About the Project

I didn’t do the spring clean challenge last year but it inspired me to resurrect my Warhammer High Elfs and rebase them into a Kings of War army. I got a 1500pts force done. But haven’t done anything more since then. This year I plan to get them up to a 2000pts force. At least.

So since my army has always been themed on the Chrace region of Ulthuan, I got one of these lion chariots as soon as they were released. That was about 15 years ago. Probably should get it painted!

Dunno why I fully constructed this. How was I going to paint it? Anyway, managed to get one of the crew off, so that will make it a little easier. Dunno why I fully constructed this. How was I going to paint it? Anyway, managed to get one of the crew off, so that will make it a little easier.

Sprayed ArmyPainter: Leather Brown. Then zenithed with Citadel: Wraith Bone.

The lions were painted with Citadel: contrast Skeleton Horde. I thinned it down with contrast medium to make it a bit paler. Then thinned it down even more for the manes.

Then the whole chariot was painted with GoreGrunta Brown. This would have been so much easier if it had been separate from the lions. I have no idea what my plan for painting this was when I glued it together.

Dark Angels Green for clothes and harness. Wyldwood for reins, boots, leather, etc. Blood Angels Red for the helmet plumes. Basilicum Grey as a basecoat for all the armour and weapons that will be silver.

Stormhost silver over the grey on the armour and weapons. Skin is Chadian fleshtone highlighted by mixing in some white.

Final details painted on. Final highlights done. Nuln Oil Gloss over all the metalics. The gloss gives nice black outlines but doesn’t darken the colours as much as regular Nuln Oil.

Based with Scrubland base ready mix from GeekGaming. Some tufts and MiniNatur flowers. Based with Scrubland base ready mix from GeekGaming. Some tufts and MiniNatur flowers.

Another mini I bought as soon as it came out and never got around to painting. Also for some reason I glued the wings in! Obviously I didn’t care about storage or transport. Then I did, and sawed its wings off with the intention of pinning them. Never got around to that either.

So now, a dozen or so years later, it’s time to get it done!

Wings now have pins in them. Sprayed grey the zenithed with Greyseer and white. Skin done with contrast Iyanden yellow. Wings now have pins in them. Sprayed grey the zenithed with Greyseer and white. Skin done with contrast Iyanden yellow.
Scales done with Warp Lightning green, with a bit of Ork Flesh to darken it nearer the spine. Magos purple for the mouth and tongue. Scales done with Warp Lightning green, with a bit of Ork Flesh to darken it nearer the spine. Magos purple for the mouth and tongue.
It’s a ginger! GryphHound orange for the spine. It’s at this point my plans change. ...so the wings are going fiery too. Started with Iyanden Yellow. Then GryphHound. Then Wlyldwood. Waited for the previous layers to dry then added the next colour and feathered the edge to blend it with the contrast medium. Seemed to work okay. Also shaded the spine with wyldwood and dry brushed the tips white then put the yellow over to give the same fiery effect. ...so the wings are going fiery too. Started with Iyanden Yellow. Used washes of cyborg brown thinned with contrast medium to smooth the transitions in the wings and darken them a bit. So i got in from a hard week of nightshifts and sat down to watch the guys hobby progress on XLBS. Thought to myself, i still need to varnish that regiment of archers i painted on my last days off, and its a nice dry day.So i got in from a hard week of nightshifts and sat down to watch the guys hobby progress on XLBS. Lesson of the Day:

Do not try to varnish models when you’re sleep-deprived.

Also, for a better result, use varnish!

So after accidentally spraying my archer regiment with greyseer instead of varnish, I’ve got them finished again. Luckily it was a very light blast I gave them so I was able to just go over the worst bits with contrasts and inks and it seems to have salvaged them.

120pts added to army.

Light dry brush of wraith bone on teeth and claws. Reins painted green and white to match the rest of the army. Used apothecary white contrast over corax white- not sure if I like it- might redo it later. Painted the gemstones (see previous post). Chopped off the base and rebased on a 75mm Titan base. Built it up a bit with scraps of mdf. Blended all the gaps in with superglue and baking soda. Painted it all grey then put some random washes of green yellow and blue in patches. Once that had dried put a black wash over all of it.Chopped off the base and rebased on a 75mm Titan base. Dry brushed all the rocks with corax white. Added basing materials and tufts. Also repainted the saddle a less orangey brown so it stands out from the wings a bit more.
