About the Project

Mycenaean Hoplite army starting warband. Watching a Weekender one Friday, the indie of the week was Crocodile Games. I realized that I painted one of their miniatures w/o knowing it was their line. I wanted to step out into something historical. So seeing these with the Spartans I thought I would give it a try. Due to supply problems near me I am going to be using some different or off-brand materials to finish these. Let's see how it goes and get the on the table.

I lined up the shields on an old paint stick wrapped with painters tape. You can prop these up at around a 45 or you can hols it in your hand to get a good flat angle for your spray can or airbrush.I lined up the shields on an old paint stick wrapped with painters tape. I wanted to achieve a real bronze/gold look to these shields. So I chose to try the Alclad stuff I had stashed away from my model car days. I used it sparingly in the past for bumpers, trim and some jet exhaust tips. So first step is to put down the micro filler primer. You'll want to follow the directions on how to use Alclad products, but the do have instruction on every bottle. This was sprayed in two coats around 25psi. Next up is the gloss black base. And it is what it says it is. This pic is the day after they were sprayed and completely dry. Two coats to cover and about 25 min between coats. The Alclad Pale Gold was the closest thing I had to bronze. Go with 2 to 3 thin coats at 20 psi with 20min between them. They are looking pretty shiny, I may have to knock them done with a dull cote or wash. So if you do decide to try Alclad things to know are... do not thin anything, they are perfect and ready to go from the bottle. Ventilate, ventilate and ventilate, this stuff is lacquer and its not good for you. Lastly use and old airbrush, not your high dollar fine detail one and clean it using Alclad cleaner or if you do not have or cannot find get some nail polish remover and run that thru your brush. After that rinse several times with water. The Alclad Pale Gold was the closest thing I had to bronze. Go with 2 to 3 thin coats at 20 psi with 20min between them. So being out of primer and trying to find an alternative to my norm, I found a half used can of Tamiya surface primer. It still sprayed good so I gave it a shot. It took 2 & 1/2 coats to cover. The 1/2 coat was spot touch ups that i missed. I was surprised at smoothness of the coat and covered well w/o pooling or runs. If you try this stuff get to some air or ventilation as it stinks pretty bad. I blocked in the first color Flat Red from "V", thinned with acrylic thinner from AK Interactive. Again a pleasant surprise that it thinned the paint well, held the pigment from seperation and did not extend the drying time too much. I was able to go with 2 quick thin coats without stopping over the 12 and obtain acceptable coverage. The only point of note is that the thinner made have brought the flat red up to around a satin finish.

No fancy boxes or packaging, just nicely bagged up and bubble-wrapped. Pretty straight and little clean up needed. Some are full casts while some need the spear arm attached. They come with square bases, not a fan, so I put them on 20mm rounds. Lets hunt down some primer. No fancy boxes or packaging, just nicely bagged up and bubble-wrapped. The figures come with some nice shields, but I purchased these as an option. They are sold individually by Crocodile Games. A little clean up around the edges was needed. I am going to try a true metallic coating/finish on these. The figures come with some nice shields, but I purchased these as an option. They are sold individually by Crocodile Games.
