About the Project
I have properly got the Star Wars bug and so I thought I'd pick up the Obi-Wan Kenobi model from Star Wars: Legion and paint it up!

This Is The Way...Again. But, Finished Now!
Here is the finished look for The Mandalorian, Din Djarin.
Had a lot of fun with this guy and even did the little orange highlights on his gloves which I was reminded about by someone from Twitter!
This Is The Way
As well as working on the team from Rogue One, I also thought it would be fun to venture into the realm of 3D Printing and pick up some of the new miniatures by Dark Fire Designs.
I have obviously been loving The Mandalorian and so thought it would be cool to paint up the hero of the piece and Cobb Vanth “The Marshal” which were printed by Proteus in Wales.
The miniatures came in at around £20 for both of them and once I’d ordered them it too less than a week for them to arrive at my front door.
The details are really awesome and whilst the disintegration rifle feels a little delicate, it has survived my clumsy handling of the miniature, for now.
Cobb Vanth also came with an alternative head option which featured Boba Fett’s helmet but I thought I’d leave that off to make sure you could tell the two apart a little better.
I’m going to start work painting Mando first I think as he’s going to be a little easier. Then, it’s time to begin work on Vanth and get that battered armour looking good…or as good as I can get it!
I am eager to pick up more from Proteus now too. The vast majority of the Dark Fire line is on there, especially the stuff based on the new season of The Mandalorian, so I might end up snapping up more.
In terms of gameplay, I think using Din Djarin might work well as a stand-in for Cassian Andor perhaps with the rules for Boba Fett or Han Solo being good for Cobb Vanth. I shall have a tinker either way and maybe even work out some new rules for them!
Cassian Andor & K-2SO Now Finished!
I saw that Cassian Andor and K-2SO came up as available a couple of weeks ago and so snapped them up as additions to my Rebel force in Star Wars: Legion!
The miniatures were fun to paint and K-2SO was very easy to work with obviously. It was a bit of a pain working in the yellow bars on his joints but I think it came out well.
This then means that I now have Cassian Andor, K2-SO and Jyn Erso all banded together to get stuck into those dastardly Empire dogs!
The scheme for the bases fits in nicely with the rest of the army and makes them applicable to both Endor and Sariff which is good.
I was a little bumped out by having to paint Cassian’s jacket in such a light blue as I wanted something a little more “Space Wolf Grey” but I couldn’t be bothered to wait for one pot of paint to arrive through the ether!
A Holiday Well Spent
I’ve dropped some images down below of all of the stuff I’ve now finished off beyond the heroes for my Rebel force. I got another Core Box all done and dusted during my time off recently…
One of the things I changed was the way I was batch painting the second set of troops (shown in red and white). Instead of doing three types of brown and the khaki I instead worked with just one single brown for most of their outfit which significantly cut down the time it took to paint them.
Another step was to simply wash the miniatures and highlight JUST he faces and hands to make sure they were tabletop ready quickly.
I also finished off both AT-RT Walkers!
I armed one with the laser and the other with a flame thrower but I have every intention of just using them as whatever weapon configuration I want against my friends when playing.
I think I did better with the basing materials as a whole and I now just need to wait for a Cassian and K2-SO plus some Pathfinders to finish off what I want to do right now.
Some Progress On Star Wars: Legion Rebel Troopers
Here is how these Star Wars: Legion Rebels look right now before they get a highlight and brought in line with the rest of the collection!
Another set of Troops to work on AND the walker but then I’ll have done the first half of a Starter Army to use in games.
Painted Heroes From Star Wars: Imperial Assault
Recently via my livestream this week (give me a follow HERE!) I also finished off some more of the characters from Star Wars: Imperial Assault.
I really wasn’t happy with how Gideon turned out, at least from the back, but I think that Fenn and Jyn are both looking good. I wish that I could give them proper bases but I think the grey will work best for these board game miniatures.
I think I went too heavy with the wash on Gideon (left) and I’m not sure that it came out as well as I had hoped. But, I think overall the miniatures look pretty good for board game figures.
One thing I have noticed is that these miniatures are nowhere near as good as the Legion ones in terms of quality (obviously). I am very much looking forward to painting up some Rebels over the coming week.
Recent Work On Darth Vader & Chewbacca!
So, I got stuck into more painting recently and thought I’d show off a bit more of the work for both Imperial Assault & Star Wars: Legion. First up is the Wookiee himself, Chewbacca, whom I painted up as soon as I possibly could…
I tried to be brave and go with some super-light highlights but I just didn’t like how it looked and so went back to the drawing board on the model.
You can hopefully tell the difference in the fur colour from part-to-part but I was happy with the finished result and now the whole crew is together for some Rebel antics.
I also dug out Darth Vader from the Imperial Assault box and painted him up!
These miniatures are not quite as detailed as the later Legion ones and it shows. But, I think I did pretty good with black, a grey drybrush and then Nuln Oil to draw it all together.
I think he looks suitably menacing at the very least. Now, I just have to get to work on all of the other miniatures from Imperial Assault I now have!
A Lot More To Get Through!
I now have all of the Core Box plus Return To Hoth and Twin Shadows to get painted up…plenty of time to spend working at hobby now!
