Space Wolves & Deathwatch Strike Warhammer 40K This Weekend

Space Marines are going to be leading the way into the world of Warhammer 40,000 again this weekend. We flitted with the idea of Xenos but Games Workshop are back on the Primaris Pony with new Codex entries for the Space Wolves and Deathwatch.

Deathwatch Codex - Warhammer 40K

Both of these new Codexes come with plenty of information for you to make an army built around each of these iconic Space Marine Chapters. You'll find all of the tweaks in the rules that make them unique including additional units, formations, special abilities and wargear. All of this comes wrapped up in a fancy new hardback book for each Chapter.

Whilst I do like the idea of making a Deathwatch force, drawn from different Chapters, I think it would be awesome to go back to the Space Vikings and kick some ass in the name of Leman Russ.

New Space Marine Combat Patrol Sets

To help those who are expanding their Space Marine collection to include these new Chapters they have also produced a set of new Combat Patrol Sets. There are boxes for the Deathwatch and Space Wolves.

Each of the sets comes as a force designed to be playable right out of the box. It comes in at a level which should mean it's easy to just dive in and play with others once you've flicked through the Codex.

Both of these sets look like they focus in on the elite side of things and give you a hard-hitting bunch of models to get going with. With that in mind, you could easily mix this up with one of the Space Marine Start Collecting sets in order to make a bigger Primaris force.

If you're interested in either of these Chapters then it makes sense to maybe pick up the new Codex and one of these Combat Patrol sets. The Deathwatch are a pretty interesting set to paint up, as much as I like the Space Wolves, as you get to play around with black and silver but then add more character with their individual Chapter symbols.

New Space Marines & New-ish Orks!

As well as the new Codexes and Combat Patrols you'll also be able to pick up some individual kits from Games Workshop. The first of these matches up nicely with the new Space Wolves book as Ragnar Blackmane is now available separately.

As well as this charismatic leader for the Space Wolves we're also getting his deadly foe, the mighty Ghazghkull Thraka who is at the ready to lead a new Ork Waaaaagh! He is also available separately and can be used to lead your big ol' band of Ork Boyz into battle.

This mammoth version of Ghazghkull comes with his ever-faithful and oft sat on companion known as Makari.

I think you should just ditch the big guy and use Makari to be the banner bearer for your Grot/Gretchin army. I am still convinced that you could do a lot of fun stuff with a force made up of these little blighters and some insane machinery!

As an additional option for every Space Marine army you now have the Primaris Outriders set. This is pretty good for those making new and improved White Scars armies.

More battering ram with guns than bike; these do look like another fun addition to a Space Marine force. All you'd need to do here is add a few accessories from various Chapters into the mix and they'd work for anything. Toss a few shields and wings in and you've got something worthy of the Ravenwing for example.

A Classic Warhammer 40,000 Story

Finally, we also had the little announcement that Black Library are bringing back Bloodquest with a new colourised version.

Bloodquest Volume 1 - Black Library

Bloodquest Volume 1 // Black Library

This will follow the classic tale of Captain Leonatos as he seeks to track down the legendary Blade Encarmine. This is possibly one of the coolest stories ever written/drawn for Warhammer 40,000 and it turns into quite the epic once it reaches its conclusion. I know many, many people who built Blood Angels armies around Leonatos and his companions.

Deathwatch or Space Wolves; which would you pick?
