About the Project

I backed the game when the second Kickstarter came out - it never really clicked just how much plastic I was going to receive! I didn't help myself by adding several expansions, some white box minis and extra armour sprues! I've painted quite a few already, but I'm going to try and keep a project log for the new minis I'm about to paint. As of June 2020, I'm calling this project done. Although I have a million survivors to build and paint, it's really the monsters that everyone loves. Having said that - I still have the Sunstalker, Slenderman and Spidicules to build and paint - so I might do a separate project for those if I ever get round to them. I don't get the time to paint I used to, and so any critique or tips are very welcome!

So, the majority of this is again taken with heavy inspiration from @jayadan – You are a legend, Jay!

So, I zenithal primed the mini, leaving the hat off so I could get to the face and eyes more easily.

I then painted the skin in Warcolours Flesh 5. This was given a wash of  GW Thraka Green all over. I used thinned Warcolours Violet 4 as a second wash, focusing more on the deeper recesses of the skin.

Once the washes were dry, I went back in over the raised skin with thinned Flesh 5. I did 4-5 layers, each covering slightly less of the raised area, so the last couple were just on the upper surfaces.

I followed this by painting the trousers (WC Warm Grey 4) coat and hat (WC Cool Grey 4), and the eyes (WC Yellow 2) – I know in the lore his eyes are supposed to be black, but that wouldn’t look good on the mini!

The gallows and skulls were painted Warm Grey 2. The leather and the wood on the gun, were given two coats of WC Brown 4.

The gallows were then given a wash of Nuln oil, followed by Agrax Earthshade. The skulls just got the Agrax and the trousers, hat and coat just got thinned Nuln oil. The coat and hat were then touched up in Cool Grey 4 to tidy up any tide marks or staining.

Once dry, I painted over the trousers with WC Transparent Warm Grey. The Warcolours transparent range are great for laying over a zenithal base, or a primed/washed layer. They shift the colour really well, without affecting the pre-shade already in place.

I used Warcolours Pewter to paint in the metal of the gun, kneepads, beartrap (?) and spikes. These wre then given a wash of Nuln oil, and highlighted with WC Silver.

I highlighted the leather using Graveyard earth, then Vallejo German Camo Pale Brown on the highest edges – I think I need to do this again to make it pop.

Using thinned WC Cool Grey 3, I gave some highlights to the coat and hat. I kept this to the upper surfaces and the topmost edges. I think I may need to repeat this to make it stand out.

I used the same Camo Pale Brown for the rope. this was then washed with Agrax. Once dry I drybrushed again with the Camo Pale Brown.

The skulls were drybrushed GW Bleached Bone, washed in thinned Agrax, and then lightly drybrushed again.

I also did another layer of Agrax over the gallows to darken the wood down a little more.

Finally I painted the severed hand in Valljo Dead Flesh. This was then washed with Thraka Green, then given a very thin coat of WC Transparent purple (which looks more like a magenta). I then toughed this up a 75/25 mix of Vallejo Dead flesh and Cadian flesh, thinned 50/50 with medium.

Out of sight in the pics, I painted the scabbard WC Red 5, and the metal in WC Antique Gold. But that’s for the next update.

So last steps – I added a few thinned layers of Red 5 to the scabbard, and used some pale gold on the scabbard trim. Once dry I used a thinned wash of chestnut ink over the whole thing. I then used just a couple fo thinned layers of red 4 and 3 on the upper edges of the scabbard as mild highlights – I wanted it to stay quite dark. The gold was touched up with some pale gold, and the handle and guard painted in silver, washed black, with silver touched along the upper edges.

I used blue-grey 3 for the hat band, edges and highlighted in blue-grey 2. I didn’t do much work on the band to be fair!

The base was the usual affair – agrellan earth, some sprinkled autumn grass, and some lilac tufts.

I used a couple of layers of Matt Cote to dull and protect the mini. Although, given some of the shine in the pics, I might give it another coat.

The effect is hard to capture on camera!

So, after the gold had settled I decided to paint the sleeves and pantaloons (?) green. Starting with a base of green 5 (Warcolours) I painted the edges and raised areas green 4, then added thinner layers of green 3 and 2. I then gave this a wash of Thraka green (GW). Once dry, I re-touched the edges with Greens 3 and 2. The pics don’t really show the highlights, so I either need to use a camera (rather than the camera on my phone), or get a proper photo booth!

I layered the sword with Celestial Azure (GSW). I needed several coats to get a smooth finish. It’s a subtle colour shift metallic of blue/purple – I’m not sure if I’m I’m going to keep this or go back to a more traditional metal.

I’ve added a little red 5 (WC) to the sword handle and the eyes – I’m probably going to take the eyes up to a bright red at a later stage.

I have also started the base. two layers of flooring cork glued on, based with Dryad bark (GW). I’m thinking of this having a small spring to the front – but that’s to follow!

