While it doesn’t look it, I got quite a bit done on the wee boys and the big boy today.  They are at the “I really shouldn’t show these stage”, but they will start looking better with a few hours at them tomorrow.

Time flies when you are having fun… this week has dragged and has been a bit of a downer after the excitement of the hobby weekend.  I have tried and succeeded in doing a little bit of Nurgle everyday.

I’ve also caught up with a little more of the weekend’s coverage.  Gerry’s chat with Thomas Mennes was amazing – well worth watching.

“Day 4, Robert?  What kind of crazy 4 day weekends do you have?”   Well, today was a extension of the weekend.  Had a lovely quick chat with OTT crew member Tom as I walked to the train and he was making his way to OTT HQ, then met Ad Mech Daniel at the station and had a great train journey talking about Star Trek and other sci-fi nerdy stuff.

I did have a seriously long nap late this afternoon, then had a look at a few of the 40K projects.  Just, WOW, some amazing stuff done over the weekend on the interwebs.  Really impressed with what people got done.  I also watched the bits of the live stream that I featured in.  Do I really sound like that?  Sorry if I spoke to you with my horrible voice.  I sound more manly and sexy in my head.  At least I didn’t swear.

Day 4 - Everyday I'm Nurglin'

I even did some hobby today, got those models above ready for priming.  More Nurglings and some of the Cultists from Warhammer Conquest.  I am going to try and do a little bit of Nurgle everyday for the foreseeable future.  Even if I only clip out a few models it is still progress.  It will unfortunately mean I will have this song in my head

I’m so shattered but in a good way. I’ll talk hobby first.

Didn’t get my Start Collecting Box finished but I did get three bases of Nurglings painted and based, and I also have finished painting 20 Plague Bearers.  I’ll get photos done over the next couple of days as well as getting them based!  I started to do a bit on my Great Unclean One but I just wasn’t energetic enough to get started.  So rather than push on and make a balls of it, I packed up and was social for a change!

After watching my fellow Slow Grow League German participant Gaz face off against Gerry’s Americans and pull off an amazing win in a game of Flames of War, Justin brought out the Cards Against Humanity. Having never played before I managed to pop my CAH cherry and I honestly haven’t laughed as much in years.  If Fan Cam had of broadcast that, no one would have been able to watch a certain tv show again!

That was then it.  Weekend over.  I’ll write more over the coming days, but I had such a great time.  Really enjoyed myself and actually painted models I am proud off and pleased with.  Thanks to Lloyd and Warren, and the rest of the crew for all the effort they put in to making this such an enjoyable experience.  Thanks also to the other attendees for making it special.  They really were a great bunch and hopefully I have made some new friends who I will play games with further down the line – Gerry and Paul are going to get stomped by my Kings of War Dwarfs when 3rd edition is released!

Yes, I also bought models I don’t need but we can talk about them and whether they ever get painted at a future time!

For Nurgle!

My Day 2

The 40k weekend has created a massive buzz in Coleraine and the town seemed to have organised a big parade in its honour.  There was bands, banners, flegs – lots and lots of flegs – and well dressed men wearing some form of cultist apparel.

So this is how Day 2 began but thankfully I wasn’t diverted from my traditional route to OTT HQ and I actually was FIRST (staff excluded).  You know that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you are first to comment on the Weekender or XLBS… it is 100 times better in real life, so much so my  Nurglings nearly were having a white  sticky paint scheme…

Swiftly moving on… What a day!  Despite a few hangovers everyone (eventually…) piled into the hobby or playing games on that magnificent table. Every time I looked at the table I saw something new and Lloyd’s banners really are something to behold.  Credit were credit is due, it is stunning.

My hobby was productive – Nurglings just need finished off, mostly basing and varnish. Plague Bearers are getting there. I’m “Try Harding” a bit too much for stock infantry but these troops have been bestowed with so many nurgly bits from the Papa (the real Papa, not that fake one in Rome) that they deserve a bit of attention. The third Plague Drone is built but unprimed. Happy with my progress.

Another reason for the try harding is the big, black thing that keeps getting shoved in my face – the microphone!  It is nice when Lloyd, Gerry or any of the other crew say something positive about what you have been doing. What is less comfortable is when they sing Happy Birthday while on camera. It was nice and I still want my birthday kiss from Lloyd but maybe the beard is a turn off for him!

