About the Project

Since getting back into Games Workshop with Space Hulk and now Age of Sigmar I decided (after going through the books) to go with Lions of Sigmar - I liked the darker armour finish and I have never painted an army with Purple. Lastly the Lions of Sigmar have very little in the way of Lore at the moment, save that when they ride down from the heavens on the Storm a mighty roar of a lion cuts through the thunder upon their arrival. As those have seen through the miniature range the lion features quite a lot on armour and accessories so this seemed to fit. Later down the road I might add lions (in place of grifhounds) - without further flapping of the gums - or tapping of the fingers .. here we go !!

Probably one of the most unusual steps I took with these guys (and I was really sweating on it) was the undercoat. I wanted to go with something unique, far darker and warmer than gold. I didn’t want the usual bronzed look so it was off to the hardware store where I discovered….

Dulux Duramax Bright Copper Rose

Now when I pained these they came up looking like I had just started painting a slapped enamel paint on but I persevered with my vision hoping I hadn’t thrown hundreds of dollars down the drain.

The next phase was to put on my shades to shield myself from the high glass finish I had just given this army and get to dulling things down .. I employed GW’s Agrax Earthshade to achieve this

Now I was advised to highlight these guys with a drybrush as I have a LOT of stuff to paint, but in typical me fashion I got out the ol trusty medium and small layer brush (citadel) and began to pick out the edges .. at this point I am about 20 miniatures into the army and I have to say it is the most time consuming part .. but the results (I think anyway) are quite impressive (The effect not the skill – no ego here). So here we are Bright Rose Copper – Agrax Earthshade and an edge highlight of Auric Armour Gold.

Two coats of GW’s Naggaroth night and we have a sufficiently dark purple. I experimented with a lot of purples but I didn’t like the lighter ones .. these guys aren’t royalty or hippies !!! – Not that there is anything wrong with either 🙂

Time to give the hammers some weight. GW Iron Breaker on the hammers, short swords (or big ass daggers if you prefer :)). also on the hammers of the right shoulder pads and lightning bolts on the knees 🙂 That’s it for today wine-oclock and we all know wine and painting can be as bad a combination as wine and facebook or wine and ebay (where did that money go out of my account and why is there a goat on my couch/lounge).

Off to Sydney for a 2 day conference so alas no painting until my return .. For those of you still awake – I will continue 🙂

Cheers
