About the Project

Digging out my old Lord of the Rings miniatures I cumulated over the last 20 odd years. First I want to make an inventory of what I own and what I'm 'missing'. Then I want to freshen the already painted minis up and get some paint on the rest.

Last weekend I watched the complete trilogy with my wife for the I don’t know how much time, probably about the 40th to 50th time. The story is such a classic and  I think Peter Jackson and his team did a realy good job translating it to the silver screen. I think they are some of the best movies ever made.

Every time I watch the movies I get inspired to do some LotR hobbying. Since the Spring Clean Challenge is still on and I finished my other project I thought it was a good idea to get out all my minis and make an inventory. I put them all in an spreadsheet with the different statuses. This took me about 5 to 6 hours because I also fixed all the bent and broken weapons. Turns out I have 558 minis of which 38 are double charactermodels. I probably going to try and sell these somewhere online. Of the 520 models 255 are painted, but most of them haven’t seen washes or glazes. So the next step will be fixing the old models to my new standards.

Here is an overview of my total collection:

I sorted the minis by faction and will keep a score of how many I have finished.

I started with the smallest faction I own, the Dwarven Holds. Only one model to paint and the rest got a touch up with some washes.

And this is how they turned out. I have put them in front of the gate of Helm’s Deep for a group shot.

Next up are the minis from the Misty Mountains, also kown as the Mines of Moria. Here are some pictures of the starting point. 24 Goblins, one Cave Troll and the dreaded Balrog.

I have painted the 12 Goblins that were just primed, the other 12 got an touch up with some washes and highlights. The Cave Troll and the Balrog got the same treatment, washes and highlights to make them a little bit more lively. After that I gave all the models a new splash of color on the rim of the base with some Dryad Bark.

For the Angmar faction I only have one model: Gulavhar, the Terror of Arnor.

Before:

I gave the model a little purple wash to tone it a bit down, it was very bright. Also some highlights on the claws etc.

After:

The next faction I will update will be the Elven Kingdoms.

As mentioned in my last update I went for the Elven Kingdoms next.

Here are some before shots:

There were 8 models that were only primed, so I painted them in the same colour scheme as the 24 I already had painted. These 24 got a touchup with some washes and a new rim on the base. I now have 12 High Elf Warriors and 24 High Elf Archers.

I also gave Galadriel, Lady of Lothlorien a little touch up.

The second model I haven’t painted yet. I’m not quite sure what the best strategy will be to sell this one. Painted or unpainted?

I made a little bit of progres since my last post. I touched up Arwen and Frodo on horseback fleeing the ringwraiths and I painted up Haldir.

Before:

Arwen and FrodoArwen and Frodo

Haldir had to be cleaned up with some soapy water and the flash had to be removed.

And after.

Arwen and Frodo:

And Haldir:

Only one model to go, Gil-Galad. He is already on my painting desk.

Here’s the starting point of my Forgotten Kingdoms faction.

Some are painted and need a touch up, some are new in box and have to be painted from scratch. I also bought some extra Hobbit Shirrifs, Hobbit Militia and the Hobbits of the Shire.