The social side was also great. Moon landings were discussed, Gerry regaled us with some great stories that will never be repeated and many laughs were had. A new paramilitary organisation may also have been form, thanks to Paul. Watch out for the UMA (Unpainted Mini Army) with Gerry as commander in chief!  I’m even getting to bore people about trains!  Sorry if you had to listen to me about that!

Credit to Warren as well. He resisted my battered sausage. It was laid out in all it’s glory but he somehow resisted. The second Johnson brother to turn me down over the weekend 🙁

There are some great paint schemes going on at the weekend.  Some great looking models on show!  It is also nice to see different schemes, the Orange and Purple AdMech by Daniel (I’m terrible with names, sorry if I am wrong), some amazing looking Screamers by one of the Caesar brothers and some of the other lovely demons and nids people have been painting. It really has given me food for thought for future projects.

I have also been very impressed by how well the younger attendees have been painting. The young man doing the Ad Mech has done a really great job as are the Guard, Eldar and Custodes that the other younger guys have been painting.

Oh, I won a prize as well, I might get some more Nurglings or maybe a wee Flames of War box of tanks!  So many shiney things in the store!

No photos this time, I didn’t take any… too busy cutting and glueing, chatting and avoiding cameras but Gerry got me in the end and he is too big to argue with!

So I arrived around 1pm and the members suite was already a hive of activity. Tom soon sorted me out with my goody bag and Justin kindly organised a chair and it was time to hobby!

The table is amazing!  Lots of credit has to go to the team for the skill and effort they have put in.  I could talk all day about it, it is really amazing.  If you do have a chance, visit when it is still up.

Hobby wise I have nearly the Start Collecting box built and primed. One Plague Drone to build.  The legs are a bit of a pain.  They are such nice models though. Today (Saturday) should be a good days painting!

Of course it wasn’t all glueing or cursing when I dropped bits or bits fell off, there are a lot of great people at the event and also me!  Was really nice to meet people who I have interacted with of the site and lots of new people.  If I have forgotten your name today, sorry!

It is also great having Thomas Mennes there.  He has such a nice way with people and you can see his love of the hobby as he has been wandering the Members Suite and taking such a interest in what everyone is doing.  He has also been tempting me with building and painting a Great Unclean One together!   If you have questions don’t be afraid to ask or send them in, he has a great depth of knowledge, not just on converting but on painting as well.

The AirBnB I am staying in over the weekend has two other people staying as well.  Well, didn’t they also turn out to be fellow hobbyists!  So myself, Andy and Marty had a great hobby chat until exhaustion finally caught up around midnight.  Both are really funny and nice guys!

Onwards to glory today and adding to Papa Nurgles putrid horde!  Hurrah!

Why Nurgle and Some Prep Work

First of all, I am going to be one of the physical attendees up at OTT HQ in Coleraine, so watch out for a round bald guy with a wee beard. I’ll also be wearing a black t-shirt.  Looking forward to getting stuck into some hobby and perhaps even playing a game, something I haven’t done in a while.  I will try and do a picture update or two over the weekend if I can steal some wi-fi from somewhere – otherwise you will probably have to wait to Monday.

Why Nurgle?  Well, I have wanted a Chaos 40k army for years, particularly focusing on Nurgle as I do love Papa Nurgle and his infectious ways.    This 40k Weekend seemed the ideal way to start and because I have all the Death Guard models from Warhammer Conquest, I decided to get myself some Nurgle Demon goodies.  Another reason for my choice would be being able to use the Demons in fantasy games as well if I so wish.

Following the brief musical interlude, I have also been doing a little bit of prep work for the weekend as well – mostly to just work out a paint scheme.  I think the way to go with Nurgle Demons is to try and “Contrast” the main skin, then pick out all the little details in normal paints.  Not only should it look good, but it should also be pretty quick to get a putrid pile of Plague Bearers and Nurglings painted up…  I plan on having quite a few of them.

I’ve tried 4 different contrast paints over a Grey Vallejo Primer and I actually quite like them all.  I also think units with different and random skintones will be more in keeping with Nurgle and also think it will look quite “chaotic” on the table.  In my head it is a good idea, but the proof is in the pudding…not that Papa Nurgle’s pudding is that appealing!

Why Nurgle and Some Prep Work

I may also gloss varnish the models after applying the contrast mainly for the reason that is it is much easier to correct a mistake when painting over gloss.  It will also protect the Contrast paints in case I want to put them down on the table before I have them completely finished as well.  I will have to think about it.
