Bolt Action Unboxing: Sherman V
October 25, 2016 by dignity
Today we're Unboxing Bolt Action's Sherman V from Warlord Games.
This was perhaps the most populous British tank. The only downside was a high silhouette, but the Sherman made up for this with its reliability, ruggedness and numbers.
Armed with a 75mm gun and two .30 cal Machine Guns, the Sherman V could handle itself just fine!
Which Sherman do you prefer?

Tiger I any day of the week, it just looks cooler!!! And Porsche belonging to the VW Company the Tiger I probably is even better for the environment 😉
Isn’t that an A3 you are comparing it to with the welded hull. The A1 had The curved cast hull.
Pretty sure the Italeri one is actually an M4 (no A designation at all) the bridge/horseshoe shape on the upper rear of the hull it Inherited from the M3 medium would be a squashed T shape on the A2/3/4 etc, and as you said the A1 would have a cast hull with or without the bridge shaped rear I think depending on how late in the run it was built.
Original Shermans had cast hulls, the initial production until late 42 was mostly cast, but hull design changed to welded for pace and ease of production, the A or “mod” number has nothing really to do with the hull shape. It’s all about the power plant:
M4: Continental 9 Cylinder Radial
A1: Continental 12 Cylinder Radial
A2: Twined Detroit Diesel
A3: Ford GAA V8
A4: Chrysler 30 Cylinder Multibank
You find many of the “A” numbers more closely correspond to the manufacturers preference and “mod” of the typical Sherman layout (a 30 ton medium tank with top mounted 75mm gun in a traversing turret that must have a crew of 5 with top speed of at least 28mph)
You can go more granular, into turret design which had (if memory serves me) about 4 or 5 different shapes throughout production.
To easily point out a Shermans Mod number you can spot certain hull changes from each manufacturer.
you M4 and A1 look very similar, and have the “typical Sherman look” A2 also is very similar, so you gotta look at the back hull plate. Radial engine tanks have two canisters on either side of the back plate which are air filters. The A2 with the Diesel doesn’t have those. A3’s don’t have a protruding “bustle” for the driver/co-driver hatches and have a distinctive steep slope on their front armour. A4’s have wider spacing between suspension units (about 8-12 inches longer in the hull) And have a “bubble” protruding from the upper engine deck to accommodate the top of the radiator for the V8 engine.
Seems I ran off again haha! 🙂 Hope it was at least a little informative. (believe me, the book on this subject are vast and stupidly complicated!)
As it stands we have both seen on the battlefields. The Henschel turret wasn’t ready as production started and so they took the Porsche design. But I would take the Henschel Tiger because the Porsche design was way too much ahead of it’s time and therefor nothing for development during a war where you need the tech better yesterday than next month or year.
Even the Henschel design was overengineered… as history told us.
And for the Sherman… well it’s a Sherman. They look all the same 😉
“And for the Sherman… well it’s a Sherman. They look all the same ”
I just died a little inside 😛
On the topic of turrets! The Porsche turret for Tiger 1 was dismissed as it wasn’t tall enough to allow the gun to fully depress (hense the raised middle channel you find on them) What was carried into production (on the first 50 Tigers at least) was the gun mantlet. As seen on Bovington’s example there is a notch cut out at the bottom of the mantlet to have allowed it to traverse over the engine cooling grills which stood proud of the Porsche turrets engine deck.
Sorry but I’m more with the german and british (except the Churchil) tanks. I think one problem with Shermans is the problem to recognize the right version. Every Sherman looks the same… well at least at first glance…
The Henschel Tiger was frist developed around the conical 75mm “0725” gun. With this gun the turret would have been smaller and lighter. But Hitler forbad to build this gun in 1941 because the rounds it needed to achieve the same penetration value as the 88mm/L56 gun needed tungsten. Tungsten was very short so Henschel had to take the 88mm with the Porsche turret (slightly changed) because it was no time to develope a completely new turret.
That was the point I was aiming at.
Gotcha 😀
If I didn’t have an embarrassment of resin Sherman Vs still waiting for some paint, I’d love a few of these.
HA!
I’d wait for them to convert the Tiger P into the Ferdinand.
I’ll bring my own machine guns for it to be an Elephant.
#TimeForTanks … make it trend 😉
the panzer IV the Ferdinand & tiger P will probably have broke down after the first hour.
i actually prefer the look of the tiger p a little bit but if i had to choose one to fight in the i’d have to go with the Tiger I
tiger 1
Quite a difference in the look between the game piece Sherman V and the model Sherman M4 . Little details that are missing like most of the tools bother me , but they molded the lift rings separate , . Hmm , guess I’ll have to get at least one , or a troop . The prototype Tiger P actually had side escape hatches for the driver / co-driver but for some reason they got welded up on the remaining 4 that were built and then had the tow cables stowed over them, like on the Elephant . The Tiger P turret ended up , after a few revisions as the turret used on the production Tiger I . Both Tiger I & P are cool looking tanks but I’ld probably take a Panzer IV , much more reliable and mobile . Plus with the turret and side schurtzen mounted , at a distance you look like a Tiger , all the better to scare the Yanks .
While the stowage boxes and spare track are fantastic , the spare wheels are pieces of [email protected] to put it mildly . Better order the Rubicon Allies stowage set to get some decent wheels and extra track to help protect your crew from those German 88s
A Tiger P that had the bugs worked out would be great to have. And looks that little bit cooler so perfect for Weird World War stuff.
Great video guys thanks for all the great work that you do. Can Jon get a show where he just allowed to go on different topics for like 20 minutes?
I approve this comment!
Just let him get philosophical about tanks… for as long as he needs per show… every show 😀
We got a name for the show : “Time for Tanks !”
Only Tanky goodness in one half hour …
T(h)ank God for @Johnlyons ?
Of course the question would be : how many episodes will be filled with Shermans ?
I`m with @John, and i`ll be looking at getting a few Sherman V at a later date.
But first of all, i have a little conversion job to do with a “Pershing” for K47.
Tiger 1, always the Tiger 1.
With my ability at rolling real bad dice rolls I can assure you that my mates Sherman’s far out perform my Panthers at any range
