Do Servitors Dream of Electric Priests?

The Adeptus Mechanicus of the Warhammer 40k universe are probably the faction that resonates with me most out of all factions from any IP I have come across to date. They are a big reason why I am still into 40k, and keep coming back no matter where temporary other interest take me.

My regular 40k army was put together pretty quickly for gaming so it’s a simple fast scheme with little care for too many details. I hope over time to gradually ‘upgrade’ the paint jobs.  I haven’t even photographed them all – here are a few:

For the 2019 On Table Top Spring Clean Challenge I reopened the box on one such idea/project and decided to finish it. The result was The False Preacher – converted, painted, and storied.

The False Preacher was ok as a stand-alone piece and it was fun to convert a model to get me started on this journey, but in terms of painting style it wasn’t really juicing me up enough to do more of.
Inspired by some YouTube videos showing oil washing and also Gerry’s ( @avernos )oil wash guides I decided to try some really on the nose Blanchitsu. Let the master lead me into the grim dark so that I may find my own path from there (or something less poncy to that effect!)

I grabbed a spare tech priest dominus sprue and had a play.

I’m actually way happier with the result than I had expected – and it’s given me some ideas of where to go next. Oil washes and pigment powders really are helpful in creating that grim dark feel.

This project hasn’t been as active as originally intended, but in the back burner of my brain, ideas are still simmering and occasionally something pops out.

Over the last year I have been experimenting with oil paint more and more and am sometimes am painting miniatures entirely in oils. This is one such miniature.
I really love the art on the limited edition AdMech codexes and since the 8th Ed one was released have really wanted to paint something with a similar vibe.

That inspiration twixt the right oil paints and this was the result.
