Check Out New Warlock Showdown In New Warmachine Boxed Set
February 17, 2025 by brennon
A new boxed set is available for you to pre-order from Steamforged Games. Warlocks clash in a new Warmachine boxed set which features the forces of Khymaera battling against the Southern Kriels. What do you make of Shadows & Scum?
Shadows & Scum // Warmachine
Shadows & Scum comes with two thirty-point Command Cadres made up of hard plastic miniatures. They are an ideal option for those wanting to start in Warmachine but with Warlocks rather than Warcasters. On the one side are the Khymaera Shard Nocturnes whilst on the other you have the Southern Kriels Foulbloods.
Foulblood's Armada // Warmachine
Foulblood's Armada is here to cause chaos. Soaked in rum and smelling of blackpowder, they are dapper, murderous and ready for a scrap. This crew is led by Commodore Foulblood alongside the Lochabash Brothers and their Dire Troll, Chum. You can also get Mr Bogs and Sully to help complete the crew and begin your raids.
On the other side of things, you've got the Shard Nocturnes who will be sneaking around in the shadows.
Shard Nocturnes // Warmachine
The set is led by Vallyx, Fate’s Eclipse the Warlock who comes backed up by Aklyss, the Warbeast. The additional characters making up this thirty-point set include two solos in the form of Pythia and Regulus. Backing them all up, you have three Shades who will be doing Vallyx's dirty work.
Shadows & Scum - Miniatures // Warmachine
Snap up both of these new warbands and see where it goes. You could split the cost of this set with a friend and take one side each. You could also say "sod that" and take both factions for yourself and get painting.
Vengeance On Wings
As well as the new Shadows & Scum set, there is also another miniature in the form of Lylyth, the Raven Vengeance.
Lylyth, the Raven Vengeance // Warmachine
She is a formidable Warlock in her own right and one that could be a great option for those who want to take that next step after picking up Shadows & Scum. She has brutal ranged attacks that can bring down her foes from a distance plus her Warping Wings ability means that she can shield her comrades who are nearby.
Get with the sneaky, shooting, assassin-based vibe of the Khymaera Shadowflame Shard with another impressive new miniature. Steamforged Games are knocking it out of the park with their new miniatures for the universe of Warmachine.
What do you make of these new options from Steamforged Games?

I like Hordes, but neither of those factions appeals to me. If Circle were involved I might be interested.
Agreed. I’ve never understood the jowly, goiter-enhanced, blue-orcs-except-we-call-them-“Trollblood” faction. And the Shard image looks like they did a digital coloring book of a group of renders, so everything looks like a 2d cartoon.
I like these Trollbllods, the y have character and look somewhat diifferent. The Shard on the other hadn look all very samey at least in the shown picture.
I cannot stand the direction they took the trolls. The original minis were awesome, with their highlander aesthetic. There were silly minis but it didn’t dominate the faction. I’ll echo the “not-orks” direction as they are simply the silly analog to 40k orks now. What a bummer.
I think that designing miniatures for Riot Quest really changed PP’s approach. So now most new releases seem like they could belong in Riot Quest. They’re all a little more over the top and all a little sillier. On the Trollbloods themselves, I rather like this direction. I’ve got tons of the good old Scottish Trollbloods and I see these as a separate group of seafaring Trollbloods. I don’t see them as going quite orky, but I think I see where you’re coming from. The factions in the new version are all specific sub-factions, aren’t they? I know you can… Read more »
@odinsgrandson I think you hit the nail on the head there. They do seem to be following the Riot Quest aesthetic. I also think the models are all nice, but very busy and over-the-top in their design. Just not my cup of tea. I would have preferred they just modernized the existing range – maybe reduce the sizes of the shoulder-pads of certain models…etc. I have a Skorne army, and I still do play the 50pt skirmish battle on occasion with the 3rd edition ruleset and the last iteration of the online cards. It is fun. So I don’t think… Read more »
While neither faction does anything for me, its good to see more plastic starters. Though unless Steamforged bothers to put together a proper starter guide none of this will attract much in the way of new players. As much as the app makes sense to keep rules updated and is pretty functional for those in the game as a starting point its suboptimal. Even just a rules and icon reference document would go a long way. Sigh.
I felt like Privateer Press really lost it when they stopped including cards with the minis and stopped printing rules in the faction books (that second choice is one I don’t even begin to understand).
Like, I can see why they wanted to make it easy to adjust the game balance every year with updates, but plenty of us just want to play casually.
Cards are a sure nice thing to have but longer term hard to maintain with updates. I get that. The faction books were some of the best games literature ever in print. I treasure the small collection I have just to occasionally browse through. Not to have a single rules document alongside the app is an issue. Not to have a starter set of rules as a pdf I just don’t get. I’ve tried getting back into Warmachine and as much as I get the logic of having an app it’s not the way to introduce new players. And in… Read more »
I disagee with you here, althou I am pint person , introducing new gamers with app is the way, i play with younger generation an they all love it an i am the one slowing the game. im over 40 and my opponents reach 30 . I would like to have card in froint of me but hey, live and learn. and rules are actually quicker to find on app too.
I got interested in the game recently (for the first time ever.) and it was like slamming into a brick wall mentally. I printed the rulebook out and used it to organise some very criminally inexpensive ebay purchases. I got there, but it would have been preferable to have guidance. …and beautiful though some of the old minis are, there”s a bewildering array of them. I can see the need to reconsolidate. (and the horrors, for expensive collections.)
I actually found the app useful for searching terms, etc. I would like to have enlarged card printouts for characters though…
The nocturnes are looking good for the game tables
I’ve only recently entertained ANY interest in Warmachine, so these sculpts look fairly fresh to me. I quite like them.
I really like some of the older factions though. Skorne, menoth and the “Scottish” trolls. I think many of these are at least playable evn if they aren’t “active” factions. This must really rankle oldheads??
Oh god these are amazing, I cant get into ANOTHER game system can I? Or can I?