So, It’s been a little while since my last post – apologies for that!

So, after layering the reflex red/gold, I gave the armour a wash of Agrax Earthshade, because I felt the gold needed a little more depth in the shadows. I then painted the gold back in over the flat areas, leaving the recesses. Once dry I gave some of the edges on the pauldrons / Spaulders a light drybrush of silver to pick out the highest highlights.

I painted the flowers Vallejo Ivory, then them washed with thinned Devlan Mud. I then overbrushed in Ivory and highlighted the edges in War Colours one coat white.I wanted them to stand out a little from the rest of the model. Once all was dry I coated the model with  a gloss varnish. After that was dry I gave the fabric and vines a matte varnish.

Overall I’m pretty pleased with how he looks. Could be a little tidier, but not bad. Just the base to finish now.

Okay – so the base was 2 layers of flooring cork, given a coat of Agrellian Earth (not sure why I bothered since i covered the whole thing!) and drybrushed with Terminatus Stone.

I then used some lavender / purple tufts from Serious Play to add flowers, and some Summer Leaf litter from WWS as the scatter. I did put some Vallejo still water in the largest gap to the front, but it didn’t look right, so I pulled it out and used some flowers there instead. I also added a “creeping vine” by GW. This was painted Olive 4 (Warcolours) and drybrushed Olive 2. I then painted the leaves with Transparent Purple (also Warcolours). I’m not sure if I am going to curl this round the model yet.

The model is not yet glued down, but I’m going to pin and glue him once the base is fully dry – I’ll probably not post anymore on this one as i’m calling it done!

Thanks for the support 🙂

Another big thanks to @Jayadan – another tutorial from a popular video site! Again, I had to tone back some things as my skill is somewhat less than his, but the tutorial was so good.

You’ve gotta love that grin though!

I have to be honest, I used the tutorial on a popular video site, by @jayadan – thanks Jay! I can highly recommend it.

My take is a little less professional, but I’m happy with it.

I’m now working on the base. So far all I have is a cracked cork layer – I’ll add more as I work trough it.

So, finally finished the base for the Gorm. Since so much of it was going to be under the beasts belly and out of site, I kept it quite simple.

I used flooring cork to created a cracked surface. This was primed grey before I painted a heavy layer of Agrellan Earth. Once dry I repeated this in the areas I really wanted to have a broken look.

Once dry I gave the whole surface a heavy over-brush of Graveyard Earth (not sure what the new equivalent is). This was given three washes of Agrax earthshade. Once dry I overbrushed again in Graveyard Earth. This time it was a lighter overbrush, focusing more on the region around the heavy cracking. I then drybrushed the whole base, giving several light passes over the cracked areas and the edges, using Terminatus Stone.

I used another couple of Creeping Vine pieces, snaking from the centre of the main fractures. I used this to try and give a story to the heavy ground break up to break up – the vines breaking through the dry, barren ground.  I moved these around as they dried to ensure that, for my model, the vine was not being trodden on. I added a few spots of flock, and some flowers to give a little colour, then gave the whole thing a matte varnish.

Finally the Gorm was glued in to place. And I’m done.

Big thanks again to @jayadan.

This was a trial of the Greenstuff world Chameleon paints. The model was based in black, then given four layers of the Martian green through the airbrush. I then gave the armour a black/Agrax wash (50/50), before spraying one more martian green layer through the airbrush. I think the effect is subtle, but really quite nice. I edged the armour in gold, and painted the fur in various browns, drybrushed up to bleached bone.

The quality in the detail on these is probably better than my painting shows. The Butcher was a little rushed as I needed him for a campaign, so I may go back and revisit him at a later date.

The Kingsman is quite a static pose, but it’s a joy to paint. This was one of my first attempts at zenithal priming before laying on the paint. I think this is mostly evident on the cloak, where I really had very little work to do!

The Hand I’m a little disappointed with. Mainly it’s the cloak – I thought about using red, but I had used that on the Kingsman and I wanted this to be different. I think I also need to highlight the gold more to really make it stand out. Beautiful model though.

The White Lion will follow – I just need to get some pics.

The Antelope: I think the colour scheme is pretty typical. I don’t think many people are even researching other peoples schemes – the model just seems to lend itself to a partially skinned palette! I mounted the model on the rock to help with balance (the slate is quite weighty compared to the mini) and to give the pin through the leg more depth to grip to. Overall I’m pretty happy with this one.

The Phoenix: This was probably the largest model I had built. It was great fun – apart from the 20-odd tiny hands that need gluing to the wings – what a nightmare!

I had seen some stunning dark, moody schemes, so decided to go completely the other way. It was my first real foray into extensive airbrush use. I’m reasonably happy, but still think I should have achieved a better blend. And maybe I should have used blue to yellow, rather than green to red. The base had two thin layers of cork floor tiling added to give more height. I used filler to smooth out the contours. the flock is by WWS (Summer leaf litter).
