All Praise the Shrine of the Aquilla
August 17, 2010 by johnlyons
The shrine of the aquilla is a cool ruin made by games workshop for warhammer 40k. This is a three level ruin which could be used for lots of other game systems AT-43 etc.
Built in the gothic style you could even use this in fantasy or ancient wargaming. A very useful piece of kit.

Personally, I dont like how the entrance is at a corner, I would place it in the center of the building, with the last little wall (to the left on the picture) as the corner.
It’s a good kit, and when I was in the GW store the last time, I was really tempted to buy it, but I was quite happy that I had 5€ too less in my wallet.
I like the kind of the building, but what I don’t like on all the GW building is, taht you actually don’t have 4 sides. I mean, you get two walls, not 4 you would normaly need. I can’t remember a gun that makes such a heavy damage, that two sides are completly gone, but the otehr two walls are still looking damn fine.

What dkadukowski said: Bombs. 😛 Just look up some WWII aftermath pics in Britain and other European countries. Even though the Luftwaffe was laying down thousands of bombs, halves and quarters of buildings were left intact, apart from some scorching and such.

BOMBS…
Well, okay, I admit. I think I was a bit rash for that, sorry. I found a good picture that showed Hamburg, totaly bombed out in WW2, but the buildings look quite “complete”.

a bit of las cannon fire perhaps?
Regulator got a point but so does dkadukowski… the building could have suffered from a load of different attacks wich reduced two of the walls to nothin but rubble but then… why would two of the walls still be that intact? i think its pretty cheap of GW to only put enough wall to make two fair sized walls. i bough one of the Citys of death ruins and i think they should include one more wall sprue. so that you if you fanzy it could make a whole building. anyways i really like their ruins, but the shrine of… Read more »

No, but i remember i time were all you had to make scenery with were plaster cake pillars and margarine tubs.:-)
On a separate note john i think acetate overhead projector sheets and their specific pens would be perfect for the stained glass windows.(watch those pens though they have got xylene in them) ;-P
Me too mate, my first ‘scenery’ was cardboard boxes and lots of imagination 😀
Another way to do stain glass is use a plasticard backing, paint your design on the plasticard, then go over the paint with some water effects. The window will not be transparent obviously, but I find it easier to work with than glass paints.
Honestly im a little bit meh. with the kit it looks nice when someone comes along after combining a few of this kits to make a fully intact one its definitely one of the top ways to put this all together the stain glass idea is also nice but in alot of cases its hard to pull off without making it look tacky and finally for me i have to agree its far to plain to be a shrine it would need abit of work from the modeler to bring it up to scratch nothing to taxing i admit but… Read more »
