About the Project

This has been a long time coming. The origins can go back three years ago when I first came up with the idea of Magic and Tech but then failed to carry through with any serious development. It has been only recently in the past 4 months that I really put any serious effort into rule development. My original plan was too wait til I had more done and wait til the Spring Clean Challenge has passed til I created a project page dedicated towards this but that is a week away; plenty of time to take Q&A for those who are curious and until v0.04 is up which contains everything right up to shooting rules as the current v0.03 only contains movement rules. If I get enough interest, I will be happy to put up Magic and Tech v0.03 but until then, I will be happy to put up a few images that I found that helped me get inspired to move this project along.

And it’s time! For once, I am way early and with that; here is V0.14 of Magic and Tech. Unit cards have been updated as well as upgrade cards and new ones have even been added. Rules have been tweaked and adjusted with some new ones implemented. Enjoy.

Had another playtest today and some changes will have to be made again. Mostly to unit stats but I think the mechanics are there; just need some ironing. Expect V0.14 by months end! I hope.

Holy moly! V0.13 is a serious rework of not only the rules but also the unit cards and quick reference sheet!

These changes include:

  • Re-worked rules
  • Added some new rules
  • Resized templates
  • Edited Unit Cards
  • Added many more unit that are available for testing
  • Redone weapon ranges

V0.10 won’t be til sometime in January as I create more cards and finalize the force points and begin creating the Table of Organization and Equipment for Narata, Penar Providence, Cultists, rogue mages and orc insurgents.

I do better if I have a physical model to move around as I prepare for play testing. These are Empress Miniatures from their MODERN US DEAL 1 US1, 2, 3, 4 set. They are acting as a proxy for my Narration Army Infantry Squad. I also made an order to Eureka for their JGSDF minis and it came with a dog. So the dog handler's head is from statuesque miniatures.I do better if I have a physical model to move around as I prepare for play testing. I also made an order to Eureka for their JGSDF minis and it came with a dog. So the dog handler's head is from statuesque miniatures.

These minis were cleaned, sprayed with a gray primer and then sprayed with a Tamiya Olive Drab spray. I think. I should check on that and make the proper edits as all of my work is done at the shop as well as check what color went what for the battle dress uniform and the vests but the brown is Tamiya NATO Brown.

The war dog came after I started painting and the handler was quickly made and I accidentally skipped the green spray. Once they’re done, no one will know anyway.

Magic and Tech V0.09 will be coming along next Saturday so until then.

Well, it is not the update I hoped for but it is still a significant update with rules clarified and new ones added. V0.08 will have rules for mecha and the optional rules would be expanded.
Also added will be two unit cards. A war dog team and a war golem controller. I will try to have this ready for next month. See you then.

Two weeks ago, my dad had passed away and the future for this project now looks bleak. I will do what I can but more of my time is being spent trying to pick up where my left off and I have had little time in touching this project. My own play tests are now on hold indefinitely until things stabilize and I am able to spend more time tackling this project.

That is all I have to say for now.

V0.07 will be in about a months time as I expand the mission creation rules, add in the vehicle;e morale chart, run some rough playtests on a small scale and begin to put together the TO&E chart. This last bit will take perhaps the longest to do as this will cover so many branches of service and so many other choices. In the mean time, please tell me if any of my links have been working and what you like, don’t like about the ruleset so far?

Due to my unexpected bust schedule and the ongoing issues, Magic and Tech V0.06 will be delayed again til hopefully next Friday. I apologize in advance.

I guess it be time to upload more epics of images that have helped brought inspiration to this project.

This was made 6 years ago. This cemented the idea to redo an old story world I had came up with many, many years ago and it was a total mess. I have revisited that world and have made it better and I hope I can share this world with you through story and in miniature form. Hopefully I will have BETA V0.06 done by next Friday. Until then, have a good week.

It is with regret that I must inform you all that V0.06 BETA rules for Magic and Tech will be delayed until at best next Friday as life has gotten bust and I had not the time to work on my rules as much as I wanted.

But with that, how about some pics that helped inspire me to create this project.

As of now, I have no idea just how far I want to go with infantry and powered suits. It is without a doubt that there will be some units that will have a frame; no doubt about it but should I go with full-on powered exo-suits? That is the question.

Another thing I am hopeful to add are Mechanicus to the game. Both humanoid and walker/ multi-legged “spider” types. But such a thing maybe years down the road as I am having a hard enough issue trying to figure out how to raise funds to make the combat witches and infantry but that is another topic for another time. Until then, see ya all next week. I hope.

Inspiration Pics Part 2: Infantry

Infantry will be key for the game. Infantry as of now operate in their fire teams or a whole squad, pending upon national or branch doctrines. Still, the theme of a game is a fantasy setting with a near sci-fi twist so imagine elves but in modern combat gear. That is the sort of picture one can gather with Magic and Tech.

As one might of gathered, a lot of my inspiration comes from manga/ anime artists. Whether this will be the style going forward is unknown. The true goal is to create minis where there will be a male and female bodies in various poses with options for a number of races for heads and tail parts. Whether they be made out of metal or plastic depends on how things go.

