The Basics Of Dropfleet Commander

Here Dave and Darren from Hawk Wargames take you though the basics of Dropfleet Commander with a few sample turns looking at movement, firing and some of the more technical aspects of battling on the tabletop.

We'll be diving into more detail as the weekend progresses but this gets everyone up to speed for their first game.

That did look like fun.
The demo I got at SPIEL this year was just really bloody and I felt there was not much strategy to the game. But now I see that there were a number of mistakes made, that lead to the situations we’ve found us in, such as starting not at the edge but further in, which did not allow our strike carriers to drop to atmosphere before they were taken out.
I still feel that the crippled tables are a bit drastic, the Scourge ships tended to one shot the UCM Frigates (2 damge for 1 hit, then 2 more from the crippled table). Since the explosion radius was also wrong in our demo for frigates (1d6) they just kept taking their budy down with them. So in our game – we saw a single hit from a Scourge ship take out a squadron of UCM frigates.
Granted – with the rules correctly applied this is a lot less likely to happen. I still would like to see the cippled effects to be a little less drastic.
Cheers

You should post up a forum topic on this with your ideal house rules, I’m sure others will be interested in this 🙂

Really useful tutorial. Thanks.

It’s also handy to be able to see the models on the table, and often the ships blend into the mat; so the yellow isn’t all bad…from a distance… 🙂

Ive been lucky enough to have an intro game and really like the rules. The only thing that doesn’t quite sit right for me on intial thoughts was the point at which the sever/critical damage tables kick in. At 50% of hull, it felt like it renders the half the hull value a little redundant, when a good role on those tables can wipe the rest off fairly sharpish. but maybe i just need more games to get used to it. What do others feel?

Anyone else think Justin should have to increase the Banana Fleets signature for painting them bright yellow (joke)

This will be very useful to help me learn so I can teach others.

Nice to see that even the game creator makes a mistake now and again. Now I don’t feel so bad for forgetting a rule or two.

Handy little video to watch. I’m thinking it’s just about time to get a game on the table here.

Nice walk through of the rules.

Lovely paint job. Need to be careful with the weathering though. No one likes a battered banana. 🙂

This game can get killy fast. I imagine you need to be careful how you demo this game. Hammering someone into the floor on their first encounter, watching their fleet chain react and explode one after the other, might turns some new players off.

Good point! I have to keep that in mind, when I get a copy and start trying to drag others into it.

Hilarious demo, mechanics look solid as heck, but you could see how much Dave needs a rest after the launch of this game 😛
