About the Project
A friend bought a Bolt Action starter set and I decided to buy an army. Initially I was going British, but as I'm running Achtung Cthulhu and they are headed to the desert at some point I decide to switch to Afrika Korps. It's going to take a while to assemble and paint everything... and I already have my eyes on a few more vehicles.

Camouflage
It’s a sunny day and I have a bit of time… so I got the airbrush out and tried to do some camouflage on the Afrika Korps.
It’s not perfect, but it’s not terrible.
Interlude... The Tiger
The 3d printed Tiger tank arrived and I like it. FDM so obviously not as good as a resin print, but it’s less fragile which is a good.
Some clean up may be required, but I’m not going nuts trying to smooth out every line in the print… that way lies madness.
I was concerned that the turret might be a tight fit and hard to turn, but it’s loose enough that a layer of paint won’t impact operation.
And for scale here is a partially assembled Panther from the Afrika Korps starter.
88mm Base
Attached some card to the mdf base. Should have trimmed that long base bit first though, but I forget and had to do it after. Left the bottom of the cutouts looking a bit ragged because it’s going to get textured at some point.
Slapped a coat of cheap yellow primer and that’s as far as I got as I’ve been assembling a lot of infantry miniatures.
I may be sticking with the Afrika Korps paint job… sort of…
Saw a video of ‘Peachy’ painting up some Bolt Action and he did a Captain America conversion for his army… so…
I’ve got some miniatures from an old game called Incursion… and a box of the core Tannhauser minis (unpainted)… and there are some cool minis by Crooked Dice I’ve seen… and I had a spare german body that I might have glued a skeleton head to…
In summary… my Bolt Action is going to be Weird War Two… not changing the rules… just changing the look of my army and the villains mentioned above are going to be leading the Afrika Korps into battle.
If you’re intertested in the Peachy Tips video…
To Korp, Or Not To Korp... That Is The Question
My Bolt Action opponent is going with a european theatre of war army and I have the Afrika Korps.
So… as I’m only at the priming stage at the moment… I’m thinking of changing the colour scheme accordingly.
I know that there are differences between tropical and european uniforms, but at 28mm scale and with my eyesight I don’t think it’s going to matter.
So if the Korps start to appear with the wrong colour uniform and vehicles…
You know why!
Sorry!
More Troops
Bought a box of Perry Miniatures Afrika Korps and I’m blaming @grantinvanman for that as he suggested it. That takes me up to around 75 troops plus a few from gun crews and weapon crews.
Only built the command sprue so far so see what they were like and I was little disappointed in the base sizes are they are much smaller the Bolt Action.
If I buy any more stuff it will probably be vehicles. An armoured car, possibly a kettenkrad (because they look weird), motorcycle and sidecar, truck… that sort of thing.
May also buy some more artillery as they don’t seem as much of a pain to build to tanks and half-tracks.
Trigger Warning
I know it will probably make some people pop a blood vessel, but I was comparing some airfix 1/72 scale tanks to the Bolt Action Panzer III and they don’t look too bad next to each other… might be a cheap way to bulk up the army.
Basing the 88mm
Used an offcut of MDF that I had lying about as the base for the 88mm gun and drew around the bases of the crew miniatures. The two carrying the ammo box required a long base.
Using the hole cutter attachment of my drill I set to work. Obviously I need to tidy up the holes and the tool I had was a little too large for the bases of Bolt Action, but I’m making a wargame base, but a display model.
Once that’s done I will glue cardboard (comic backing boards are very useful) under it and see about texturing and painting. The gun won’t be glued to the base as it’s easier to store separately (and storage is always a concern), so I will leave that part clear so the weapon lies flat.
The circles might do for bases of something, once they are tidied up.
And I Thought The 88mm Was Fiddly...
Built the Panzer III yesterday… mostly… left it in few pieces to make painting easier.
Lots of options in the build and most of them involved a pin drill which I did use initially… and then gave up when I realised how much I needed to drill.
I’m not a ‘tank person’ and wouldn’t know which version of a Panzer III it was unless someone told me and I’m sure my opponent is equally oblivious and that means all those optional parts are irrelevant.
It’s not for competitive play, just a battle with a friend, so it doesn’t matter.
Pictures will follow when I’ve done some painting.
The 88mm
It was a fiddly little bugger, but the 88mm is built and the metal crew are primed.
As are the Mortar Team and Machine Gun crew.
Also assembled three sprues of the six Afrika Korps, but I’m waiting on the rest until I have the Armies of Germany book which is due this week (hopefully) so that I can plan out my army properly.
Pictures of others to follow, but here’s the 88mm.
Mustering Forces
Afrika Korps starter box has arrived along with a half-track that I added. Dice and Pin Markers were needed too of course, but they don’t need painting.
