About the Project
Starting early on the Defiance front, waiting and hoping for the Kickstarter completion. This will log everything along with wildfire which I got for the sole reason to get a head start on Defiance. Everything will be backwards compatible with infinity but I am hoping to document everything from painting to playing and then expanding it with some home brew goodness.

Rise of the remotes
Corvus belli is not being my friend just now. They are getting me down with the whole plastics thing. After a bit of ignoring the world they sent samples to youtubers and influencers. What a great decision I thought, still not going to buy what they say. I would rather trust my own eyes and have them in hand. They *chose to send* substandard models. I would save asked for my money back or replacements from CB if I was sent these. You had the perfect opportunity to hand pick your samples… You picked samples with defects and sent these out instead… Needless to say I am now more concerned then ever over the longevity over a rule system and the quality of the products I chose to buy in the future.
This has also had a surprising effect in me painting a self contained game with the best metal models on the market. I have lost my mojo a little. Where once there was joy, now lives despair, uncertainty and unease.
So that above is just an excuse for not getting loads painted. I did however get the remotes painted. I did hear something I think it may have even been on OTT about these just being 3d tokens. ALL OF WARGAMING IS 3D TOKENS!!!! Yes they deserve their sculpts and I do like them. Much more of a pain in the arse to paint than I thought, but I always underestimate how much painting these little guys will take.
Billie - This is Jazz's remote cute little funko foxy thing. Adorable. This took a bit of time with the short blue white blend as well as the red. I do love Scarlett blood from game colour. It is the best of reds.
Gaspar - This is Rahman's remote, not so cute but functional, this is the bot CB wishes to have around to get the plastic out of their arse when the time comes. Again this was very detailed to paint so small but perhaps more colours than in some full sized models.
Duchess - This is Trisha's remote. I don't get the double hat thing but I have seen people in real life wear hats like this so it must be a thing. Lets call this the CB thinking hat they can wear while in the corner and think about what they are doing. Purple is nice to paint it's something I used to enjoy a lot, I will however resist spending money on Aleph just for now. So that’s it for this salty update. Next up will be the Taigha Creatures if I can bring myself to paint them.
More to come, probably.
With great power comes great responsibility. The Heroes
So I started painting this last week. I got over my sulk at Luxumbra. Yes I want it and no I won’t be getting it but I may make my own, now this design is cannon. Don’t know why this pissed me off so much, as an old art lecturer said to me. “Everything is post modern”, there is no longer any original ideas only iterations of the grand narrative. Don’t think about this too much or you will top yourself. But I did find some comfort in this and pressed ahead.
The models are great I have checked over all of them to ensure all the parts and models were present. This took some organising. This may be a board game but in all honesty a board gamer would find this quite difficult and would need to spend ours on learning before cleaning up and assembling wargaming models if never done before.
I did get one miscast. this is my first in 400+ models from CB. I would have complained or moaned but it was a model I have a second cope of I like better. that makes their error rate for me is 0.25 which is better than any other model company I have used. looks to me like a temperature issue on the mould or the metal and CB I’m sure would have replaced the part if I had contacted them. Instead I chose to spend 6 hours painting the model.
Enough pish, here’s the models.
Uma - I dont know why but this model didn't do much for me. I love the Scheme enjoyed painting it when I got started but it's a bit meh. I am hoping she is kick ass in the game though. (I have still only played the demo version twice to see if I had feedback during the KS)
Cadin - I do love myself a Wulven. I repainted his skin 3 times. Under that is a delicately shaded correctly shaded muscle structure. Twice... Id didnt look right. He must have muscles like Conan, it does look better from the top but yeah, correctly painted muscles made him look like a cherub.
Jazz, this model seemed simple but it was actually fun to paint red again. along with some subtle freehand. Still think that pose without the air computer makes them look like they are trying to make someone's head explode from a few meters away.
Qiang - I didn't like this model to start but it grew to be my favourite. Not Surprising being Yu Jing. it was a challnage to paint around the miscast I left the bottom section of the ammo belt in shadow and to 80% of people I'm sure they would never see it unless I pointed it out. This model was painted with 7 colours. one of which was green fluorescent. This is why I love Yu King and yellow. So much drama from such a limited pallet. I would recommend seeing the Lloyd show below. I do like my nmm which is rare for me.
Rahman - Love this guy. Always good to have a doctor. and the uniform give the option to add a lot of texture on the back.
Trisha - Again another lovely model. This one reminds me of my wife with an eyepatch. I do think the uniform could have been more defined in terms of detail but this may have been my ability at seeing the detail. A challenging paint as well. I have never painted any Aleph models before, this is the only one I own outside of cross overs. I almost bought Coldfront from Ebay. But then I realised I have enough to paint.
Agnes - A fond memory from the kick starter as it closed. Everyone was putting in #prayforagnes in the chat. This felt like it was only one of two late additions from CB where they had no art and this was a fan request which they honoured. It's a lovely pilot model. She looks cool and collected and ready to fly. This feels like a milestone. Even though I have 3 remotes, 4 alternate sculpted heroes to do, 27 Shasvastii and the Megalodron to finish. At least I have started. I may batch paint sections of the models each section should be a post here. 16% isn’t that bad a start. And I think I have enough models to proxy a game of defiance if the opportunity comes base I’m finished.
I am also still waiting on infinity LoF bases being delivered as I much prefer having them for playing infinity with the models. I do have plans of adding coloured rings without he stull that came in the box.
Next up is the remotes. If you are painting these I would advise doing it at the same time as the hero’s my pallet has changed two times since some of them were painted making this a bore to try and remember what colours I used.
More to come.
