TerrainFest 2024 Begins! Build Terrain With OnTableTop & Win A £300 Prize!
October 7, 2024 by crew
Join us this year for an updated three months of wargame terrain-building fun using our Project System! We hope TerrainFest 2024 will inspire and motivate you to elevate the quality of your gaming tables and that by the end of the three months, you won't be playing with shoebox houses and books stuffed under gaming mats!
While many of us dedicate significant time to painting our armies, the landscapes we wage battles on often get overlooked. We hope TerrainFest will ignite your passion for crafting and painting terrain, motivating you to craft epic battlefields that complement your formidable armies!
What Types of Terrain Can You Create?
In short, you're free to create anything you desire for any genre of tabletop game.
We're opening up TerrainFest to all kinds of terrain making. You might opt to craft a plethora of scatter terrain pieces to adorn your gaming board, providing essential cover against incoming fire. Alternatively, you could embark on crafting a complete tabletop landscape teeming with houses, woods, fields, and more. Even if you decide to focus on a single terrain piece and complete it over the month, that's a commendable goal that could become a standout feature during your next tabletop escapade.
We eagerly welcome all forms of terrain-making processes, whether it's assembling off-the-shelf kits, crafting kit-bashed marvels, utilizing 3D printing or laser cutting, or simply engaging in a creative session of piecing together odds and ends with a fresh coat of paint.
Whether it's the tiniest piece of scatter terrain or the grandest castle build, TerrainFest is there for you to get involved in and we eagerly await the inspiration your unique projects will bring!

*sigh* I have zero ideas.
Nada.
Nothing.
Blank.
Create some terrain for the vacuum of space… black terrain in the empty void of space… in the utter darkness… so you can’t see anything.
You were building murder teddies last night, so what about the forest moon of Endor?
Generally a good idea but Endor trees end up being giant stumps and are a PITA to store. Also they have been done to death. Launching a project spanning 3 months needs inspiration. And that is completely non existent with me. But maybe lightning strikes later. Thanks for the suggestion though 🙂
How about a series of smaller builds, rather than one big 3-month project? With the Endor theme, you could always go down the imperial bunker route. Maybe some themed scoreboards for your Blood Bowl? an iconic piece for Frosthaven like a frozen library with books all strewn about or an observatory with a giant telescope?
Either way, I hope you get your mojo back.
Three months is a great step for this one… there’s a chance I might actually get through the one I have in mind! Have fun everyone.
So many ideas, so little time. It’s hard to choose just one theme.
Necromunda it is. TO THE UNDERHECK!
love that this is 3 months now. very happy with that time extension… my terrain entry will involve white powder, does anyone wanna guess what it will be? (an no, its not made by FFG Gerry before you say it!)
Somewhere for your awesome winter Germans to play?
Is it a class A drug manufacturing plant for a Spec Ops game? A rock band hotel room? Or have I got the wrong sort of white powder?
I went to Hurst Arts and plaster. What have I become?
A dealer?
Is it that time of year already?
I have an idea, but it’s not going to win me a £300 prize, so maybe I’ll just do it for myself and not share the results.
I guess I know what you mean? I don’t think I’d win anything with my idea (or skillset), but then again if we all thought of it like that, there wouldn’t be many entries. And what I myself liked last year is that even though most projects aren’t prize winning, they are inspiring!
Valid point.
Hmmmm. Thinking i might have to dig out all the various 40k terrain kits I’ve gotten over the years from the various Hachette partworks…..
As I am (slowly) painting up the two initial armies for Home Raiders, I was tempted to simply take a picture of my messy wargaming room and call it done! BUT, instead I might revisit an idea I had years ago using artist painting boards (available in many different sizes) to create a kind of modular table system.
Let me give that some more thought!
Ooh Yes/No perhaps ?
Questions two:
1) Is it just a single grand prize this time then?
2) Does it need to be a completely new project page or can it be new work added to an existing project? Do I have to post my Carnevale terrain someplace new or can I just keep it with the rest of my Carnevale work?
It is a single prize yes for TerrainFest. It would be ideal if you made a new project with the terrainfest tag as that’s easier for us to look through but if you’ve got an existing project you’re adding to, go for it. Gerry and I will pour through them all anyway.
Guess I gotta step and find time for my little side project. Thanks for the extra motivation.
Shared at local discord channels and invited a few friends in hope they’ll join the fun. Cheers!
