What’s the stuff the paint is on i.e the paper pallette
It looks like a wet palette. Use parchment paper (not wax paper) over a wet sponge or wet paper towel. A little bit of water is absorbed through the parchment and keeps the paint wet so you can extend the working time.
Yeah, it looks like John is using wax paper which has detached from the sponge.

Actually, on this one, the “shininess” of the quickshade would have added something fun to the miniature, making it look more slimy.
