About the Project

I have mentioned before on my Chaos All Stars 2018 project my love of Blood Bowl. When I got back into collecting and painting miniatures after a long hiatus, it was one of the first things I decided to start collecting. Initially it was just to fulfil a childhood dream of having the Chaos All Stars, but I am not going to lie, it's gotten a bit out of hand. At current count I have about 11 completed teams, and that's before anything new gets released for Blood Bowl Season 2. This project isn't really going to be a huge painting tutorial, but more just focusing on the different teams I have collected, and where I have picked up some star players etc.

We are kind of working our way back from last team to first with this one, although even that isn’t true as I have an unboxed Nurgle’s Rotters team, anyway… one of the last team’s I bought were the Wood Elves.

Never actually had any Elf team when I used to play this, but I mainly picked these up as I liked some of the random star players that are out there.

So without further ado, here is an almost complete Jodrell “The Cyclone” Freshbreeze!

Still available as a star player in the last edition of BB, Jodrell started life as a classic Elven blitzer – Hockey mask and all – he also sported wonderful French Flag inspired hair. Later versions of him scaled this back to blonde with a blue streak. I however have gone old school and the tricolour is back in action.

Picked this figure up from Cominxninos who do lots of Blood Bowl minis. This one I think is named “Jordell Greenleaf” and is actually from Willy Miniatures.

Great hair, and its a resin mini, so it really holds the detail well. Bit of flashing which tends to be common with a lot of Willy Minis, but I like him.

I believe Freshbreeze doesn’t currently feature in the new Blood Bowl, but if he does make an appearance I cannot see a better mini than this one being thrown out.

The Bright Crusaders

Now, back in the day my Brother painted up the Bright Crusaders to match their elaborate colour scheme. This consisted of half yellow, with the other half being diagonal white and blue stripes.

He used the plastic figures from the 2nd edition box set, and enamel paints, and a sharpened match stick for a brush (we were poor!). Needless to say this didn’t work out great.

Fast forward to now, and you can pick up a Bright Crusader team from Forgeworld, This uses the core human components from the last edition, and some resign bits to make them look different.

Colour scheme has been toned down as well, to a crème with blue socks and nice shiny armour.

I have gone with the Forgeworld scheme in the main. However rather than wash the Rakarth Flesh with Agrax Earthshade as suggested, I went with Seraphim Sepia to make it a bit more yellow. (this will come back to haunt me).

Also, on this thrower, I did his towel blue and white as a throw back to the old uniform.

I am also adding a star player to most of the teams just to make them look fancy. So for the Bright Crusaders I went with Karla Von Kill.

Forgeworld has a figure for her, but I don’t like the Wonder Woman vibes its giving me. The few pieces of art work for Karla depict her with a pony tail, and I wanted that to be the stand out feature on whatever miniature I went with.

In this case SP Minaturas’ Karla Star Player

Remember when I said that Seraphim Sepia choice would come back to haunt me? Yeah you guessed it, I wash Karla with Agrax Earthshade by mistake and her uniform is somewhat darker than the rest of the team.

Not sure what to do about that, I should really look back at my painting notes when there has been such a big gap in-between painting the main team and any additional players!

The Orcland Raiders

One of the big two Orc teams back in the day, if one person had the Gouged Eye, the other had to field the Raiders.

And their big name player (and he really does have a big name) was Grishnak Goblin-Throttler.

In the new BB it seems the Orcland Raiders are now being categorised as Black Orcs, now sure how I feel about that.

Although looking at the size of the fellow I picked up to be Grishnak he could probably pass as a Troll let alone a Black Orc!

This fella is by Meiko Miniatures, and he is huge and weighs a fair bit as well!

In the coming weeks / months, I will be throwing up my pics of the teams I have, with their additional players, will probably even get a few shots of them on all the pitches I have bought as well ha ha.

So, I am not just obsessed with buying and painting all of the teams, I also picked up the star players when time & budget permits!

Got this fella today and spent a bit of time cleaning him and sticking it all together.

As is sometimes the case with ForgeWorld stuff a liberal smearing of green stuff and plastic putty is required to fill in the gaps.

I am pleased with him, and somewhat surprised at how massive it is.

Got a halfling team as well, so I will probably paint him to match those.

Right since I last updated this (Jan 2021).

We have finished:

  • Deeproot Strongbranch
  • My Black Orc Team
  • My Imperial Nobility Team
  • My Halfling Team
  • My Dark Elf Team
  • Gretchen Watcher
  • My Chaos Chosen Team
  • My Lizardman Team
  • My underworld Denizens Team
  • A Troll for my Underworld Denizens
  • An enormous proxy mini for Glart Smashrip which I am going to use as just a fat Skaven for my Underworld Denizens

I will get some pics uploaded either Tomorrow or Friday 9th April.

I have also ordered a Snotling Team and a High Elf Team.

If I hadn’t of bought Warhammer Quest Cursed City I would have picked up a Norse Team as well!

So far I have 24 Teams!

I just need to put the bloody transfers on a lot of them!

However in order to replicate the old style Blood Bowl conferences I would still need to buy / build / paint 8 more teams!

In addition to all of that I also have about 19 pitches and about 12 of the custom dice sets.

I could literally set up my own league and run multiple games at once (Covid Permitting)

I said this project wasn’t going to be much of an attempt at a painting tutorial, but I couldn’t help myself talking a bit about the paint job on this model.

Step 1.

Lots of Brown!!!

Actually, there are lots of colours full stop.

We had Dryad Bark, then layers of baneblade brown and gorthor brown.

The face has a few glazes of Rakarth Flesh just to bring out the detail there.

Birds nest and eggs in his crown. Guliman Flesh and Kislev flesh.

Leaves are jokero orange, reikland flesh shade, and ork flesh contrast with some warpstone glow.

Skeletons dotted about ushabit bone, agrax earthshade, screaming skull.

Mushrooms, mephiston red, agrax earthshade, then layers of wild rider red. I dotted it with white scar.

The Forgeworld picture of this doesn’t do it justice its a wonderful model in person and was a joy to paint.
