Given how detailed this mini is Finecast could really improve its look. On the other hand it is Finecast.

I like the new paint job if nothing else
I never built the metal one but I have seen horror stories of how it was prone to warping and massive gaps and was damn near impossible to correct. Being in Finecast should sort that problem, as hot water is known to help with slight warpage issues, but the trade-off could be that it comes with a load of the known problems you can get with Finecast – good luck finding all the potential small bubbles on the barrel with the ‘damned soul skulls’ sculpted on it… I’ll wait for reviews before I think about starting that artillery based WoC… Read more »
I personally have no problem with Finecast. Any of the models that I have bought have been perfectly fine, and I can only see this being a good thing for the Hellcannon kit. Always a great model and it certainly needed a new version.
…doesn’t excuse them of hardly doing any of the essentials for other armies though. But that’s a different matter.

I can almost feel the souls in the cannon its so detailed.
Forget my horrid sarcasm for a moment. If any model needed to be in finecast this would be it. The reasons should be clear. The thing will be much lighter and just moving this will not cause it fall apart like many I have seen, dropping it will be more salvageable and for conversions. Conversions alone this puppy looked so good but was a nightmare as it was bloody hard to cut threw some parts. Now being finecast, should make conversion work a walk in the park.
Anything that makes getting your models onto the tabletop is a boon in my books. As I mentioned above I think finecast has got a pretty bad rap after its bad start. It’s fine, works, is manageable – just happens to cost the earth which is obviously annoying. But as for the Hellcannon I totally agree. It will be a lot easier to put together now and will have a lot more detail too it. Plus it comes with Chaos Dwarfs and that’s always a plus. I think GW should have released the BIG STUFF in Finecast, in 2011/early 2012 first. Giving them time to perfect the process, and also giving them ample time to Quality Control everything. After a few years, their entire range could have then been brought up to Finecast spec, assuming they actually managed to perfect the process. This seems far more sensible to me. I don’t think people mind metal Incubi etc… It’s the big monsters and large sculpts that really need to be made in magic finecast resin, and they should have been priority. Whenever I see the word Finecast I always click on the article hoping to read it’s getting better because I know sometime soon I’m going to have to take the plunge as they are going to produce a model I want.
It looks very good in picture but I wonder what kind of cast quality it has.

Damn, I had swore off finecast and they pull me back in with my love of Choas Dwarfs. Oh well, here’s to rolling those finecast dice! Hope I don’t crap out.

I still dont understand the debate about Finecast … the level of detail that they acheive with their Plastic kits is SO good that making further research on Finecast is irrelevant. From a person with normal eyesight the crispness of plastic details is as good as metal. If Finecast is more detailed then Metal I personally do not see the difference on finished painted models. I get that some people always want more, but at this scale more detail is overkill, you dont look at painting with a microscope unless you want to date the paintjob are analyse the strokes… Read more »
The reason why Games Workshop doesn’t use all plastic (and they have been making some amazing plastics lately) is that there are some very serious limits to how much detail a plastic model will hold. It all has to do with the process of how it is made. So, to make some of the more dynamic poses, they went with metals and now Finecast. GW’s plastics are best in the industry, but their Finecast is some of the worst resin type material out there. I get your meaning, and i’ve seen it Written that plastic IS limited in the amount of detail it can hold, but looking at the mortis engine, the wight king, the Nurgle chaos lord, the dark elf sorceress … I’ve seen it Written but I dont See any limit to what the plastic can hold …
I’m not saying the current hellcanon could be made of plastic the way it is. but I’m Positive that if they designed a new one for a plastic sprue it WOULD be better then this one (or at least AS good and cheaper).
The final product of Finecast, when it’s in perfect “as should be sold to the consumer” condition, is amazing, superior to most and possibly all resin-types out there. But you’ve made the key point, Finecast may be amazing when it works but … clearly it’s so prone to messing up and failing that one must ask: was this the best material (concoction) to use? First off GW are a MODELS company first, a games company second, so detail is important (that might be a marketing mistake, it might not be). Secondly, Finecast, like metal, allows you to create shapes etc that you cannot achieve with plastic, and the lack of detail in plastic (compared to metal or proper resin, or finecast) is significant: GW do achieve an amazing standard with their CGI plastics (because they can afford to), but they are far away from their better metal/resin sculpts.
