About the Project

I recently was trolling through Facebook Marketplace when I found a copy of the 2014 Space Hulk for sale for $AU 50.00 (UK Pounds 28.00 - $US 37.00 - Bargin !!!) When I contacted the seller he said he had never painted the figures and I immediately started thinking I can use these in both 40K and Space Hulk and raced over to grab them. The thing is, until very recently, I stepped away from GW and although I knew this version had some amazing sculpts I could use in 40K, I didn't realise they were on moulded in bases !!! AGGGHHH !!! I decided - I can cut them off and put them on GW bases .. !!! - Boy this was going to be one hell of a task - NOTE: I am no golden deamon winner or supper kitbasher .. so this is a everyday man's tale of how to make them look "err ok" and !!! - I am not done yet so it might be a project called - Space Hulk - What not to do !! - But here goes.. Day 1 (oh and 2 and 3 - 4 and a bit of 5 - Cutting, clipping, shaving) - Oops no .. day 1 - a trip to GW and a quick splurge on some adeptus mechanicus (in my mind - Space Hulky type bases).. Now back to the wounds .. err I mean cutting of the models (and me a bit) ..

Well I have to say painting the Genestealers has been a lot faster and less fiddly. Mind you I haven’t gone through and picked out all the detail yet.

Here’s the quick low down

Base Coat Black

Pick out body details with GW Altioc Blue

Paint the hands feet and faces GW Genestealer Purple

Dry Brush GW Lucius Lilac

Wash the black parts of the body in GW Naggaroth Nightshade

Wash the whole model in GW Druchii violet

Paint the tongue and eyes white

Paint the tongue in Tamiya clear blue

Paint the eyes in yellow..

Now I am picking out the details and getting the models finished. A bit to go and I will try and grab some shots of the game set up

Cheers to those who have voted and followed along with this

I have to say .. every time I thought it had these guys finished I found something else I missed.

The gemstones were completed in flat black with a highlight of silver and finally a top layer of Tamiya clears.

Batch Painting

These aren’t really batch painting models but the thought crossed my mind a little while back that all the rope, bone, scrolls and gold were going to get a was of Gw’s agax earthshade and all the silver metalics with nuln oil .. so I set out to pick out all the bits. One thing I will say is, it might be just me but by the time I got to the wash stage I still found bits I missed – oh well..

I have pretty much finished all that I was planning on batch painting and washing .. it’s model by model to the finish line from here. Cleaning up armour bits, bringing back the washed parts, getting the things I missed while batching  and putting in the finishing touches

One thing I did do with the agrax is drop a little in each eye socket this time around. The plan being to pick out the highest parts with shining silver and then glaze green 🙂

A few more updates pics before heading into the home stretch – I have to say these models are not for the feint hearted 🙂

A simple to explain but long time to do stage !

I grabbed Army Painter Greedy Gold and proceeded to get around to all of the ornamental bits (and there are a lot of them). I followed this up with picking out all the gun metal parts (pipes, weaponry etc.) .. I started off using GW’s Ironbreaker but it is a thin paint (or at least mine is) and honestly I really didn’t want to paint all of this stuff twice if I could avoid it (Yes I know thin the paint and do two coats, but sometimes with items that are not high detail, one slightly thicker coat will do the job – especially for those of us that have work, family and other commitments :)). Anyway .. I switched to Army Painter Gun Metal and found this to be much better for the task. Following this (just because I had the paint out already) I drybrushed all the bases, next will be picking out all the skulls and scrolls (or whatever they are called) (and there are a lot of them too), lots and lots of time consuming fiddly stuff to get done at this stage, but that is the nature of the models (all being characters with loads of “bits”). This is a great and fun to paint boxed set but not for someone who want’s to smash it out and get it on the table !

Moving on from getting the single miniature finished I started in on the Terminators.

The first thing I realised is I need to do these a little quicker, but the issue with this set is EVERY model is highly detailed character.

As an interesting aside. I remember seeing these guys when they first came out and I was gobsmacked with what GW had done with the Terminators and Genestealers, however, getting some more modern AoS and 40K figures I can see the improvements that have happened since these were made. On the other hand the one thing these models have that I see a little less off these days is the dynamic poses found in this set .. anyway back to the info

Basically I painted these guys in 2 coats of thinned down GW’s Evil Sunz Scarlet followed by a wash of GW’ s Carroburg Crimson and then a very light dry brush of Army Painter Lava Orange .. then I went over the miniatures edge highlighting with the Lava orange to give the edges more definition. The Librarian was painted in GW’s Kantor Blue with a wash of GW’s Drakenhof Nightshade, drybrushed with Gw’s Alitoc Blue and edge highlighed with army painters Electric blue .. Here are the WIP photo’s of where they are up to in this stage 🙂

STEP 15 - Gems and Blood

Getting a little closer to the end of the first figure. I have painted flat back around all the blood drops and gems … then back over these with silver, and finally Tamiya clear red and Tamiya clear blue for the blood drops and gems. … a few more details and washes to go … whew .. lots to paint on these minis ..