As for how they operate in the game; infantry vs infantry can be a drawn out process with movement and terrain modifiers adding or subtracting to a base shooting score using a D10 times the weapons Rate of Fire. I wonder if I should make it very less attractive to fire ATGMs inside of a building by auto-pinning the whole team or anyone in the wall facing? Play testing should be most interesting.

I wasn’t sure I’d get V0.04 which covers everything up to shooting done in time with the week I’ve had. Long story short, I’ve been caring for a sick cat whom died yesterday and this is why this project page has been silent all week.

Still, a promise is a promise and I’ve said I’d be ready with the rules once the spring clean challenge was over as not to interfere with them. Now that is over, now is the time to upload the latest rules.

Hard to believe I had gotten these images commissioned three years ago. My rough idea of what a combat with would look like.

If I had to say, this image here proved to be the crucial moment that I became enthralled with the idea of a combat witch. The original artist is a fan of an anime called Strike Witches and he was creating a fan manga series set in the strike witches world but in the year 1991. I loved the modern aspects of it but felt that Strike Witches, despite I love that show, is also all sorts of wrong. So what to do? Change it!If I had to say, this image here proved to be the crucial moment that I became enthralled with the idea of a combat witch. I built this six years ago, long before I ever thought of the idea of creating my own game with the prospect of minis to go along with it.

I re-entered the wargaming hobby 7 years ago but I didn’t develop my own set of rules til I think 5 years ago with my own Mobile Suit Gundam game which turned out quite well as I still run it at local conventions. This in turn saw me create another set called Rifles To The Front which proved WAY to complex.

Rifles To The Front was borderline simulation as the squads were broken down into their sections and it involved a random activation and spotting and on and on. It did see me enter the awesome realm of 1/72 or 20mm wargaming.

Then I did another fan project for the anime/ visual novel series Muv-Luv which again proved successful. So a few years ago, when I heard that Shinobi 7 was gonna make a Strike Witches game and so far have not which is a total shame, the idea did cause me to worry and then a spark of genius!

Back when I was in middle school, I rediscovered my love of writing after an incident in elementary school that is a tale for another day and wrote my own totally insane collection of all that I loved at the time into a series called Narata. Well, it was WAY too much of a mishmash of so much that I stopped writing but the idea did not leave.

For those that do not know of the Strike Witches series, it is about young girls (WAY TOO YOUNG) using these magically driven devices to battle aliens and lets say the animation is not for everyone. I suspect this is why Shinobi 7 hasn’t done anything yet and with the idea of combat witches who are older and more military aged properly and dressed for battle and my long favorite Narata series floating about in my head, well, it cumulated 3 years ago into me rewriting Narata and I fit into it Combat Witches and even wrote several shorts called the Combat Witch Anthology which is being rewritten as well as writing my rules for Magic and Tech.

They say inspiration comes from taking something that you like and changing it to fit your vision. Well Magic and Tech is no different. Not only is it a more focused world than it was when I was in 7th grade but it contains elements of my favorite things as well that fit in the setting of the game.

Like I said, I have taken what I felt was a great idea but pervertedly executed series and tweaked it to fit my vision. Properly military aged girls who are military trained in the use of their Combat Magical Apparatus and are supported by regular units and same thing around.

When that was established and I began writing my first short, the idea of including other fantasy races came to mind. But that is a topic for a later time.

Since I’ve been spewing on and on, it is time to talk about the Combat Witches in depth.

The idea that I feel why Combat Witches would work instead of regular wizards and ages and such is one: good luck conjuring a spell and defend yourself from a bullet fired by a sniper or an artillery shell or an air strike.

Yes, magic still has its place but technology is more readily available for anyone who isn’t magically gifted. But still, by harnessing magical energy by those who are gifted and using that to enhance speed, strength, sight, etc, Combat Witches are still a highly effective unit on the battlefield.

Combat Witches utilize Combat Magical Apparatuses to fly, move on the ground or move underwater. Pending upon their training before hand or what their magical gifts grants them, combat witches can be used to snipe at long ranges with dual training on how to use their gift of sight and sniper school to make them super snipers to paralyzing entire squads within range. Some even can effect their bullet trajectory to a degree to hit at angles not available to conventional snipers to enhancing their own speed, strength, you name it.

There are also healers as well. They are placed throughout the army to aid medics as a combat witch would eventually run out of energy and would need to rest. Their endurance is depending on their training. Meditation and repetitive use of their powers and how to be efficient in their powers use depends on how long a combat witch can stay active before rest.

Combat Magical Apparatuses are not based on any vehicle/ aircraft/ ship/ sub/ etc. As much as I love the “mecha musume” genre (Gundam girls for example or Kantai or Azur Lane), I am staying as far from that as possible as combat witches are not representative of any ship or plane or even weapon. They are just women who want to serve their country and have the capability to do so in a unique way.

Tomorrow I will discuss the grunts and how they will function in the game.
