You read that headline right my friends, according to Hollywood Reporter 20th Century Fox plan on bringing Magic the Gathering, the world's most popular trading card game to the cinema!

I mentioned in an article last Summer how Magic the Gathering has a rich and ultimately untapped background to be drawn upon and it will be pretty cool to see this realized on the big screen.

For those of you who don't play the game, the basis for Magic the Gathering is that the players are beings known as Planeswalkers; powerful magic users who are able to walk between the various dimensions, known as planes, and summon various beings from them to do battle.

Apparently, Fox plan for this to become the start of a new film franchise on par with Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings. The series will be overseen by writer-producer Simon Kinberg, who is also responsible for the X-Men and new Fantastic Four franchises.

If I were to guess, I would say that the series will most likely focus around established Planeswalker character Jace Beleren.

Jace Beleren

Jace is often described as being one of the youngest Planeswalkers as well as the most morally ambiguous. This makes him the most interesting and the most likely to have a character arch portrayed in film.

As yet we can't say whether or not the film will be any good. All we can do is hope for the best and get excessively excited by the prospect of watching Planeswalkers battle.

What are your thoughts in regards to the classic card game being made into a movie?
