While trapped inside the gastric tunnels of the Enormous Extradimentional Entity, our tasty morsels, er… intrepid explorers might happen across more than the Gastral Tyrant, the Skin Crawlers, the Bone Eaters or the Acid Blobs…the Belly of the Beast also might include such wonderful wildlife as Lung Bats, Bile Spiders, Devoured Dead and Parasitic Tentacles….all otherworld-specific versions of models available in other sets of the game. Since I already have painted up the first two base games, and really do not have any more unpainted versions of these models available, the already painted ones will simply have to do double duty.

But I did find some more of the original base set Tentacles together with the new Flesh Mites, in addition to the Acidic Tentacles from the Forbidden Fortress base game set. I did these super quick and rather sloppily, which shows.  However, with these minis I find I don’t really mind as they are a bit throwaway anyway.

Flesh Mites:

These were zenithal grey on black, and then painted with Reaper Breast Cancer Awareness Pink. On this I used the Citadel washes of Carroburg Crimson, Druuchi Violet and Athonian Camoshade, but also some Reikland Fleshshade. When dry, some details were done with purples and pinks here and there. Black eyes. Base in Citadel Warpstone Glow and Vallejo Vomit.

Maybe I should have gloss varnished these all over? Are mites slimy or shiny?

“You see, their young enter through the ears and wrap themselves around the cerebral cortex. This has the effect of rendering the victim extremely susceptible to suggestion. Later as they grow follows madness and death.”

-Khan, in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Acidic Tentacles

The tentacles 2.0 for the new Forbidden Fortress base set. These tentacles can spit acid. i.e. they have a ranged attack, something the Tentacles in the earlier base sets distinctly lacked,

I chose to paint them like leeches, as that is what they reminded me of more than anything else. Black basecoat, Each of three pairs painted in a different tone by drybrushing with browns, blues, greens. Then the bases with Warpstone Glow and Vallejo Vomit, also vomit on the dripping gunk. Gloss varnish and done.

I am not happy with the bases. The built up part at the bottom ruins the slimy acid pool effect, so I will probably redo the bases to my normal standard with tufts and flockmix instead.

Again, what can a few lead bullets actually do to stop great big monsters such as these? I can imagine a sword or an axe doing some significant damage, but just up to six small bullets? You would need a machine gun with a high rate of fire to do enough damage to stop even one of these…

Giant Tentacles

From both the original base sets, comes the lowly Giant Tentacle. In the original kickstarter an extra set of the minis in red coloured were added, so I have a few extra of some of them. After a bit of digging around in the musty boxes where older unpainted models go to die, I managed to recover a set of these.

I painted them in the same way as the Skin Crawlers, but without any drybrushing. The only extra was painting rings on the suckers, which was rather tedious and chore-like. The early plastics for this game were marred by soft details, and these are no exception. Many of the suckers were …shall we say, lacking in definition. So I had to paint them on. Especially where they bend.

They worked out fine in the end. The models are a bit throwaway, but do represent what they are well with strong silhouettes. I also am thinking maybe I should have glossed these?

Yet again, I am not happy with these bases either. The built up part at the bottom ruins the slimy acid pool effect, so I will probably redo the bases to my normal standard with tufts and flockmix instead.

“Something has crept or been driven out of the dark water under the mountains. There are older and fouler things than orcs in the deep places of the world.”

Gandalf, in The Fellowship of the Ring, JRR Tolkien.
