Soda Pop’s Dragon King Starfire Gets a New Look

Soda Pop Miniatures have released a new special edition sculpt of their classic dungeon boss, the dragon King Starfire.

King Starfire returns with vengeance. Now in possession of the Dragon Horn he has declared himself King of all Dragons.

This new and improved resin dragon comes complete with a new profile card, adventure effect and treasure card, meaning he will bring some new developments to your Super Dungeon Explore adventure.

A new Mini-Boss has also appeared, setting sail from the Clockwork Coast comes the feared Captain R.

Complete with a special Black Spot treasure card, Captain R will make for a terrifying new challenge for your heroes to overcome.

I grabbed a copy when it first came out but have yet to play as the whole rulebook full of errors and restic thing really ticked me off. Still, I should be getting my first game (or two) in next week so we’ll see if it was worth the wait…

@lostegg What “restic thing” is it that you are referring to? The game pieces are made from normal board game plastic. The new expansions are even sold with the models pre-assembled to appeal more to the board game crowd.

@dais – When I ordered my set I was expecting plastic along the lines of GWs but thats not what I got. I assumed that it was an early form of restic but, not being an expert in plastics I may well be wrong.

@redben – I’ve got that thanks though sadly my printer seems to be struggling with it and can only print 3 pages at a time, doh.

Restic is just plastic. Mantic came up with the term as a marketing strategy to differentiate between the two types of plastic they did. The SDE plastic is very different and the plastic in the expansions is different again.

I was meaning that I had expected injection moulded plastic, much better in my opinion to work with than the plastic used in SDE. I am not inexperienced in putting minis together and the dragon in particular was a pain though obviously that is more of a fitting/ design issue.

Restic is injection moulded plastic too. The whole resin-plastic thing is very confusing and I’m pretty sure Mantic have stopped using it in favour of calling the sprues “hard plastic”. The dragon was a pain in the a*** to stick together and some of the heroes were a bit fiddly. I found the material itself to be fine. No warping or mould lines.

With the dragon some of the parts didn’t line up so I don’t know if that was due to warping or the design of the parts. All/ most of my minis had mould lines which were a pain to get rid of.

I thought restic was spin-cast resin. So what’s GWs plastic then? Tis the best material for minis me thinks.

Restic is neither spin cast nor resin lol. This update from Soda Pop’s Relic Knights KS has images of the moulds used for this kind of plastic – http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/coolminiornot/relic-knights/posts/601455. As far as I’m aware the difference is in the type of plastic used rather than the casting process. Presumably different plastics allow for different effects and I would assume this “soft plastic” allows for more detail than the “hard plastic” you’re used to from GW.

I had the same issue with the dragon though not with mould lines.
