Spartan Take Their Kickstarter to Ancient Greece with New Models

Spartan Games are throwing some minis into the mix of their modular terrain Kickstarter as they bring out new add ons all themed around the classical mythology of ancient Greece.
All of these new creations hark back to the legends of ancient Greece and the epic films and shows they have inspired. I am particularly taken with the skeletal horde, which just need to judder slightly to look like they're stepping out a Harryhausen classic.
Along with these Spartan have a new rule system to help you to recreate the mythical battles and adventures on the tabletop.
Spartan have said that the focus of these rules is to provide players with a simple yet fun set of skirmish rules, applicable to a variety of game time periods and genres, which focus heavily upon the importance of the hero. The idea is that these will let you reenact such epic film moments as Leonidas fighting his way through Persian Immortals or Jason fighting off the skeleton warriors of the dragon's teeth.
Greek mythology is ripe with gaming possibilities and these new rules and minis should help you explore them. This first set is tailored towards the stories of Greece, but no doubt we will soon find ones throwing us into the legends of Egypt, the Norse and maybe even Asia!

Loving some Jason and Argonauts skeletons.
These minis used to be available from Spartan years ago. They talked about doing rules for them but they quietly disappeared off the website when FA and DW were taking off.
I believe these are 40mm figures. Definitely based around epic set-piece scraps!
It’s a shame these are being done as part of the kickstarter because it’s highly unlikely to be funded but these miniatures look very nice. In fact I got a dungeon saga update last night about making your own characters for the game – how cool would a Greek adventuring party be?
Like I say, these miniatures are already done and they used to sell them. There’s nothing stopping them just releasing the minis on their webstore regardless of how the KS does.
I am not sure why this whole KS isn’t working for them. the product looks good, with lots of possible expansions. I backed the project, but I don’t believe it will be successful.
if I could make one comment is that the initial description of the KS was way too shy.
They should have shown way more images, setups, variations in order to create more enthusiasm… hope they ll be more successful with their newly announced Halo franchise.
Its a shame as these models look alright, need to advertise more and come back again with a stronger more thoughtout campaign strategy imho, as in now looks like they are trying to divert the attention away from the main product they are KSing. So people who may be interested in these minis will probably not even view this KS as it is for terrain dungeon pieces.
Wish them all the best though and look forward to seeing them do another one. 🙂
I’ve always wanted to run a fantasy RPG campaign with Greek armies and rules for ancient battles, along with all the critters from Greek mythology. I think I would look elsewhere for monsters, though, if only because of the size of these. Lots of great Cyclops and minotaur figures out there.
Have you tried the Darklands miniatures? They do some great infantry models. Not the sort of models you would batch paint btw, as they are extreamly high quality with amazing detail. Great for hero models! 🙂

Great idea @broadside 🙂 . Bulk troops would come from Victrix, I think. And maybe Warlord.
I’m not quite sure how well they’d mix with these given the scale difference.
Darklands are 28mm, what are the Spartan ones @Redben?

Well I guess the monsters in Darklands could still work then, but I would not use the infantry of normal man style. Maybe the Formiac animal infantry, as they are a little bigger than the men.
I had a similar idea, was toying with using the white wolf Exalted rules with the players as Demi-gods. These are some nice minis that would suit that.
