About the Project

Hi everyone :) I've given up waiting for MB Games (now Hasbro) to release a re-booted version of the classic dungeon crawler boardgame HeroQuest. So, I've decided to make myself one, using modern day minis and terrain pieces. I already have a full classic version, so I should be able to do some nice comparison pics along the way too.

I have incredibly fond memories of HeroQuest from when I was a boy, I can still remember the excitement and anticipation of opening that next door to reveal what lay beyond.

So, when I discovered mini painting 5 or so years ago (late to the party I know), it made me think back to that wonderful time. Sadly my copy of the game had long since been condemned to the car boot sale,  and so I scoured eBay to find a complete and unpainted set to paint up as a project.

When it arrived, all those amazing memories came flooding back and I spent blissful evenings at my kitchen table painting up the classic miniatures before one weekend revealing it to my daughter and inviting her for a game.
She loved it! just as I had done all those years ago and I’m delighted it is still the firm favourite in our house 5 years on.

First step into a new dungeon...

During the past 5 years though, there has been rumours of several companies wanting to produce a new version of the game, with modern minis and scenery, but for reasons too numerous to go into they have all fallen short and it seems it is never going to be.

So, I’ve decided why not do it myself? I’ll find some modern day minis and paint up a new set of HeroQuest as a fun new project and bring some new life back into my favourite game.

Now I’d decided to start this project I was left with one huge and critical question; What minis to use?

They have to be in keeping with the original HeroQuest style but to the higher detail standards we expect from modern day minis.
It didn’t take me long to find the perfect range….

Zealot miniatures were running a Kickstarter for a new range of dungeon crawler minis which would fit the bill perfectly!

I’ve decided to start my new set by painting up an orc as a colour test and to get a feel for what style I want to go for

Setting the tone...

Painting this first orc has been a really useful exercise in helping to decide the tone I want to have for my new HeroQuest set.

The original minis, with their simple almost cartoon designs lent themselves to a brighter more punchy style.

The amazing sculpts by Boris, on the other hand, I feel suit a more subdued and muted approach.
What do you think? Have I found the right tone for the new set?

One of the most iconic minis from the original HeroQuest set was the Chaos Knight. For my new set I’m using corrupted knights from the Zealot range.
Unlike the original set, these new minis come with the option of a few variations to help keep them looking a little different

Following on from the orc tone test, I’ve tried to keep the paint scheme for these knights grim and subdued, but still reminiscent to the classic Chaos Knight look.

Decided to look at upgrading the furniture items that HeroQuest has as well.
Luckily for me (because I’m really lazy) Zealot also have a range of dungeon scenery and furniture pieces that fit the scale I need.

So, here’s the first door alongside the classic version

Next I’ve started painting up some chests to replace the original cardboard version

and the really cool thing about the Zealot minis chests is they come with interchangeable inlays for their contents.
I do feel the need to make a spear trap version too now though 😉

and just to give an idea of how the furniture and the minis work together, here’s a quick group shot

I think this is going to work really well
