About the Project

In this project thread I will be posting the campaign maps and battle report (campaign tracking sheets) for the Bolt Action Boot Camp. These are based on the best records I have, apologies if I missed anyone or if made any mistakes. Of course not every game at the Boot Camp was recorded as part of the Operation Crusader campaign.

Research Request - Oasis Force / 29th Indian Brigade

Good afternoon ~

So several people at the recent Bolt Action Boot Camp were asking me to help out with a little spot-research on certain units they were interested in, or units they were playing at the Boot Camp.  Please understand these are not Bolt Action army lists, but “real-life” historical data on the actual units as fielded in North Africa.

The first of these was requested by Michael (@intelligentmistertoad) who asked to learn more about the 29th Indian Brigade / Oasis Force with which he did so well (earning the Desert Rat Award) at the Boot Camp.

Other requests I have on file, and I will get to them in the coming days.

The three-page document is pictured below, and also included as a .pdf for download.

I would encourage other British / Commonwealth players to take a look, especially at Page 03, as it goes into detail on how British / Commonwealth infantry units were actually put together (in summary terms) during this period.

Hope you find it useful!

Sikh / Punjabi Infantry w/ Matildas and Valentines in Historical Bolt Action?

Another person at the boot camp (Charlie from Warlord Games) was asking me for historical background on any Sikh units that might have fought on the same battlefield as British armoured units equipped specifically with Valentines / Matildas.  I think he wants to combine his Matilda IIs and Valentine IIIs with a Sikh force, and was wondering if there was any occasion that actually happened.

Well, I was able to come close.  Damned close.  As in the Sikh Battalion (4th Bn / 11th Sikh Rgt) is actually assigned to the very same brigade (7th Indian Infantry Brigade / 4th Indian Division) to which the Matilda and Valentines of 42nd and 44th RTR / 1st Tank Brigade were attached at the outset of Crusader (18-23 November, 1941).  I can get Charlie to within the same brigade, and 8000 yards on the battlefield.  Like I said, extremely close.

Records include transcripts of wartime military documents, including the actual orders that went out to these actual units for the battle

But for an exact match, go with 4th Battalion / 16th Punjab Regiment.
