Up until recently I was only vaguely aware of Conquest, having seen it mentioned on OTT occasionally. The recent Path of Conquest videos have peaked my interest though and I’d like to be involved in a community event, so I decided to join in. I doubt there is any chance of me getting games in in the coming months so I’ll be treating this purely as a collecting challenge.

I browsed the Conquest website for a bit and tried to pick which faction to go for. They all appealed to some degree. In the end I chose the Dwegom as I have never done a Dwarf-esque army before despite being tempted to from time to time.

I have ordered the Start Playing Set along with a Tempered Sorcerer. The flaming dwarf wizard model just looks too awesome to not have him as my warlord.

I’ve used the Conquest Army Builder to have a go at making my first 600 point list. Here’s a link: https://armybuilder.para-bellum.com/lists/0fe7ac9a-588e-499c-b63b-b38315feeba3

While I wait for the order to arrive I’ll be trying to clear as many other projects off my to finish list as possible and perhaps dive a bit more in to the games lore.

Review of building the first models

So far I’ve built two resin characters (the tempered sorcerer and hold raegh) and 12 plastic infantry (hold thanes).

The resin models are really well detailed and went together very easily.

The plastic models are a different story. The models may be “upscaled” but so are the mold lines and the sprue connection points. It takes quite a while to tidy up the pieces. The models themselves consist of four parts for each body (front, back and sides). There are four sets that go together, A, B, C, and D and it wasn’t immediately apparent from the instructions that this was the case. The heads also come in two parts each and are paired A, B, C, and D. I assumed that head A’s go on body A’s, but found I was not able to do this for the entire set. Again the instructions were not clear so I don’t know if you’re supposed to just swap heads until you get a good fit, or if they were supposed to match by letter but have been miss-labelled on the sprue.

Despite these minor downsides the end models look really good. Their bases do feel a bit small for the stature of the models, but I’ll reserve judgment on that until I field an entire unit in their movement stands.

Hold Warriors

For the colour scheme I have decided to go with predominantly dark, cold, neutral colours. An analogous colour scheme of warm orange, yellow and red help the models pop. In the end I will achieve more contrast in the model using snow bases to contrast with the overall dark models.

The models were all undercoated with grey seer. John’s idea of using basilicanum grey as a preshade looked good so I used it too. Wooden weapon handles were painted wyldwood and leather clothes were painted skeleton horde. Iyanden yellow was used to pick out some metal details, gyph-hound orange was used for the beards and blood angels red was used for knee pads, shoulder plates and details on the shields. Darkoath flesh was used for what little skin is exposed on the models.

Milestone one all painted up

I’ve painted up all of milestone one. I didn’t photograph all the infantry. By the end of this weekend I should have finished basing them so I’ll photograph everything then.

The characters were painted in the same way as the basic infantry, except they got a drybrush layer to add more detail.

The metal was drybrushed necron compound. The wood and leather was drybrushed tyrant skull, and the flesh was drybrushed eldar flesh.

The cape was painted talassar blue and drybrushed etherium blue.

To make the flames really pop I re-base coated those areas wriathbone. Then they were painted iyanden yellow, followed by gryph-houd orange, then blood angels red and a dot of black templar on the tips. Each colour was applied before the previous one dried so they could blend together a bit.

Basing technique

For this project I wanted to try snow bases. Its a basing style I’ve never done before and it should contrast with the dark Dweghom colour scheme nicely.

I started by making my own grass tufts using the technique shown by Gerry in this video: https://www.beastsofwar.com/featured/gerry-can-show-you-how-to-grow-grass/

Once the tufts had dried I touched up all the bases with greyseer. Then I covered them with PVA glue. I put one or two tufts of grass on each base and then dabbed PVA glue on top of the tufts too. Finally I sprinkled them with woodlands scenics snow effect. To begin with I used a sieve, but I found the snow effect wasn’t clumpy so it was easier to not use the sieve so I could use my second hand to move the mini’s around and get better coverage. Full details can be found in another Gerr Can video: https://www.beastsofwar.com/featured/gerry-can-how-to-make-snow-bases/

Plan for milestones 2 and 3

My plans for milestones 2 and 3 are to continue the fire theme by getting flaming beserkers and inferno automata. While I was at it I also bought an ardent kerawegh. In the “let’s play” video there is a cool dragon model, but it looks like it is not available to buy yet. I got the files for a steampunk dragon in the Fireforge patreon earlier this year so I’m printing that off at 50% normal scale.

You can find a link to my list here: https://armybuilder.para-bellum.com/lists/0fe7ac9a-588e-499c-b63b-b38315feeba3

It has overshot 1200 points by quite a bit, but it includes the units I find cool so I’m not too bothered. I’ll focus on balancing the list out in subsequent milestones.

I’ve got all the models assembled and I’m about half way through printing the dragon, so should have them painted up soon. What I really need to do now is find the time to read the Conquest rules!

These models were all done using exactly the same scheme as milestone one. The only additions were using aethermatic blue for the Ardent Kerawegh’s smoke, and that the Inferno Automata bodies were painted using black templar over basilicanum grey.

This is the Steam Dragon from Fireforge. It is part of their Metal Beard range. I printed it off at 50% actual size and it still came out suitably big.

The undercoat was greyseer with a wraithbone zenith. The entire model was then painted basilicanum grey followed by a necron compound drybrush.

The wing membranes were then re-painted with greyseer and then painted with skeleton horde. The stitching was picked out by wyldwood.

The gold areas were picked out with iyanden yellow.

The eyes and mouth were painted with successive layers of iyanden yellowgryph-hound orange and blood angels red to make them look like they are glowing with heat.

The chimney cavities were painted black templar.

Milestone five completed

Another 12 hold warriors completed finished of milestone five. Their bases still need the snow effect but I’ll do that all in one go once milestone six is done.

I know milestone six hasn’t started yet but I only have a single model left and I wanted to complete it.

I believe the Herald of Fire is a unit upgrade. I’m not sure what he does but I couldn’t resist another flaming model.

The characters were painted in the same way as the basic infantry, except they got a drybrush layer to add more detail.

The metal was drybrushed necron compound. The wood and leather was drybrushed tyrant skull, and the flesh was drybrushed eldar flesh.

To make the flames really pop I re-base coated those areas wraithbone. Then they were painted iyanden yellow, followed by gryph-houd orange, then blood angels red and a dot of black templar on the tips. Each colour was applied before the previous one dried so they could blend together a bit.

Finally a quick object source lighting effect was achieved using a praxeti white drybrush followed by a glaze of lamenters yellow.

This has been sat in its box for about a year. I finally got around to painting it and I’m happy with the end result. I painted it using all the same techniques used throughout the army. The only thing I omitted was the snow effects. I can’t imagine there being much snow left in the vicinity after you magically summon up a volcano under your feet.

The phot backdrop was a free insert with a recent White Dwarf.