Step 14 - Some Highlights and detail

Working on the armour some more – cleaning up with Evil Sunz Scarlet and then highlighting with AP Lava Orange – (was going to use Frie Dragon Bright but it has gone rock hard 🙁 … The blue areas were washed with GW’s Drakenhoth nightshade then re-painted with Kantor Blue – Edge Highlighting on the weapon, shoulder pad and Power Sword with Alitoc Blue. When this dried – I used a very watered down alitoc blue to start the electrical (lightning) on the sword. When dry, this was highlighted with thin lines over the alitoc blue using AP electric blue and then some white to pick out the final highlights of the “lightning”

Step 13 - Next bits

Not sure why I called these steps but I am going to keep rambling – Probably more like updates, but hey, I am a first timer at this project business – oh thanks to all those who have been smashing buttons 🙂 …

I have been working away at this commander for a while .. and the next phase was to start picking out the bits .. so all of the skulls got an coat of Monster Brown (AP) and all of the dangly bits got some greedy gold (also AP). The strings (ropes) that everything is on also got a base coat of oak brown – the skulls and the ropes (f0r want of a better term) then had the edges picked out (rope) and/or highlight if AP Desert yellow.. then the whole thing got a bath in Agrax Earthshade … (whats left of the spilt bottle :/) I also painted all the bloodrops I had blacked out, with AP shining silver for my soon to come quick and easy blood finish. Oh and the eye I filled in white with my usual sneaky trick of the black dot with an artline 200 0.4 permanent marker.

Now the base is dry and I am working through the cape. Always a challenge (especially when you spill your agrax earthshade !! Anyway .. An Agrax Earthshade wash followed up with a reapplication of the Army Painter Skeleton bone and then army painter white on the edges. A quick coat of army painter tanned flesh on the face and finally some black dots in preparation for the blood drops on the bottom of the cape !

Step 11 - Back to the base

While the Skeleton bone and wash was drying I decided to tackle the base.

I don’t usually do the base this soon but to be honest the white base was bothering me (I don’t know why) and maybe I was just a little keen to see if the idea for the bases was going to look any good.

I started with a cheap paint (2 dollar shop) black followed by a coat of Army Painters gum metal then a dry brush of shinning silver. I picked out bits with the green blue red and coppers (in the pics below) and then gave the whole thing a wash in Nuln oil.

The edges of the base were done in a colour I made from Tamiya Nato Black and Royal light grey to lighten it up a little (Nato black was a little too dark for what I wanted)

Step 10 - More Painting

I have decided to go with a white finish on the captains cape, so to this end I have started with 2 coats of watered down Army Painter Skeleton bone and then a wash of P3 Flesh Wash. I like the P3 wash when I want a warmer shade .. it is a little more red / orange than some of the washes and seems to add a little bit of warmth, next up I will paint back up a layer of Skeleton bone before going for a top of Army Painter Matt white. Sometimes I use Tamiya white too because it is very thin and opaque .. and it allows the under colour to come through but for some reason it can dry a little powdery at times too. Worth the experiment though !

Step 9 - Adding Gold and Blue

I decided to start with the Commander to try different ideas .. pretty much going traditional but I did decide to go with dark blue for the shoulder pad, power sword and bolt gun to tie him in a little with the Librarian. Paints used included in the pics

Step 8 - Washing

I decided to go with a crimson wash (see paints below) all over and very liberal – it looked a bit rough when still partly wet (in the pictures below) Ready for the next step .. at the same time as I did these (after the red so as not to pollute the brushes and washes) I painted the librarian in blue (Kantor Blue) and gave him a wash of Drakenhoth nightshade. This got all the primary colours and washes in place.

Step 7 - Painting

Due to my previous poor choice in undercoating, I wanted to make sure I kept the layers thin. To this end I used a base coat of evil suns red watered down. 3 coats (the final one really just picking out the bits I missed) seemed to do the trick. The final of the 3 coats I used, I really watered down (2 parts water to 1 part paint) because I found the paint did not sit into all the very tiny recesses in these models, maybe the undercoat was coming back to haunt me .. not sure. But either way I had good coverage of the red I wanted.

Why did I choose evil suns red?

  1. I like that red 🙂
  2. Seemed like a good idea at the time.
  3. I am not always a fan of painting the exact GW tones – My Stormcast are much more Bronze than their bright gold because I like the weight it adds to the models.
  4. For re-application after wash I always like to go … a barely noticeable tone up and I have Army Painter Pure red which (to my eye at least) looks just a touch lighter. (Giving away upcoming steps :/ )

Step 6.1 - Distraction

With everything undercoated I had to include those plastic blue door bases – it’s all about the immersion I said to my partner as she shook her head and went to watch “Preacher”(the TV series). I grabbed my trusty semi-destroyed dry brush and away I went with some paper towel and Citadel gun metal – or whatever they call it now (Ironbreaker – that’s it !!)

Step 6 - Bringing it all together

Using some very cheap (and in the case of the white, probably too cheap) undercoat, I set about to bring the colours together. The white was a dulux undercoat that seemed to be quite runny and pool in the gaps cause a little detail loss. Ah well onward and upward .. live and learn and all those other quite generic quotes that cover what i really said at the time %&*&ing mother^&*$% cheap a$$ paint !!! .. Anyway, when it dried it seemed to settle a little but did still allow the red to shine through a little .. no matter a few thinned down coats of white and we will be away. Still optimistic for a good finished product .. lesson learned – use the better brand or hobby specific paints !!

Step 5 - Waste not want not !!!!

Given the price per kilo of GW plastic, I couldn’t bring myself to throw it out… My mind was ticking about how I could make this a more ruinous and old looking hulk. I was thinking of adding more to the bases when it struck me that all that cut up plastic looked like broken sheets of metal plating etc. – So I set about to put all of the shavings and cuttings to work to make my bases come alive… I must admit it looked weird all the red and blue plastic, but I was convinced that it would all come together in the undercoat …. watch this space.
