myself somewhat feminine and i tend to look for a bit more masculine womens, and i know a few women that are like that, looking exactly the opposite, so i don’t see why gender has to divide us so much in this topics ( hell i know female youtubers that love KD minis, the pin up ones! ). Really i don’t get it.
One last thing : Waiting for the Male pin-ups, that’s all i ask…. and a battle mat made of b***s and b***s ( i’ll leave it to your own twisted mind 😉 ).
But it’s the same company, the one that puts babies underfoot and even degrades pregnant women. But silly me, I forgot this is the Internet, where testosterone trumps bad taste every time.
Can I ask, where is you line with horror? Where is the limit to body horror? I’m just curious?
Degrades pregnant women ?! Where have you seen them degraded ? It’s graphic horror, and very well done at that ! If you don’t like it, don’t watch it.
Do you deem it “teenage” ? Well, that’s interesting, in a community of people who play with toy soldiers for fun…
Do you deem it shocking because of nudity ? I daresay you aren’t shocked, merely shocked on behalf of others… Do kindly allow people to make their own decisions as to what shocks them, and simply say nothing, or say you don’t like it, but don’t say that it shouldn’t exist or that it “shouldn’t be encouraged”.
The man has made them, they’re selling, it’s fine by me. It’s not like a cruddy badly sculpted rape scene from Brother Vinni, and it’s not HALF AS SHOCKING as the racism, fascism, homophobia and willful demeaning of civilization and culture that emanates constantly from the 40k universe… I hate it, quite a lot. And do I protest against it, or say anything ? Nope. Because it’s just toy soldiers.
If you want to demean something or point out evil, start where it’s the most obvious and prominent, please, not just where the “bewbs” are.
Also, I resent the “testosterone vs. taste” comment, as a gay man… AND simply as a person. This isn’t 4chan or Youtube comments, this is a very respectful and civilized community.
And while I’m on the subject, let me add that the ideologically nauseating GW stuff is marketed for children and accepted in toy stores, whereas KD is clearly a product for discerning adults… Not to even mention the quality.
A quick discussion with my wife allowed me to elucidate further what seems to be the issue here.
What is cheap and boring is that the trope of female body parts cause a sense of horror to men. This is rooted in the common problem that typically society, and men, sexualize the female figure to the extent that when not depicted in a manner pleasing to them, and thus for their benefit, then it is a source of horror.
For those of us who see breasts and vaginas for what they are, then the horror is more the eldritch corruption of the human form in general.
Maybe if men and society can get over that, then maybe we will get more interesting and creative depictions of horror that transcend the typical Giger like approach to the human, female, form.
This really has nothing to do with testosterone. I am not using wargaming to prove anything (I have my mind and academic record for that sorry).
And can we please get beyond worrying about the children. My god, this is a game for adults. Just as GTA is. I am not responsible for other people’s bad parenting. Nor should my hobby be responsible. If it is then lets take aim at GW. After all nothing says family like peddling space Nazis to 12 year olds.
If anything is demeaning here, it is suggesting that ALL women will find such depictions of horror as degrading. Let them have their voice.
But hey, here’s a easy target to score moral points on.
Well if you have your ear to the ground, the ones who are being displayed constantly as “sexy” have issues.
Everyone has issues, yes. What’s your point ?
They sure are pretty for what they are but I wouldn’t call them the best in the world.
The new Malifaux plastics e.g. come with juts as much detail as these for just a fraction of a price.
They are possibly made in the same factory as each other, as I bought this set and the Viktorias boxset for malifaux and the plastic is virtually the same and the sprue layout and style are nearly identical.
This is quite possible as a side by side comparison proves your theory.
Yet somehow Malifaux seems a bit more green/grey and a lot more smoother (almost like it’s waxed) and KD more pale grey and coarse matt.
Now I really want to know where & how those are made.
I’ll say that you are kinda right, but i need to compare them myself, at least they are very close competitors in that regard.
I just think it’s cool that more companies are able to do these high quality, plastic kits.
Well since this has degenerated rather quickly… Boobs.
“extra components”, as @Justin puts it 😀
Both great comments XD
I got mine after you guys showed them on a bs. Love the look of them and the quality. Still haven’t got to painting them though.
Oh yea, to help out with deaddave, breasts.
Titties
Now keep it p.g.. Go with fun bags, or love pillows.
Those sculpts are joy to eyes. Good looking sculpts that offer some fun bags.
As a female (last time I checked, yep still one) I have no problem with these or any others. These are fantasy and make believe. Who really cares? If you like them buy them if you don’t then don’t buy them. It is that easy. Like I tell people when they complain about TV shows, if you don’t like it turn the channel or better yet turn it off. We all have different tastes and not everyone is going to like everything. Is that not why we play these games, because it gives is a chance to be someone else and do things we might not normally do and still go home at the end of the day? Believe me I wish I could look like some of those girls, but I don’t and I am ok with that. So lighten up and have fun, we only get one chance on this blue marble we call home.
Hear hear !
If people stopped being shocked on behalf of others and let them make their own decisions about what they want to buy or see, we wouldn’t be having that talk.
“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away …” I used to run a lot of RPGs, especially very free-form systems like White Wolf and GURPS. Anyway, whereas your typical RPG group is mostly guys, I’ve always been lucky in that most of my groups have been at least half made up of female players. As such, I’ve always had to be a little careful about these kinds of topics in storylines, opponents, NPCs, villains, etc.
