Check Out 40K’s Latest Incarnation

Are you guys excited about the latest edition of the 40K rules? Want to get your hands on it? Well now you can head over to Games Workshop and pre-order your copy. Let the excitement commence!
The art style of the cover is very different to the previous iterations of the 40K rulebook, this time going for the full depiction of all out war. It is also refreshing to see Games Workshop using a chapter other than their usual poster boys, the Ultramarines.
The Dark Angels definitely appear to be receiving a lot of love from Games Workshop here which can only be good news for my favourite chapter.
The book will be 452 pages of full colour, detailing all the rules and background you need to get to grips with the world of 40K, including rules for:
"dynamic close-combat, flyers, psychic devastation and interactive scenery."
As with the previous release of the latest edition of Warhammer Fantasy, Games Workshop are releasing some new accessories to go along with the new rules, from decorative templates to a pack of psychic power cards.
"This set contains 35 large-format cards and come stored in a plastic fan-opening case, which bears the Aquila. There are 7 cards for each Psychic Discipline, each of which is represented by distinct artwork. There is also an instruction leaflet that classifies which powers can be used by the main Psykers in the Warhammer 40,000 universe."
Hmm, from the video (see above) it's obvious that there have been some pretty substantial changes made to the rules. How these shall play out, only time shall tell. I just can't wait to read the fluff.

well now i’ve sold my catachans i’ll head over to wayland games to pre-order it 🙂 from WD though some things i’m not going to like but others i’m going to love (build an aegis wall around my objective and go to ground for 2+ cover save, i think i’ll take that 🙂 )

Looking forward to having a good read of this one, 450 odd pages of toilet reading will last me a while.
Best rumoured rule for me is rage now just being a +2 attacks on the charge without all the silly ‘run to nearest enemy’ stuff thats so easily exploitable.
I can finally use Death Company in a meaningful way. Couple with the extra force organization chart above 2000 points, I think I could be fielding 15 dreadnoughts in a single game. I havent actually got 15 dreadnoughts, but I really like the idea of it.

Even after the typical wholesaler discount of 20%, this is still more expensive than the MSRP of the last edition. Meanwhile, Infinity rules are free (no frills, no fluff, but complete rules). Meanwhile, Battlefront promoted their 3rd edition of Flames of War by giving a free mini rulebook to any player who could bring in their 2nd edition full-sized rulebook to a game store. Yes even with some independents already advertising it with their discount its still way out there expensive. I must give GW their due though. The fantasy book ,though expensive, was a pretty impressive publication and 8th edition has been a big hit at our club especially with vet players. If GW get 40k as right as they did 8th Edition Fantasy then I may well be looking at getting back into my first wargaming experience that was 40K. Playing 5th had got very predictable and too many cheesey lists copied from internet.
6th will bring new challenges and will be a breath of fresh air to a tired game, hopefully.

A few questions? How long did the 5th edition rules last? How long do you think the 6th edition rules will last till the 7th are announced? And how complex do you need your game to be if it takes 450 pages to explain them?
Just bought Warmachines Cryx starter set and a Veer Myn army. Both came with free quick starter rules…The vast majority of games systems now are available free as quick starter and the full rules books about half that of 40k 6th ed.
Maybe 40k is only for those with more money than sense? 🙂
The last edition was about 4 years, so the rulebook, if you bother to buy the big one, is about £10 a year. Its not 450 pages of rules, if its anything like the last few, and fantasy, its about 120-150 pages of rules, the rest is fluff for the setting and hobby advice. I’m all for giving GW a hard time, but compare like with like, buy a GW box game (when it comes out) and you get the rules in there too, and its no more expensive than the warmachine 2 player box either. Erm Nog? So far no word on a starter set for 6th edition and no word on how high the price will be pitched on that either. So no quick start rules till.. whenever. Also other games systems you buy the rules book and that basically is it. GW you buy the rule book and then its £15 each army book. If you run more than one army then…
But I think prices will follow GW’s lead sadly which makes this an increasingly expensive past time like every other hobby today. 🙁
I like how in Warmachine you don’t need anything but the core rulebook to play the game. If you don’t care about fluff, you don’t need any other books. All the models come with cards that have all the rules you need. Well, that and soon they will be releasing an app that will have all the cards, past, present, and future for $60!
Really you don’t need anything but the two starter boxes- since if that’s all you have the quick start rules cover everything in the box, but I don’t think that’s ever truly going to be the case with a main GW game, even 3rd ed that came with the lists for everyone in the back was a very cut down version of how the rules would turn out, most wargear and weapons slimmed down to a generic grouping before they finalised what everything did in the codex.
Not every game is over the top expensive. Get into Spartan Games lines and you’ll see it’s rather affordable on the models and books.
It’s a dilema. I recently got into Warmachine/ Hordes and it is easier and cheaper to make armies in those systems. What GW has going for it is tradition, People have played it for decades now and build their armies. I too love the back story and I do enjoy playing my Space marines, but I agree that they put out rule books too quickly to keep up and the army sizes are to large to keep up finacialy. They should work on encouraging the smaller quicker games.
I have two warhammer armies, and I was actually considering starting 40k with the advent of 6th edition 40k. From what I have gathered the new edition got a bit of a “fantasy” treatment ruleswise, which is fine by me as I quite like the 8th rule set. However, GW’s price rise last year already had me questioning if I would want to start any new army. sorry guys, but i’m gonna have to spit in the soup here. i can’t help it, i need to vent my frustrations! no way in hell i’m shelling out 90 bucks american (wich for me in canada means it’s at least 90 bucks) for a book of any kind. not to mention the gamer & collector’s editions wich aren’t that good a deal considering the “extras” can be purchased seperately for basicly the same price. plus, are they serious with the purse?? call it whatever you want, it’s a purse. and that, some dice and templates is supposed to make… Read more »
it’s not as if they force you to buy it and they sold out all the special editions in no time, so I guess at least some people are willing to pay the price
Exactly how many books have you ever paid for in full for, say, a single session of university? For a 450pages rulebook, full color which we might use for about the next 4-5 years, the 180$ CAD it cost me for my collector edition felt like a breeze.
Besides, you’re going to need it eitherway to play the game, or wait for the 100+ 2player boxset with the new mini-rulebook in some months.
And yes, it IS printed on dyed magical Pony skin. It’s a fad that only happens every millenium or so, which makes it pretty rare.

