About the Project

This is my Dark Angels 5th Battle Company from around the 13th Black Crusade era. This means before Primaris. This army started out as me and a friend sharing a Dark Vengeance box set, he took Chaos I took Dark Angels, just thinking of it as a nice simple painting project. That kind of grew out of proportions and I wanted to create something according to the 40k lore. And thus the 5th Battle Company idea was born. It does however include limitations to what I can include in the army, so no Deathwing or Ravenwing. I found this limitation interesting and thus this army is very marine focused. There will be their support vehicles and such. I won't be building the full battle company, just enough to have nice lore friendly army to field in a fun game.

Over the last 2 days I have been nursing the transfers on, first one and then the second over that on half of squad 7 for my Dark Angels. 2 men of that half can’t have transfers on their shoulder pads.

After about an hour of doing the details on my assault squad, came to the conclusion that I should do the weathering after the transfers and before the detailing. 🤦 So now the shoulder pads have a coat of gloss varnish drying on them to prepare them for the transfers.

These models are not part of the 5th Battle Company for obvious reasons, but are still Dark Angels model that I have painted.

Deathwing Terminators.Deathwing Terminators.

The Deathwing terminators were painted up for the Space Hulk challenge and can be found here: https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1281699/

My Ravenwing bikes will be painted up at some point and will most likely end up in my GW project here: https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1311042/

Bases

The base colour on the bases and the sand will be painted Vallejo Model Color Desert Yellow (70.977). The rocks and sandstone bits will be painted Vallejo Model Color Sand Yellow (70.916). They will then receive a drybrush of Vallejo Game Color Bonewhite (72.034).

It will all be shaded with Vallejo Model Wash Desert Dust (76.522) and Citadel Shade Agrax Earthshade (99189953018) will be used on the sandstone carvings on the resin bases.

The rest.

Mechanical bits will be painted with a coat of Vallejo Metal Color Burnt Iron (77.721) and then a drybrush of Vallejo Model Air Steel (71.065) and shaded with Citadel Shade Nuln Oil (99189953017).

Purity seals, the wax will be Vallejo Model Color Carmine Red (70.908) and the hanging scribbled notes will be Vallejo Model Color Beige (70.917) with scribbles of Vallejo Model Color Black Grey (70.862) and then a heavy coat of Vallejo Game Color Sepia Shade (73.200).

And for the rest I can’t say, there are little things on certain model that may be very unique and I will paint them as I feel like. This should give you a general idea of the paints used in this army and I will not keep track of what paints I use for every model.

5th Battle Company Tactical Marine.5th Battle Company Tactical Marine.

Armour

The base armour colour will be Vallejo Game Extra Opaque Heavy BlackGreen (72.147) which will be shaded with Citadel Shade Nuln Oil (99189953017). For the apothecary it will be Vallejo Model Air White Grey (71.119) and the Chaplain will be Vallejo Model Color Black Grey (70.862) both shaded the same.

Trim on the armour will be in Vallejo Game Color Polished Gold (72.055) with some metal bits in Vallejo Metal Color Burnt Iron (77.721) & Vallejo Model Air Steel (71.065).

Most iconography will be done with transfers, however the knee marking will be painted with Vallejo Game Color Bonewhite (72.034)Vallejo Model Color Black Grey (70.862) & Vallejo Game Extra Opaque Heavy BlackGreen (72.147) where required. Markings that are embossed on the model, like most of the Dark Angel shoulder pads will be painted in either Vallejo Model Air White Grey (71.119) or Vallejo Model Color Carmine Red (70.908) where necessary.

The lenses in the helmet will first receive a basecoat of Vallejo Model Air Silver RLM01 (71.063) followed by Vallejo Model Color Transparent Red (70.934) and a gloss varnish at the end.

Robes, Cloth, etc.

The main colour for the robes and such will be Vallejo Model Color Beige (70.917) with some parts Vallejo Model Color Carmine Red (70.908) & Vallejo Game Extra Opaque Heavy BlackGreen (72.147) where required.

Guns

The main body covers for the guns will be Vallejo Model Color Carmine Red (70.908) and the rest will be Vallejo Model Color Gunmetal Grey (70.863).

Trim bits will be Vallejo Game Color Polished Gold (72.055), Grips will be Vallejo Panzer Aces Dark Rubber (70.306) and bullets where visible will be Vallejo Model Color Brass (70.801).

Melta barrels will be painted Vallejo Game Color Bright Bronze (72.057), flamer cowls will be Vallejo Model Color Copper (70.999), front ends of plasma guns and the cowls of lascannons will be painted with Vallejo Model Air Steel (71.065).

They will all be shaded with Citadel Shade Nuln Oil (99189953017).

The plasma coils will be painted with Vallejo Model Air Silver RLM01 (71.063) and then covered with Vallejo Model Color Transparent Blue (70.938). However some older style plasma weapons, of which I know there is only one in the army so far, will get the second coat done with Vallejo Model Color Transparent Green (70.936) instead of the blue. None of the coils will be shaded further and receive a gloss coat at the end.

Melee weapons

Blades on knifes, sword, power weapons etc. will be basecoated with Vallejo Metal Color Burnt Iron (77.721) and receive a drybrush of Vallejo Model Air Steel (71.065).

The main shaft of the weapon, where exposed will just be Vallejo Metal Color Burnt Iron (77.721) and the grips will be Vallejo Model Color Cavalry Brown (70.982). The power coils will be Vallejo Model Color Copper (70.999) and the trim and or decorative bits will be painted with Vallejo Game Color Polished Gold (72.055).

The teeth on chainweapons will be Vallejo Model Color Oily Steel (70.865) and power fists will be painted in the same colours as the armour. Body covers on weapons will be Vallejo Model Color Carmine Red (70.908) where applicable.

Skin, Faces etc.

For this army I will use 2 skin tones, a white one and a black one so to say (no offence meant). For the white I will use a base of Vallejo Game Color Cadnium Skin (72.099) and for the black I will use Vallejo Model Color Chocolate Brown (70.872). Both will be shaded with a 50/50 mix of Citadel Shade Reikland Fleshshade (99189953027) & Vallejo Glaze Medium (70.596).

For eyes I will be really simple and do a dot of Citadel Shade Nuln Oil (99189953017) and for hair I will use whatever I feel is applicable to the model, this can vary so much that writing it down ahead of time is just not doable.

Picking it back up again.

With me having had a fallout with 40k because of Primaris and now I actually planned never to buy any Space Marines ever again, I have made one exception. My Dark Angels 5th Battle Company, A project that I already started and I kind of want to finish before all normal Space Marine stuff is no longer available. I already have most of the infantry and need to buy 2 more squads, but most importantly support vehicles, like Rhinos, Razorbacks and Dreadnoughts.

So far.

So far I have a part of the army built and that’s it. Due to finances and me slowly losing interest in 40k this project is on hold for an undetermined amount of time. I do still want to do this army, but I have so much more going on that this just has to be put on hold. Especially since interests in other games is taking priority and I do have a fully painted 40k army, so I can play anyway.

The army so far.The army so far.

The army started with the Dark Vengeance box which I shared with a friend. I took the Dark Angels and he took the Chaos Space Marines.