Time to dunk some of the miniatures into a soothing bath of Dettol too…
These Are The Droids You're Looking For
I thought I’d get started on some of the Star Wars: Imperial Assault miniatures with the Spanish set of C3-PO and R2-D2…
I think they turned out quite well AND I went with a grey base here because they are going to be used in the board game.
Jyn Erso Finished!
I have also finished off Jyn Erso, one of the coolest heroes in Star Wars maybe?
Again, an absolutely awesome miniature to paint up and I can’t wait to snap up more from the Star Wars: Legion range.
As I was saying last week, I think this works really nicely for both the sands of Scariff and also Endor too at a glance.
Finished Rebel Trooper Upgrade Expansion
I thought I’d now show off the finished miniatures from the Rebel Trooper Upgrade Expansion for Star Wars: Legion.
I had a lot of fun painting these miniatures and it was cool to do not just the traditional scheme for the Rebels (lots of camo) but also work on alien skintones as well.
Now I just need to drum my fingers and wait until more Star Wars: Legion pops up!
Working On Forest Basing
So, I thought it would also be a good idea to show off the components that make up my basing materials for my Star Wars miniatures. I originally worked up just a bit of traditional grass which is layered over an ashy texture which I’ve had for donkey’s years.
The ashy material is what I use to show ground which is more of a tundra landscape. It also sort of works as ‘sand’ which means that when I come to painting up the miniatures which are more Scariff focused the miniatures will still match up.
I don’t like how miniatures look when they’re just mud and grass so it’s sort of my get-out clause for making woodland/forest bases without having to use it. Also, it must snow on Endor sometime right?
Next up, I also throw on some tufts and I have this wildland collection which is great for adding a bit more height to the bases.
The newest addition to these bases is something which is trying to make things look a bit more woodlandy (certainly a word). This is some forest clump basing materials which I think looks like undergrowth and fallen leaves from the trees above.
I have been using this to make it look a lot like little bushes and ways to show that this is a lush, green planet which they are rushing across.
You can see this on the miniatures for Luke Skywalker and one of the Wookiees that I have finished recently.
It takes a little bit of effort to get down onto the base without it flying everywhere but it’s a versatile bit of kit for just making things pop that little more.
Working On Rebel Trooper Upgrade Expansion Miniatures
I have been playing around with some new miniatures that I picked up from my local gaming store. I couldn’t get my hands on some of the core stuff so I picked up these Rebel Troopers to get a handle on painting their camo and alien skin.
This is the Rebels after their base coats and also a wash over the top with blue and green for their skin plus Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil for the rest of their outfits.
These need a little bit of work here and there with highlights to make them pop but otherwise, it was fun to work on some rebels!
It was painted and finished on my Twitch Livestream every Tuesday and Sunday at because_dragons. Give me a Follow if you fancy hanging out and watching some more of my work over the coming weeks.
Wookiee Warriors WiP
I have been working away on these Wookiee Warriors and they are nearly finished. I need to do a bit more detailing work here and there but otherwise I think they are looking more or less ok!
This was a nice change of pace from painting characters and has got me in the mood to paint up some soldiers and such for the Rebels. I really would like there to be more miniatures available soon…
Han Solo!
I got around to finishing off Han Solo despite the lack of black paint. I do not recommend spraying a bunch of black spray into a lid and trying that – but it kinda worked!
I was going to do the camo on the coat but I couldn’t be bothered to try and get it looking like the design in the movie. I think it still works as it is. Now I just need a gorram Wookiee…
Leia!
I finished off Leia recently as well and I think she looks pretty good. I fucked up the face a little bit and tried to fix it, but it’s not as defined as I would have liked it to be. The pains of trying to do highlighting when you’re a bit tired…
The one thing that I don’t particularly like about these miniatures is the fact that the eyes look a bit like pits into hell – but, they do have a fair bit of definition to them which I like.
Painted Up Luke Skywalker!
So my Star Wars: Legion journey continues and I got Luke Skywalker from eBay today. Yes, he has a mould line…but I have never really bothered cutting them off unless they are obnoxious and he looks fine from a wargaming view haha
I really like the miniature and I am looking forward to getting that Age Of Rebellion Starter Set so I can get stuck into some Rebels.
I was thinking of trying out some contrast paints across the range as a whole but I might go with regular paints and washes instead. I think painting them would be pretty simple as a whole.
Finished Old Ben!
Not much to say here other than I’ve finished up the base and trimmed down the lightsaber to a more manageable level.
Painting Old Obi-Wan Kenobi
As I also got an awesome version of Obi-Wan Kenobi from blinky here in the community I thought it best to dive in and paint up that fellow too. Here is the more-or-less finished version of Old Ben.
The 3D print was really nicely detailed and took the paint well. I went for the big heavy highlighting method that I’ve used on other miniatures to match the Obi-Wan Kenobi that I worked on last week.
This miniature also came with a big bonus, a light-up lightsaber!
Since doing that quick test fit of the lightsaber to check the size, I then snipped that down a bit so it didn’t look quite so big. Now, it matches the size of the lightsaber that my other Obi-Wan has.
I’ll have a fully finished and based version to show off too soon!
The Base Is Finished
So – a little while later, the base is now finished and I think it makes the miniature look much better.
Bit of snow/tundra mixed with grass to mix it up a bit. Considering putting some shrubbery on there but not sure it’s needed. And as always, rim your bases in brown not black haha.