Like crovax20 I am liking the idea that WH40K has received the 8th edition treatment. Fortunately I do have a number of armies not used really since 3rd edition (I did buy 4 & 5th but found the rules too cheesy). I await this edition with renewed hope! I’m also keeping my fingers crossed that they have moved on the timeline with ‘significance’ I.e. enough to get the whole background the shake it desperately needs… Let’s hope…
I wonder this one will be as crappy quality wise as the fantasy rulebook.
I’m not a 40k fan but that is a very well presented product and although £45 is a lot its still cheaper per page than the kings of war rulebook, unless I’m having an epic maths fail that is.
Thing is; you don’t need to buy the book to get the rules for KoW.
a very good point lucas, I’m a massive kings of war fan and will be buying the book, because I want to support the company and I’m intrigued to see how they do the background. I was just surprised when I realised the price difference.

I would buy a paperback rulebook for a tenner but then I will still need to update all the army books
I just haven’t the resources and can’t be arsed. There are too many really interesting things going on to pool my limited funds into the vortex of the eternal dosh drain.

The thing is if you like the hobby you pay the cost of getting into the hobby, tabletop gaming is no real exception. I’m not saying this as an apologist for GW prices, Im really disappointed at their latest price hike. I play a lot of different games and have bought a lot of different rulebooks, they range in price from £20-£30′ but for the most part are mostly just rules. GW’s price hikes made me laugh and then they make me mock my friends. Poor little Marine players having to shell out 90 bucks for a Land Raider (and not even counting the superior variants that lurk in the pricey conversion kits and forgeworld models). Overall, GW: Models=Pricey as all hell, but if you like, you buy; Books=Default is worth it. Everything else isn’t.

I have been gaming for about 25 years and and have seen better rule sets than GW come and go and I expect the current competition to do the same.
You speak of a sad truth about good games going to the way side. All this talk about other games books being cheaper and such is true but out of context. Many of them have no choice but to keep it low on cost to attract gamers or risk going bust. GW on the other hand has a captive audience begging to get their hands on new stuff. Nah, ill respectfully pass – just moving further away from GW stuff over the past year or so, theres other stuff I just happen to like a lot more and is more affordable for someone like myself. That said I wish those that are into it all the best and I hope they enjoy it! 🙂

Well I ordered the Collector’s and Gamer’s edition less than 20minutes after they went up on the US site. And GW sent me an email today stating ‘items have shipped’!! If true, I should have the books by Wed or Thursday!!!! I’ve been playing since ’89 and feel that 3rd, 4th, and 5th were too streamlined and simplified (yes I wrote simplified!) and I look forward to some good old fluffy fun. You didn’t read the fine print. If you selected the “to my store” option (which I suspect you must have if you got a shipping confirmation already), the store will get it this week but is not allowed to give it to you until Saturday (30th), the day it goes on sale retail. For example, my SE book shipped yesterday and tracking says ETD of tomorrow (Thursday), but that’s to my LGW. If you selected “to my house”, then the book will be shipped on Friday.
