One of the main question, and more fascinating, is: they could avoid to go nuclear ? And they could stop themself before the nuclear holocaust? And if they don’t launch nukes…how long such a conflit would extend?

Well tactical nukes were not strategic weapons for the soviet but rather the operational ……><!

In C&C Red Alert, at least. Or rather, at most 🙂

They actually hade a great plan if they decide to invade sweden. Drop 21 tactical nukes on communication center the first day and 22 the day after. It is brilliant with out our communication hubs we would never be able to mobilise^^.
Chilling but a great exampel of how good soviet operational planing is.

I suspect it wouldn’t have gone nuclear but wouldn’t have lasted very long either.

Was talking with a guy I knew that worked on Nikes in northern Germany in the 80s he told me that he had orders go nuclear if the Soviets captured the locks on the Kiel or Mittleland canals I don’t remember which.

With the assured mutual destruction – I do not think either side would make use of it, but would definitely posture to stop the conflict.

To have WWIII lasting five years seems a bit optimistic in my opinion. I think the war would more or less be decided in less than a month regarding the battle for Europe. As no part can afford to lose, someone would open up a can of instant sunshine.

Not sure they would ever go strategic but surely tactical.

Unfortunately this was figured out in the late 70s 1 month at most.

Ultimately, I think history proves that cooler heads would prevail. At least it wouldn’t occur until one side was desperate.

unless my wife is playing in the game…

Wasn’t the whole scheme for defending West Germany founded on the knowledge that they’d have to use nukes at some point?
