About the Project

Last year, I painted Death as the Hogfather from the Discworld series for my mum as a Christmas present. This year, I’ve chosen to tackle Tom Bombadil and Goldberry. I’ll also be trying to make a small scenic base for them, which will be a first for me. So I’ll be learning as I go. In case it all goes pear shaped, they’ll be mounted on 25 mm bases, so I may need to get creative. I’ll be placing the whole thing in a Christmas ornament shaped like a bell jar. I already started to base coat Tom and build the base, but I’m far from complete.

So, at the moment Tom is almost completely base coated and I’ve measured and cut the cardboard disks I’ll be using to make the base.

I’ve added the texture paint to create a bit of a slope already, so I’m not sure if that will come back to bite me later. I’m almost thinking of redoing this part anyway, to get more of a slope happening.

I’ll try to add some flavour to the base. This might be a sign, a few little plants or some little nod to the barrow downs.

So, I didn’t get chance to do much last night, since I’m also trying to paint up the Blackstone Fortress set as well, but the base coats are all done on Tom, and some of the first lot of washes.

I’ll be trying out the Liquitex burnt umber ink on his boots as a wash, so it’ll be interesting to see how that goes.

So, I’ve finished shading and highlighting Tom – painting him has made me realise that I really need practice painting skin.

The Liquitex ink (transparent burnt umber) worked well, but I think I need to experiment a bit to figure out how to turn it into a proper wash.

Next, to start on Goldberry and do some real work on the scenic base!

After a week or so of doing very little, and then the realisation that Xmas was fast approaching, I got back into things and base coated Goldberry.

So, ended up with a nasty bug that stopped me from doing any work on this for almost a week. Time is a bit tighter now, so you’ll have to forgive the lack of a WIP shot.

Night before last, I added paper mache to the base.

While I’m not completely happy with how it turned out, I think it’s somrthing I’ll try out later when I’ve got more time. I think one of my mistakes was to use tissue – while it’s thinner, it needs more layers and seemed a bit delicate during the base coating stage.

last night, I put down some colour on the base and added some “rocks”.

I also finished painting Goldberry. Not as happy with the skin as I could be, but I’m liking how her dress and hair turned out.

So, a spot of illness just before Christmas meant that I didn’t have as much time as I wanted, so the end of this project was rushed and I didn’t get chance to take as many photos as I’d like.

i used a mixture of different static grasses and a pack of grass clumps, along with some green flock to simulate ground cover and some dyed lichen.

This project was fun, and I learned quite a few valuable lessons:

– plan, plan and plan before you start.

– if you’re working to a time limit, you won’t get as much time as you think

– if in doubt, cover it in static grass
