Loved the step by step. Now I have an idea of how to do that mountain of mantic terrain that been unpainted in a cupboard for a while now
So, how do you plan to base your kill teams? Use some sector imperialis bases painted to match the boards? Some other pre-mades? Your own scheme? Clear bases so the boards and terrain can “shine” through and not clash with whatever board is used?
In my opinion, if you are only going to use the board and the terrain for it, Sector Imperialis would be perfect. If like me, you are making a kill team for a specific narrative (the end of the Stone Templars in my case) I will be using themed resin bases, failing that I would have made my own theme. But if you want a dynamic looking kill team then I would go with clear acrylic. There is something seriously professional looking about clear bases that appeal to me 🙂
Turned out beautifully! That Double Dusting spray technique is just brilliant, adds so much texture.
Two cans John now. @johnlyons what happened with the fourth can? Great looking terrain by the way
I decided not to use the skeleton bone as the drybrush did the job far better 🙂
Thanks for the great tutorial. Never thought about using spray cans two-handed.
dual wielding aerosols is the new thing all the kids are doing 😛
Looking really good.
What do you use / suggest others use as a protective coat at the end?
The paint, after the wash, is fairly durable as is. But any matt spray will do fine.
And thus he became known as “Toucan John” forevermore… 😉
When spraying the two cans of paint at the same time, is the paint doing a sort of wet-blending where it meets?
No, but what it is doing is giving me an instant finish and letting me change the tone of the piece as i see fit.
Really great job John ! Was very nice to see how you achieved this. 🙂
great work that looks fabulous @johnlyons have you seen used the spray can triggers

or has anyone used/recommend any?
Great tutorial – just what we needed. Super techniques and as usual a top notch result. I’m off to look again at my Imperial terrain and see how it can be brought up to the mark. Thank you.
Cheers John mate, the two can spray idea interesting!
Some time ago I brought a big box of Plastic Gothic terrain for the clubd, semi built then left in box
may dig it out and try your method on that, possible on odd bits till got it right.
Originally going to build big building but now think just goting to to go for T X and L shapes so can make a internal imperial building layout.
the Pegasus models ones though cost about £92 quid for a box now
Been thunking about this, have been making rubble piles on my Knights bases using Attentis Worskshop various size cork bits, may start a mini project on making Rubbles piles to go with the terrain.
A nice simple technique, going to try this on a lot of my terrain that needs painting.
looking forward to my delivery even more now. 🙂 Thanks for the guide. Will post my efforts once i get going.
That looks very good.
The ‘smoke’ / ‘battle damage’ being particularly effective at selling it as a damaged building.
Really well made tutorial John. You have really grown to be the tutorial master over at BoW.
I wasn’t sure about the colours in the first step but with the wash it really tied it together. Two thumbs up!
This is the best painting guide for the new terrain I’ve seen so far! Amazingly simple and effective, John. I particularly like your addition of selected colored paneling on the front of the gate and the inner columns. This will be my guide for my GW terrain project next year doing a cohesive look for the Shadow War Armageddon Mechanicus sector, Kill Team Imperial sector and even a huge selection of older Cities of Death sets dug out of the attic.