It's been a long time.... Getting from there to here... (Hate UHH sometimes)
So it’s been a while since my last update here. I started strong then got side-tracked when wave one arrived. Partially as the scale of the project hit me. You pretty much get a Combined Army force in the box. I already have a combined force below… AND I have more coming so I better get this up to date. I don’t want to imagine the look on my wife’s face if I say I have backed another Corvus Belli Kickstarter when I have not finished the last one.
My plan here was simple
1. Design bases I still have Starmada to base so I need more bases than what’s needed in the box.
2. Make a set. Yes I do this with all my projects. I like to take photo’s and if I do not have scenery to photograph a model, I make this.
3 Paint like a Motherf***r.
I designed bases like I have shown in other projects I take the game tiles of play mat and then copy them. Meaning I cant sell or distribute the designs but end up with great quick bases. I done about 35 of each base types. Combined Ship and Defiance Ship style. Some are dull but hey some of the models are not exactly exciting (dig at duplicates). I went to print these out and found the screen had died on my 3D printer. Got another newer quicker one and done them again.
Next up I took the Stalker tile from the game a completely done this in 3D using the same method as before. This was difficult as the tile walls are drawn in an odd perspective making sizes and details difficult to gauge. I think I done this ok, but there is a lot of room for improvement. it's more accurate than the Luxumbra effort than launched the day after I completed this part of the project putting me in a little funk. As I didnt want to spend ages printing walls I lastercut the set with one side off So I can take photo's through it. Taking them through an open door may have been cool if I had built the full shuttle...(nope)
I went about painting this. I did rush this as it's not that fun to paint and very detailed. I sort of wish I spent more time on this but it's only a backdrop. It's also very tight in terms of what I can photograph. I did however use my plotter / vinyl cutter to cut out masks. this was great and a time saver as I had already drawn everything out. Is it cheating, no. Is it faster and less frustrating, yes. The vinyl making film I got is great, though it did come from America. No masking film for you Europe.
After I had finished painting I mad the set. The light went really odd because the walls were neutral grey. My camera couldnt cope even if it was not going to be in the cropped image. I I feathered black around the top and it seems to not mess around with the colours of the models after that. Next up will be some models… Very soon. in fact now.
More to come.
Morat Reinforcement Pack Pt2
Pleased with the result in the end. I did enjoy painting more organic creatures with the Hungries. these were a challenge to assemble but the painting was quick and therapeutic. They did remind me of the old Games workshop Hormagaunts which whenever my opponents turned up none ever had arms attached…
Time will tell they are all pinned because of this.
Well I have got beyond Wildfire and the old advanced pack with so a few more O-12 and Shasvastii and that will be me until Defiance arrives. The project will be on hold until then. So hopefully next week those should be done.
More to come.
Morat Reinforcement Pack
So in my impatience for Defiance I went ahead and got the individual parts for the Morat Reinforcement Pack. I didn’t get this through the kick starter but I was swithering on it. So I got the two boxed sets and 3 blisters that gets me the models. This will give me a start should I wish to play these in infinity but I just couldn’t resist some space monkeys.
Overall I was surprised at the sculpts they are a little old. a couple of great ones. Sadly foot on rock was prevalent, meaning some more base work on them to get them to fit in.
The hungeries boxed set was the most surprising. I would have thought Corvus Belli would have chosen simpler models to assemble for Defiance (these were complex with certain parts to cut off for a certain pose. I was also shocked to have to glue on and paint 4 alien penises onto the model, felt like I was getting trolled. This also left me with basing work to do I tried to paint sparks, this didn’t go as planned and looked better as a fire trail. Only simple way of making them fit on a base with roots moulded to small sections of the model
More Shasvastii
Still quite pleased with the bases. Plane enough for my tastes. Thought he thought of now making a base for each model I paint is a little crazy but this probably isn’t much different than sculpting a base for each model I done before, at least in terms of time.
Overall very pleased with the outcome and glad to paint aliens for a change. Much more enjoyable than I expected. IO think this is a start of a combined army force for me. So much so I have ordered the parts to the Morat section for the expansion of Defiance. I needed something to paint and the thought of painting Space monkeys fills my heart with Joy (even though I have paid more for them than through the KS). I also may have the advanced pack, Alpha and beyond Wildfire pack coming. I love these two forces probably for the best as the combined army forces in defiance are substantial.
More to come.
Shasvastii
With lots of home time on my hands I have been cracking on with finishing off wildfire to go with Defiance when it comes. This took my to my first “Alien” Infinity models, the Shasvastii. I have to say I thought the models were meh when looking at them. Contemplated ebay, but it looks like everyone done that and they are quite cheap. After looking at them properly and painting them my opinion has completely changed. Love the look of them and they are very fun to paint. I don’t think I cracked the “proper” scheme with the red I used supposed to be very pink in places. When I went pink I went to far and had to move it back couldn’t get the same balance. Still very pleased with the results.
More O-12
Having to add this over a few updates. Thoughts while I was doing this was how much I like my bases. They do not detract from the models at all. They are not moving over assault courses just trying to cross a section of a room. But they add something. Much like the small lighting effect (which was blue green mixed with matt vanish then ice blue with matt vanish) the more you put on the stronger the colour. Along with the contrast red orange and black chalk pastels fixed with pigment fixer.
So that’s O-12 done I may order the advanced pack and beyond Wildfire though. This will mean that when Defiance gets here I will be able to have a full O-12 force. (and a Shasvastii force).
Overall very pleased and I hope this will cut down on the painting that will be required right away when Defiance hits.
Talking of Shasvastii, they are next. Cant wait but going to not paint today time for a days rest.
More to come.
