Forge World previewed this mighty Primarch over the weekend at a Horus Heresy event and now Mortarion is stepping out onto the battlefield to reap himself a rich tally of souls...

Quite the deadly looking foe but it doesn't change the fact that a scythe is still a terrible looking weapon when you're trying to use it in combat. Something about it just looks very strange indeed and although they've tried to show him in the act of reaping through foes he just looks very awkward.
It's a shame because the armour and detail across the rest of the model is so amazingly good. Alas I think this one might be for fans of Mortarion alone.
What do you think? Is it not as awkward as I first thought?
I think it would’ve looked better if he held it like a two handed weapon (by the actual weapon shaft) rather than by the protruding handles, it does look a bit like a farming tool.

Am I reading that right on the Forge World site? $93 U.S. for a man-sized 28mm figure ?! I can’t imagine anyone out there who would pay that.
Not defending GW/FW’s pricing, but primarchs are a good deal larger than your average space marine.
Yeah, what he said. These things are huge with chunky scenic bases.
For the same price I would still rather buy two starter armies for Deadzone and the rule book. That would leave me with enough change to buy my opponent and I a few beer. Not to mention the Deadzone rule book will likely still be relevant two years from now.
And I stand corrected. I now see that there ARE people out there who would buy this.
There are a lot of people who would buy this. Check the forgeworld top 10 sellers list and every month there’s at least 1 of the character series in there. Those models sell at those prices because they are beautiful, and people will gladly pay it.
Then by all means rush out and get one.

Super gutted about this…… Mort is my no.1 home boy and I was really excited to add FW’s own pre Heresy version to the scratch built daemon prince version I own based on the Horus Heresy art work (visit ‘coolminiornot’ and look up user ‘SamuelSam’ to see what I bought!). I just cannot get past that scythe pose though. Why not have it raised above his head or something like the HH artwork? Shame coz the rest of the model is really excellent. I really quite like this model and think the scythe is an awesome cc weapon, I dont mind the handles but can see a point with the way he is holding it, I mean from that position how is he supposed to attack……by twisting his torso maybe?, not sure there would be that much power in it, so probably would of been better if the model were grasping the shaft and in a slightly more dinamic pose.
Do like it but 50 quid’s a tad steep, kind of has to be perfect for that price.
I’m not overly fond of this one but I think it fits with the character well. Probably a good things as it makes me less likely to start a Death Guard army so will save me a pretty penny.
On the comments regarding prices they are expensive but they are worth it, gorgeous to paint and some things aren’t too bad. I collect Sons of Horus so Abaddon and Loken works out like buying two top end characters and to be honest they are much better than some of the more expensive character models lately.
I get what people are saying about the scythe. Using a scythe as a weapon is one of those things which sounds awesome when you write it in a novel, but the reality is it looks a bit silly. This is a beautifully sculpted model, but I think it’s my least favourite primarch so far.
The scythe was peasant weapon to be sure, but in function mimicked the bill hook used by medieval infantry. It was definitely up to the task of dragging a knight from his horse. Not sure what the equivalent would be in 40k.
No one buys these mini’s because the weapons look right or look like they could work in the real world. That’s not why we play 40k. As for the model its ok, still prefer Fulgrim although I’d say Logar is the least exciting Primarch. I would say the paint job is not the best.
Agreed (ish) dafthelmet85, but I like to feel the characters pose as if in real life, kind of strange I suppose but to me as I continue my modelling I try to inject that into them as much as I can and when I come up against something that contradicts this I take a step back, thats all.
As for the money, if I like something I’ll spend it no prob’s!, but eye’s wide open 50 quids too much, so it has to be spot on!
Ok so the model looks great and all, but where is the re-breather. If the sculptor loves Mortarion so much how does he miss the fact that he needed a re-breather. Heck it’s even in all the art work that he took inspiration from.
