About the Project

A couple of years ago the Squadron got involved in a ww2 wargame at armed forces day, when asked recently if there was anything new they'd like to do of a parade night someone suggested wargames. As such I'm building a couple of forces to introduce them to the game hopefully extending to a full blown campaign.

Post card from the welcome packs at camp Heumensoord from a couple of years ago.

Military teams and civilian participants cross the Nijmegen bridge. If the routes haven’t changed too much this will be towards the end of the first day after coming along the exposed road atop the dyke, they still have 80 miles to go to earn their medals.

The vierdaagse ( 4 days) is a series of road marches centered around Nijmegen, Military teams complete 44kms a day whilst carrying 10kg of dead weight in addition to personal equipment

Finally some progress..

Turn 3

Heavily pinned 1 german section fubar’d and fell back, the Americans placed their first pannel only for a rapid german dash to steal it at the end of the turn.

Unfortunately the game had to end here as we needed to pack up for the night.

Lessons learned

Set up needs to be started much sooner possibly even the night before

I’ll run another game for my senior cadets so they can cascade to the younger guys working in smaller groups to keep everyone focussed

To start with games are going to take time and may require deviation from our standard program of concurrent training

Also those plastic trees need better bases…

scratch building houses, cardboard supplied by the local book shop, sealing it with PVA.scratch building houses, cardboard supplied by the local book shop, sealing it with PVA.

Currently mass producing buildings from cardboard, the plan is to create flat pack able buildings that can be stored easier and easily transported, to this end cardboard is being cut with guillotines, covered in PVA, once dry holes are punched through for pegs (cocktail sticks)  and any windows etc cut out.

next will be using superglue to reinforce the edge’s and to secure the pegs into the edges of the board

whilst painting on the sprue may seem like anathema for most it’s the safest way to move models around various modelling spaces and still make progress without loosing small details (airfix 1/72 kits I’m cursing you still)

The Band of Brothers box set seemed like an ideal starting point, they’re all painted and shaded, just need a matt cote and basing now.
