Adam Uses the Force to Make it So

Over at Tabletop Minions Adam has managed to hit 3000 subscribers and what has he decided to do on this momentous occasion? Why give us all a quick idea of his impressions of Star Trek Attack Wing compared with Star Wars X-Wing.
Star Trek Attack Wing utilizes the X-Wing rule system to help us recreate the epic space battles of the classic TV show. It will be interesting to see how two such similar games compare, especially when we take into account the differences between them.

I’m a big fan of both. Aesthetically I love Xwing, but I prefer the customisation of Attack Wing.
The only thing I dont like is that loving both systems hurts my bank balance.
I prefer Star Trek Attack Wing. The way you can create crew/upgrade combo’s on the ship work’s really well. X-wing feels a bit too simple and samey once you play it more than a dozen times. The changes wizkids have made have realy worked. The models however are much better for X-wing. While I understand doing the ships to true scale with each other was never an option for attack wing, having small ships one size, large ones another etc would have worked much better than the random nature they currently are. It will be very interesting to see how the large ships impact X-Wing.

It looks like there’s going to be a third game using this system. WizKids is going to make an Attack Wing: D&D with flying dragons and ground units like giants and siege weaponry.
We’ll see how it compares later this year supposedly.
I play both X Wing and Attack Wing. Both are great games. X Wing has the better paint jobs compared to Attack Wing. I do prefer the customisation of Attack Wing, working out the best captain, crew and upgrades for a winning combo. I love that each expansion ship pack has a new scenario to try out, themed around the ship in the pack.
The paint jobs on Attack Wing ships isn’t great, but I have seen pics of ships that people have repainted themselves, with some good results.
I’m inclined to agree with Adam on most of his points. Doesn’t hurt that I love Star Wars just a tad more than Star Trek.

Frankly, I was turned off both systems by the pre-painted ships.
I don’t care how good or bad the factory paintjobs are, I like modelling and painting and want to do it myself, thankyouverymuch.
I agree pretty much across the board. The paint jobs for x-wing are much better. The cards for attack wing are better. Scale is the killer of attack wing for me as well.
I play & enjoy both and really the primary deciding factor if you had to choose is which setting do you prefer? I do agree that scale is a problem in Attack Wing but not for the reason that Adam describes. For a fleet scale game like Attack Wing I don’t need the big capital ships in exact scale to each other. Rather the problem with scale in AW is that it’s inconsistent – some ships are the appropriate size in relation to each other and some are not. Also the scale of the turns is a lot bigger, so even if you use the same template, in reality the turn would be much wider when you compare it to the fighters in X-wing.
And of course that’s kinda atmospheric thinking, technically in the vacuum of space there is no such thing as aerodynamics 😛 Big ships might even be more maneuverable as there’s more real estate to stick thrusters on ><
I sooooo need to find somewhere in my area that I can play this game, just itching to buy me some X-Wings, anyone in North Yorkshire who plays this………or any other a Wargame for that matter……….so lonely up here 🙁
Having played both games pretty often I have to say I also prefer Attack Wing. Not only are there more options, I generally feel like the choices you make matter a lot more in Attack Wing than they do in X-Wing… In Attack Wing I always find myself having to make tough decisions about what to choose for my points because most of the upgrades are useful, in X-Wing it never made much difference. More of a “aaah I wish I could take them all!” versus “meh let’s just take this and see if we ever get to use it”.… Read more »
I think the inconsistency in the AW scale stems from the fact that Wizkids appear to have re-used some of the models they had for their Star Trek Heroclix Tactics game rather than design new ships.
I also think that the scenarios in AW add a lot more fun for casual play. It’s something that x-wing could benefit from.
As a life long star trek fan i have to say that… x-wing is the better game, i have played both games and yes their are differences between the two, mainly to accommodate the larger ships and different style of combat of the star trek universe. What lets AW down is the build quality of the game, The scale of the mini`s, the paint jobs, errors on the mini`s themselves(the bridge of the Klingon D7/Ktinga facing the wrong way, the mini of the uss excelsior witch is`nt, witch may seam petty but could you imagine GW releasing a space marine… Read more »
A few more reasons why I prefer X-wing is that I can play it casual with my girlfriend, play massive battles with friends and the biggest reason: Playing it competively. Be it in store championships or regional tournaments with the possibility I could win my countries championsship and getting a free ticket to US for X-Wing worlds championships. I haven’t really looked into competitive play from whizzkids so maybe they have something going as well, but the way fantasy flight games promotes their game with competitive play and cool prizes to boot is a big win for me.
