If things are going according to plan I will be available for hobby night!
In all likelihood painting either Romans or Samurai but I’ve also recently started a Viking Warband that needs some attention..
http://www.beastsofwar.com/groups/painting/forum/topic/the-ravenclaws-a-viking-warband-for-saga/
In any case I’m looking forward to it!
Happy Sunday folks!
@brennon – the Battle automata aren’t for the Mechanicum, they’re the Thousand Sons specific variants (so suggest you guys add some to the studio army funds permitting! 🙂 )
@warzan – the paint scheme for them is metallics followed by a red clear top e.g. Leadbelcher base, Ironbreaker highlight, Nuln oil shading finished a coat of FW Angron Red Clear airbrushed on top. I’ve personally done mine with Vallejo Metallic Air Black, Vallejo Mateallic Air Gunmetal, Nuln Oil shading and FW Angron Red Clear.
Looking forward to Thursday night! 🙂
Thanks for one of the most entertaining and funny XLBS weekenders for a while. I love it when you guys get the banter going. And kudos to Justin for being such a good sport about the ribbing.
Hope all goes well for hobby night live, I shall not be watching I’m afraid as I am off to one of those much too comicy marvel movies, Guardians of the Galaxy double, with volume two being shown just after midnight.
Dark Ops also do a Viking longship in 28mm, Just need to add sail and rigging.
They are absolutely lovely B) . I picked one up and so did one of my friends from club. They do fantastic looking ” Galleon ” model chaps, it would look great in a game of Wolsung or something more ‘ piratey ‘.
@ Warzan – Justin is right about the vacuum forming. With the typical process you hear the material in an oven to make it less rigid, then stretch it across a Moulding. The Moulding then has dozens of holes in it, similar to an air hockey table, which creates negative pressure to suck the material to perfectly fit the form as it cools.
As Justin said, when this happens different parts of the material can stretch more than others depending on the contours of the Moulding. Deep or pronounced details will stretch the material more, making the object thinner in those places. That’s what drives the thickness of the overall material. It needs to be thick enough so that it won’t break in the more pronounced areas of the Mould.
Also – on the “family friendly programming”. Got in a bit of trouble with the wife yesterday as I was listening to the weekender with the kids in the room and Warren dropped more than a couple “s”- bombs. Just want to know if this type of stuff will continue (it’s your show) just so I can screen my listening appropriately to non-children times.
Btw – “Moulding” should be “mould” above. I hate autocorrect.
When has Gamer Dad transformed into Horror Dad? How will those boys ever grow up without needing some serious psychotherapy?
Great show as usual guys!
With the cost of minis I’ve been thinking about this, and really I seem to have some sort of gut feeling as well as how much I want a particular miniature, that come into play. I assume the £70 character was Mr Russ, and £70 is loads for a single model, I will pay it when i get an army up and running as I love my Space Wolves and feel I “need” the mini for more than just an in game character. I’m emotionally invested and attached to the Wolves so that makes sense to me. I do love the other ForgeWorld character series models that they have, but I dont have that same feeling with them and will never probably buy any other.
Warren’s Vikings looked very very cool, really nice find there! All hail the true Ragnar 🙂 hehe Sorry Justin !
Really looking forward to the hobby night live! Going to be awesome!
Those are some nice looking Vikings you’ve got @Warzan , looking forward to seeing your warband when it’s fully painted 🙂
Happy sunday guys
@warsan really wish you guys would stop treating the Viking tv show as historical. It is anything but. Its not even know if Ragnar ever exited. The sagas are stories told from memory only written down after being told for ages. They are about as historical accurate as the bible 🙂
Even in the Saga of Ragnar there is nothing to suggest he had a brother named Rollo 🙂
Everyone fighting in England at that time pretty much used the same gear. Chainmail, axes, spears, swords, bows and shields.
By 1066 The normans used horses alot more than the Vikings, and had a different shaped shield, maybe because it was better to use mounted? But that was really the major difference 😉
the Bayeux tapestry is a great source to see the arms and armor of the time
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayeux_Tapestry
Regarding hobby time, the move scarce and most valuable item of any hobby these days at least for me is — “time” Between work, family and some community things I do, if I have an hour that is a lot. The only way that I have found more time is by stop participating in the various forums and BoW is pretty much my only site at the moment because I can watch the videos while I am making breakfast for my family.
I am a big D&D fan have some of the Wizkids mini’s. While many are cheap, they are a few that are $14 for a single piece with I believe is a lot. No, they are not the best but they are good enough to put down on the table and have used them as proxies for other games like Descent 2e.
@warzan — there is a Fallout 4 miniature game that will be launching I believe this year. It would be a shear tragedy if BoW does not have a video segment about this miniature game. I am would be shocked if there not a few members who are both Fallout video game fans and also miniature fans See the link –> http://www.modiphius.com/fallout.html
While watching XBLS one of my friends pinged me on FB to tell me about the Fallout game. The minis look really good and painting them will be an interesting palette mix of browns and pastels. Certainly one I’d love for BoW to have some coverage on!
Happy sunday guys!
Warren says that 32mm and 28mm ‘are the same thing’, and while I completely understand his point it is ironic that earlier in the episode he remarked at the fact that the Red Box Games miniatures are larger than the Hasslefree ones.
That’s because the Redbox Games figures are sculpted at 32mm ….. haha.
Perhaps I am in the minority, but I really wish the industry had a set of standards for sizes and that everyone would stick to them. IMHO, 32mm should be the standard.
This is the Marble tutorial that I have been using for my thousand sons.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0pGumGvczc
When I typed in “dirty thirties” in google my results showed the dust bowl in the 1930s in the USA.
I think I would rather have Ben’s google!
That’s what i got too. And a review for a chick flick / romcom. Must be @brennon having a dodgy browser history 😉 .
When you said 9 ships I swear I heard John cry out in sheer terror as he contemplated working on sail rigging for all of those Viking ships.
Happy to chat on Skype (or whatever) during hobby night. I’ll likely be working on my Thousand Sons ‘Scarab Occult Terminators’
There is almost no hobby time for this month, but i really hope to get some in may. My Stormtroopers need paint and there is still the Thundertusk sitting almost painted on the shelf.
@warzan you might like this a nice little guide from Warfames Factory.
“Mick’s guide features paint choices, hints and tips for constructing and finishing your Vikings, a tutorial for creating Viking casualties, conversion ideas, transfer ideas, and even a way to convert the Revell Viking longship with Wargames Factory figures! He has completely outdone himself this time!”

cant wait to see the BOW Viking fleet finished.
Happen Sunday great show
Good to see @warzan on the shows this weekend. It is great to mix it up as everyone on staff brings a slightly different look at things.
I can’t wait for Thursday as I will have lots to paint and plan to participate. If there is a need to practice let me know as work is light this week and available to test Skype etc.
That Viking ship has been around forever. I made one (bought from the Jorvik Viking centre gift shop) literally 30 years ago.
Fond memories and a great kit!
HA! Surprised to see my post on the show!
But Justin, I get what you’re saying, but as a whole, the Marvel cinematic Universe HAS to go fantastical. I mean, Thor, Guardians, the infinity war stuff. Thanos becomes a god for cripes sake! They’ve been, at least in part, escalating since the beginning. I’m a huge comic book nerd, and the cosmic marvel stuff is my jam.
Love the Ferrus model. I bought him at Salute last year when I discovered Hasslefree. I love what they do and often pick up a model or two from there ranges just for fun.
