March 28, 2025 by brennon
Warlord Games co-founder and legend of the wargaming community Paul Sawyer passed away this week. An announcement from his family and Warlord Games came out today following his death after a long battle with brain cancer.
Paul Sawyer
This was the announcement from Warlord Games...
"It is with great regret that we must announce that co-founder of Warlord Games Paul Sawyer passed away on the evening of 27th March 2025, following a long battle with brain cancer.
Paul was a man of enormous character, and he fought tooth and nail to the end, always in good spirits. He was a true friend to us all. That he passed surrounded by the love of his family is a blessing.
We offer our sincerest condolences to Paul's family - his wife Julie, his daughters Catherine & Holly, and his granddaughter Aurora-Rose, whom he was fortunate enough to be able to meet before his passing.
Paul was not a man to be made a fuss of, he'd perhaps not even thank us for writing this short dedication. We believe it would be his wish that we carry on unabated. We shall strive to continue to shape Warlord Games upon the immensely strong foundations he put in place."
A lot of folks in the wargaming community will remember Paul Sawyer's work with Games Workshop and in White Dwarf and others for his time working with Warlord Games, bringing their miniatures and game ranges to life. He certainly was a stalwart of the wargaming community.
As with others in the community, we pass on our condolences to Paul's family and his work colleagues at Warlord Games.
What memories do you have of Paul and how he impacted your wargaming life?

Truly sad day. Paul was a legend, and a genuinely nice person above that.
My memories of Paul are what I read in White Dwarf, like the tale of four gamers and saving enough to have a bacon sarney along with his miniatures that month. Also the iconic battle report of Glazers farm WD222. More recently seeing him on youtube with the Warlord open day Q&A with his friend John Stallard.
As for the impact the inspiration he provided having setup an Enterprise like Warlord games and everything that has brought forward.
A sad day indeed.
Sad news, didnt know the gentleman but have experienced bereavement from cancer. My thoughts and love to his family and friends.
That’s rotten news. Big love to all in the hobby
My condolences to Paul’s family, friends and colleagues at Warlord.
White Dwarf was at its best under Paul’s watch. These were the years when I couldn’t wait to pick up a copy at my FLGS. Tale of Four Gamers, his Beastmen and White Scars armies come to mind first, and of course the humour! I still have all those magazines, and they’re coming out for reading this weekend.
And what an amazing company he created with John Stallard. Black Powder and especially Bolt Action turned a big leaf in my gaming hobby, first non-GW games I got truly obsessed with.
My heart sank when I read the news. A very sad day indeed.
R.I.P. Paul🏅
So sad to hear that Paul has gone to the big wargaming tournament in the sky. No doubt playing British Paras for the rest of eternity. He brought such joy to many of us through all of his contributions to the community and to the wargaming world. RIP big fella.
The greatest gift we can have from our world is to have the chance to have the last good bye with the people we love and care for, I Hope we all get that gift.
My condolences to Paul’s family and friends. Like many who never had the opportunity to even meet him, he was still very much an inspiration and will be missed.
My old online gaming buddy, always the wisest and funniest voice in the chatroom. Only spoke to him a few weeks ago on my birthday. Condolences to all his family and friends.
The white dward crew were like nerd-rock stars when he ran it.
Every issue was worth re-reading. I remember his fascination with the White Scars chapter.
Ride with the Khan, Paul.
The man is a legend. His time steering White Dwarf was a golden era for the hobby. He will be missed.
RIP