It’s been my experience that characters played by male RPGers fall *generally* (I stress the word *generally*) into two categories . . . the hero and the sociopath. In the hero type, even if the character is not a “paladin,” he’s always making the tough decision and standing up for what’s brave and right and heroic, because it’s easier to do so in a game with no real consequence. Same with the sociopath. A lot of guys gave a testosterone power-trip itch that sometimes has to be scratched, and gaming can be a great consequence-free way to exorcise those demons.
It’s like @stvitusdancern says, its about “a chance to be someone else and do things we might not normally do and still go home at the end of the day.”
Characters played by my female players also used to fall into two general categories. First was the “GI Jane-Erin Brockovich” type . . . the tough, hard-nosed, capable, no-nonsense, and highly-respected kick-ass leader. Whether in combat, business, law enforcement, or whatever, these characters commanded respect and would f*** your s*** up if they didn’t get it. The other general type of character they played was, well . . . let’s just say they might dress up like some of these Kingdom Death pinups. 🙂 Same basic mechanic at play, though . . . a chance to run wild in a consequence-free environment and do things they wouldn’t, shouldn’t, or couldn’t do in real life. Of course it relied heavily on the trust in their Storyteller and the other players in the group, but sometimes it seemed to be a real power-trip to let that side out in a safe sandbox environment Just like the “sociopaths” played by my old male gamers, no one would condone that kind of behavior in real life, but these games aren’t about real life and I think that’s they key.
For the record, my girlfriend took it one step further. She had a character with a split personality that would switch back and forth between two personas that could be summarized by these stereotypes. The rest of us never knew which “character” she was bringing to the table! Either way, other characters had to be careful! 🙂
After reading more over just the last couple of years, on different groups and boards ( which I have always avoided) I realize how lucky I have been in my gaming groups. I have been gaming in some form or another from the early 80’s on. I have had male friends play female characters, females play males. Some of the straightest men or women play homosexual, and some of the most openly homosexual play straight. Some, as one friend likes to call himself, “melonin enhanced”, friends play white or Asian, and the reversed. Some went to extremes playing morally bankrupt characters in things like “Kult”. I mixed myself some different, darker flesh tones for painting miniatures to more reflect the diversity that I believe characters would have, at least in my “Fantasy” or “Sci-fi” worlds.
My point being, we all knew it was fantasy for fun. A break from reality, or an attempt to create our own for a little while. The political or sociological implications went out the door. It was for fun and for nothing more or else than that. If a game wasn’t appealing, or a miniature looked like a blob of metal crap, screw it. There are to many other things out there to choose from to waste our time. No one has ever forced anyone to buy or play games like these they didn’t want. No one has ever twisted my arm to watch “reality” TV shows that I think are crap (duck dynasty)(had to get at least one barb in). I sure don’t go running around to different boards to condemn people for doing what I don’t like to see or do. But this seems to be the internet.
These are beautifully done sculpts and good quality products. My hats off to the people that put this together. I think it’s a fairly unique GAME product. If it’s not your thing, move on.
As someone who spend a lot of time with people who deeply self evaluate themselves, i find it Interesting to think about why people play certain characters certain ways.
As for the minis. Who cares? I oogle chicks because I like wearing their clothes, not because I objectify them.
Yeah, ladies have better clothes than us right now -.-
OK girl weighing in hear. I am in no way offended by these. In fact, I think they are gorgeous. It’s nice to see women with curves, and not just the “fun bags”. Also, as someone else posted, these are advertised as Pin-Ups. Now if this was Kingdom Death’s idea of “Madam President” or “Kindergarten Teacher” mini’s, they might earn a grumbled “seriously”, quickly followed by a chuckle. Also, I’m all for the Male Pin Up’s…does Kingdom Death have a suggestion box 😉
I love the technical feat that these miniatures represent, and can appreciate the skill the artists required to sculpt these beautiful figures. I don’t enjoy the ascetics very much and won’t purchase any. But that in no way subtracts from the quality of the art.
I imagine we’re all educated enough about what Kingdom Death do that we’re past the point of rehashing the same conversation over and over again. There may well come a time where Adam pushes the body horror envelope even further and we can all get outraged at the mini/outraged at the outrage all over again. In the meantime, KD aren’t going to stop making minis, people aren’t going to stop buying them, BoW aren’t going to stop covering them, and we get that they’re not to everyone’s taste. If someone would like to post a reasoned opposition to them then I’d love to read it. Perhaps it would be best placed in its own forum thread.
Totally agree. I think in future I know I will be watching for how far the horror goes, or if they keep using tired horror cliches (ERMERGERD!! WIMINS BITS ON A MODEL NOT DERSIGND FOR MER MALE GAZE!!! ERMERGERD CHILDBERTH IS CRAZY SCARY!!!!).
Because of course that is the one critique my wife has about the current KD monsters that have those features. But really that is a commentary on men, society, and how we sexualize women and body parts, while at the same time making disparaging remarks, or saying how gross certain, normal, body functions are.
I’m am keen to see how far the body horror can be pushed and make to look alien and otherworldly, and if they can do that, well more power them.
Damn these images, especially on the BoW landing page. 🙂 I keep logging on to look at other material or reply to other threads, and as I scroll past the features I keep running into these smokin’ hot minis. Five or six minutes later I finally shake myself awake, try to remember what I was doing . . .
