Another great episode as usual
@dignity the way you handle a two-handed sword is very natural. You pick it up with your dominant hand (you pick up virtually everything with your dominant hand) because that is where your most comfortable strength comes from. It is also inefficient and clumsy.
The way to fight with a two-handed sword is to have your “off-hand” high near the guard and your dominant hand low near the pommel. Both arms can apply power during the swing but the bottom hand gives the direction of the strike by pivoting the sword around the pivot-point of the upper hand.
Typically, you can apply greater finesse with your dominant hand so it should be low. 😀
ah now here is where i think you are wrong if I grab a sword I’ll grip it with my left first and the natural position will be for my left to grip higher and have my right or “off hand” to be the hand that is lower dragging and applying that extra pull to the sword 🙂
I agree with @dignity on hand position. When introduced to kendo I was shown that you always place your dominant hand above your non dominant with a small gap between them. This seems to be the recommended position for two handed sword grips. This positioning allowed accurate and controlled strokes. That said, I have no idea how effective a reverse grip style would be as it feels completely strange to me. 😀
@dignity & @spaced2020 We may be talking about different sizes of swords. The katana is a “hand and a half” sword which you draw with your dominant hand, and your off hand goes low and guides the direction of the blade.
A Two handed Claymore type sword, like the character had, is three times bigger and three time heavier. That will change the weight and inertia dynamics of fighting effectively with it.
The claymore is more “direct” and brutal than the katana and is handled in a different manner.
@enginseer – Well you may be right there as I have no knowledge about claymore style great swords apart from using them in RPG’s 😀 😀
The 4ground guys high jacked the the show 🙂 That is ok as what that had to say was very interesting. Definitely something to keep an eye on as it looks very interesting. If their miniatures are half as good as their buildings they will be great.
PS no interest in GKR if drawn please redraw
The legends of fabled realms has me very interested, I’m seeing new mechanics (if i’m wrong please point them out) and they feel like they build to the narrative of how a battle would play out 🙂
I love the look of the GKR robots and the gameplay seems pretty swish. However my gaming budget is severely limited, so I had to let this Kickstarter pass.
The GW dwarf balloons are vey nice, reminds of models I’ve scratch built in the past.
Justin, you kept mentioning that “A Song of Ice & Fire” was going to trip people up because the books are called A Song of Fire & Ice… but they’re not:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Song_of_Ice_and_Fire
Just name it Thrones and Games and be done with it.
this was a brain fart moment for me 🙂 I’ve always called them fire and ice 🙂
Great weekender.
Already seen the Frostgrave Facebook page alive with images of the The Legends Of Fabled Realms miniatures. I’m sure that some of them loved the sound of the rules and the idea of narrative heavy rules with character and crew development, but many were loving the idea of fielding these minis in Frostgrave warbands. Really characterful looking game and some fun dynamics described. I hope that with all that quality they can still find a way to make it affordable. 4Ground make the best buildings, but I am usually gaming on a tight budget and only buy the occasional item. (Quality isn’t cheap and we shouldn’t expect it to be I guess)
I saw Uncle Atom from YouTube’s Tabletop Minions was showing his efforts at painting up one of the painting pledge heavies from this Heavy Hitters game. It seems like a really family friendly game because you’re destroying buildings rather than killing people.
It’s a great time to be a gamer.
It’s a shame the Test of Honour game hasn’t had a lot of love on the site. (I might be ‘gaming on a budget’ but I am still on the Army Painter and RuneWars weekend and suffering from shiny syndrome with new games – I never pretended to be consistent. 🙂
I dived in and got the core set just on the basis of the occasional video teasers and overview vids that Warlord Games were sharing. I hope we end up having a lets play and some fun as the general release comes around.
Those airships are superb, not really sure about the rest if the faction though…. 4ground rule set looks nteresting….. the evil faction looks a lot like the vampires from the Necroscope series by Brian Lumley….
I can not wait to see more of Shadow War: Armageddon. I loved Necromunda and am hoping that this is just as good a game. Time to drag out the old Van Saar gang and try this out.
Those 4Grounds minis look like Frostgrave ones which is no bad thing
If you’ve got 4Ground in, I want to see a Stoic Arms sitting in the middle of the table – all you had was bits of paper!
Solo play rules are something I think are really useful and make the game far more accessible vs playing both sides yourself. I really like this in Mars Attacks and found that Silver Tower also works well here – not so sure about the GM thing in Hammerhal – I may just bin Hammerhal’s rules and use the Silver Tower ones,
Looks great! More mechs is a good thing.
Really loving the Fantasy Realms stuff.. that is just great!!! Also.. the GW stuff is actually intriguing… I never did play Necromunda (but pretty much played most other specialist games) and I am curious about painting up a small # of 40K models for use in a nice little skirmish game… there is something about a good beer and pretzels version of 40K that is a nice break from some more serious and involved games like Infinity …
The Legends of Fabled Realms is actually looking quite good.
a great show that new 4ground game sounds fantastic guys.
I have to say I’m surprised! Before watching this video I had next to no interest in Fabled Realms. But now I’m very interested! 4Ground make beautiful terrain, but I kind of assumed it’d be hard for them to turn their hands to making a game that’s just as good. I felt myself being gradually won over by their enthusiasm watching this. The renders look great, the art is nicely different/retro/visceral, the game mechanics sound interesting and the excited and knowledgable way the guys spoke about the setting made it seem like it’ll all hang together really well. Great job.
And I love everything GW is doing at the moment – it’s like when Scrooge goes nice at the end of A Christmas Carol! Loved Necromunda back in the day, but always fancied using the normal 40k armies with it, so Shadow War Armageddon is the thing I’m most excited about.
And that Song of Ice and Fire thing as well? Very interesting and expensive times ahead.
Hoping there’ll be some way of having/using gangers in the new not-necromunda armageddon skirm game. Official rules I mean with……………new minis??!!!! 😉
I DON’T NEED ANOTHER GAME!!! STOP PLEASE!!! 🙂
GKR FTW…. what the heck…. Hi my name is Ken and I am a Gaming ADDICT!!!!! that is all
Weta really spread those demo kits of GKR around! I can’t go to any gaming channels (and even non-gaming channels like Tested) without seeing them! Nice to see a big multimedia company spreading the love around.
Great to see the 4Ground guys, the minis look great, will check up on it…
Oooooooh! That Fabled Realms game looks and sounds awesome! Might even drag me into fantasy gaming! More about the game elsewhere you say? I will investigate.
ok, a lot to say here
when is the legends of fabled realms miniture line coming out?
I like the look of the minitures
and can’t wait for a new version of mordhiem to be realsed for age of sigmar
Happy Weekend to all.
Great show guys.
Can’t wait to see more of what the 4Ground guys have coming with their game. It sounds amazing.
Great weekender! And what a totally awesome price. I backed GKR (the unpainted version) the day it went live.
As for the steampunk dwarves…I don’t think I’m gonna go make an entire army, but I’m definitly getting a ship or two to paint.
