Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War III Announced!

Well they went ahead and did it! Dawn Of War III - the sequel to one of the biggest Warhammer 40,000 games out there is now on the cards and you can view the trailer for it above.
The game will come with three separate campaigns focusing on the Space Marines, Eldar and Orks of Games Workshop's Sci-Fi universe.
Gameplay - What Do We Know?
As well as that it seems like they are promising some rather titanic battles with massive Eldar Wraithknight and Imperial Knights clashing. I can't wait to see how this plays out on screen.
According to sources the game will be bringing back some big armies and more to help make for an interesting transition into a new generation. Here's what we know thanks to PC Gamer.
- Big Armies - The larger forces of Dawn of War I return featuring an array of interesting options for your army.
- Base Building - Following in the footsteps of larger armies we also have the return of Base Building as an element of gameplay. Power Generators and Requisition Points will still be a thing but you'll have somewhere to protect this time around.
- Elite Troops - In keeping with some of the lessons learned from Dawn of War II they have kept the levelling up of elite units. This will mean that you can specialise 'MOBA' style into a particular way of playing. While the regular line troops are dying in droves the elite units will be focusing on those objectives.
- Big Guns - As we know the Imperial Knight and Wraithknight are going to be making an appearance. These are massive units that deal out a sickening amount of damage to the opponent. They are looking impressive.
- Space Marines Get A BIGGER Gun - The Space Marines have access to an Orbital Gun which will rake across the ground turning any enemy you touch to ash. I'm sure the other races will have their super weapons too.
- Cover Returns - The cover mechanic also returns but in a simpler style allowing you to hop into it and keep your units alive.
Not bad right?
The Blood Angels are also returning and it will be fun to see where their story goes.

Superb. We can't wait for this one.

Dow was one of the greatest rts of it’s time, dow2 was meh. I’m going to stay cynical, that way it can only be a pleasant surprise.
Wow, GW is really bring out all the stops, trying to reinvent themselves/recapture the magic. I think this one of the smartest things they can do. Dawn of War is basically an advertisement for them.
Blood Ravens all the way through all three Dawn of War, love the continuity.
It needs to go to back to the roots. I still play DoW to this day. DoW2 collects dust.
I think that is the plan.

From what I understand, the person responsible for the design decisions that gave us the reduce scale and scope of DoW2 left Relic and went to work on Blizzards’s Starcraft II. If that’s true (been a few years since that kerfuffle) I do wonder if he was a little more attached to the Starcraft, micro-heavy, small scale type RTS than what DoW was supposed to be. Just when I was contemplating shifting over to Novamarines after years of silence on the Blood Raven’s front. (plus, quartered schemes are fun).
But no. Red and Bone to the last.
I’m not too sure if the return of base building is a good thing, but I do like that it’s not as skirmish focussed as the previous one was.
Too bad it’s a pre-rendered trailer and not in-game graphics.
It’s good to be a computer war gamer these days.

Regardless of how the game turns out, that was an absolutely stunning trailer.
the trailers / intro movies for Dawn of War have always been stunning.
I think we can thank GW for that though.
DOW 2 along with Space Marine were the best two adaptions of the space marine lore to a playable game. Now this, this is the worst trailer I have seen for the DOW franchise, marines do nothing but pointlessly die (and be happy about it), orks seem to have better tactical awareness and in general the whole plot shows nothing other than the endless meaningless grind of death to fill the III with the bodies of the dead. To be fair, the Space Marines are habitually depicted as being somewhat fatalistic in the 40K and 30K lore, essentially being posthumans superior to the ordinary run of humanity in every way, with vastly extended lifespans and greatly expanded cognitive functions alongside their physical superiority, and yet doomed to live lives of endless, bloody warfare until their inevitable deaths in battle. The fiction is also littered with quotes such as ‘It is better to die for the Emperor than to live for yourself’ and ‘What is the terror of death? To die with your work incomplete. Yes, but it never was a pointless death without fighting back.
I understand the trailer wants to be an allegory, but it rubs me the wrong way.
Yes, I understand most do not like DOW 2 because massive battles look better, but DOW 2 (and Space marine) delivered the space marine experience better than any other game that includes them from gameplay and from narrative perspective.
DOW 3 may do that, but the trailer for me sets it off to a bad start, the screenshots shown not so much though.
I wouldn’t worry too much @psychoticstorm – on prior form, the Mahreens will soon enough resume their usual posterior kicking, bolter-toting service in the following trailers for the game. I find it telling that no recognizable, named Blood Raven characters (or any faction leader characters) are present in the trailer. These are disposable grunts being offed to show how bloody the war for the artifact McGuffin thingy is. Once figures like Gabriel Angelos turn up, I think things will change rather quickly. I shall reserve judgement on the game until it comes out, but from this first trailer I have to say it looks like this might be exciting and depending on my financial state at the time of release I might pick it up.
I didn’t think this would ever happen, I had better finish DoW before this comes out.

If (and it is a BIG if) my pc will run this then this is the biggest no-brainer decision for me since Metal Gear 5 was announced 😛

Did they loose the “heroscale” on the marines…they are quite slim 😉
That was some trailer, although I felt the bodies making up the “III” at the end, felt like a nod to the chaos gods on one of the death worlds…
Also, the way that the wraith knight moved, with a grace reserved for the elder was beholding to watch; beautiful.
Very pretty, if not a bit arty in spots – will wait for the game play to decide – hoping for a nice RTS
No chaos is a refreshing change
I think depending on how well this game sells (let’s be honest, unless SEGA pull another Colonial Marines, which I’d doubt as Relic are solid then it’s gonna sell bloody well!) I’m sure we’ll see a plethora of expansions, I’d expect Tau, Guard and Chaos to be at the forefront of any further content as well.
Dark Eldar would be an awesome surprise though >_>
